Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

The Jack Trengove is BACK Thread

Had Kent in our best 22 at the start of the season. Surely he's got to be close to selection. Same with JKH.

Agree with Jaded though - given that three of our inside mids are injured (Jones, Viney and Tyson), why give Trengove an extra year if he's not in the mix to be called up now?

This could be the stuff of Hollywood though: against all odds, Trengove eventually gets the nod and grasps his opportunity such that he once again becomes a required player.

The way Roos and now Goody coach is they bring a player in and give him a role. So for Jack to come in what role would they want him to play? Of late he has been playing half back at Casey and to quote Plapp, "Learning a new role". I don't think we need another half back (quarterback) at the moment. If Hogan returns I expect we will play one less mid anyway.

On this basis I would be pleasantly surprised if Jack is selected

Defensive Forward on Kade Simpson. Neither are quick and Jack is excellent overhead.

I never take much notice of Casey reports and less so when Trengove is involved.

Some posters can't reference Trengove without talking about his pace.  It's just inbuilt.  "I'lll mention how Trengove is going, but I  must highlight his lack of pace".  I no longer take any notice.

We all know he's not fleet of foot and he'll probably get delisted at year's end, but if he's good enough he's quick enough.  If he's not good enough he's gone.

That's not really fair. I like to hear every detail about:

How laconic Jack Watts is

The look on Garland's face

Trengove's lack of pace

And all similar important details when assessing the game.

What attribute do you think has kept him out of the seniors to date?  IMO if he was quick enough he'd have played every game because he has every other skill.

I'm interested in your take.

My take is that his career was over when Lewis was recruited.

He's competing with Tyson and Lewis for that inside to semi inside role.

I don't think he's a half-forward, or half-back.  I see him purely as a mid.  And when you're not quick roles become limited.

I see him as being capable in a Tyson type role at AFL level, but seemingly the FD don't, or have him behind in the pecking order.

For me, the club is wasting its time playing him across half-back at Casey.  Clearly they don't agree.

Can someone tell me what skill or attribute he needs to improve to make the seniors.

We saw in his first year he was super talented.  He hasn't lost that talent.  He's clean with the ball, he knows how to find it, he is a good decision maker, he's a great leader, he's a good kick and a good mark and he tackles well and understands the game.

Why isn't he getting a game?

What I don't understand is how he has ended up in this situation. It's not like he has a personality problem (to my understanding).

Surely he is well ahead of several others on the list. They didn't even allow him to prove himself in the NAB Challenge.

Sure he's not the "quickest" but he doesn't get pinged for holding the ball any more than the next person. His kick also has enough penetration, and he wins enough contested possession as well as sticks plenty of tackles (more than the average player).

Unfortunately, his days at the MFC look numbered.

Initially I thought Maynard but a bit of a risk in a big game. I'm with the earlier poster who questioned why contract Trengove if he's never going to play? His form at VFL level is solid, if not spectacular. Has been named among the best several times and was named as first emergency last week (albeit somewhat by default). Whilst I'd like to see if Jack still had something there is obviously trepidation in this selection. We know he'll bring leadership, experience and decent foot skills. It's the other areas that are of concern. Given the injury crisis, I think it's time to roll the dice! You know he will be desperate and give all. If emotion counts for anything surely the simultaneous returns of Trengove and Hogan (presumably) will be a spur for the team and supporters alike.

I reckon there are perhaps three reasons why Jack was retained for 2017:  They are, in no particular order:

  1. in recognition of his great 'team first' attitude, his outstanding work ethic and overall contribution to the Club.  Yes, it's sentimental logic, but it was the decent thing for the Club to do in the circumstances, and I think the present administration want us to be seen as a 'decent' club to be a part of.  Personally, I would have been disappointed if we had shunted Jack off the list at the end of 2016.
  2. the FD deemed that there were no late draft picks who were likely to add more to our list than Jack, and he obviously had no trade value; and
  3. on the slim basis that another pre season would see him recover some of the football attributes that made him so good in his first couple of years.

Sadly, football at the top level seems to have passed him by, but I reckon he might just get an opportunity this weekend, given that the 'football gods' have dealt us such a harsh hand.

A blend of the above, but number one had to be how he would go after a full pre season, on top of a year to fully recover from a terrible injury.

Would love to see him make it, but if you are a bit slow, you need vision and great skills (Sam Mitchell like!).

Maybe they don't think he's good enough "inside".  It's the only conclusion left.

Drafted as a mid, now not quick, yet playing behind the ball at Casey.  Even if he was behind others if you thought his best position was as a clearance mid you'd play him there (at Casey).

With Oliver and Viney as our best clearance players followed by Tyson, etc. they obviously don't see a spot.

This then gets back to your first question to me when I said if he's good enough he's quick enough.  They don't think he's good enough to be in our best 22 as a stoppage/inside mid and clearly he's not quick enough in other more outside/link roles.

I would have liked to see him play all year in the role Maynard, Stretch and now Kennedy-Harris is playing at Casey.

It's telling he isn't.  And if he isn't I don't see much point selecting him against Carlton.

If Trenners and Hogan make their comebacks on Sunday - it will lift the team enough to get a win.

**And I might have something in my eye when JT gets his first touch

He is good enough, just do it. none of this extended bench BS either - in the 18.

I think we may have given JT an extra year contract for insurance reasons.

Medical Insurance can be a very heavy pay out

If he couldn't make last weeks side behind 4 fringe players who had a drink ? he isn't going to get a game now.

By my reckoning Trengove is the only player on our list with senior experience, excluding those on the LTI, who hasn't played a game this season.

We knew what we were going to get from him this season, so there is nothing about his form or attitude that could be an issue.

Aside from the insurance issue raised by SWYL above, why retain him? It's almost getting disrespectful to have Jack wasting away at Casey whilst guys like White play games ahead of him.

I hope he gets a chance this week and then for several weeks beyond that, because he deserves a solid block of games to find his feet again.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
