Who are some names that went undrafted tonight who may get picked by us in the rookie draft?

James Parsons, Will Snelling come to mind.

We have 2 picks, with one promised to Michie, if he is there.

I hope we don't use our first pick on Michie

Best available. Does vanders have a twin hiding in NEAFL somewhere?

Question: Would there be a benefit in paying out M. Jones and Terlich's contracts at this late stage and promoting King and White? We could offer to recruit them both into Casey (where realistically is where they will both spend all their time next year, whereas White may be a chance in getting a run and is better depth). If we did this it may allow us to look at anybody of interest in the PSD or selecting three rookies. At the very least, it would significantly strengthen Casey and provide MFC more depth (c.f. retaining M.Jones and Terlich when we have different needs to when they were drafted)!

Reckon we need some outside run off half back with good kicking skills. Someone who can play tall & small. Pretty much another Mitch White.

So for me the two best options are:

Jack Watson (Swan Districts) - 191cm, 81kg or

James Parsons (Eastern Rangers) - 189cm, 85kg

Other peoples thoughts and suggestions of who we may look at?

O'Kearny, i was surprised that we didnt pull the trigger on him with one of our later picks, hopefully he could come through the middle, massive accumulator and worth the punt.

Possibly Callum Moore too, athletic talent, a couple years to develop on the rookie list could be alright.

O'Kearney just has no AFL traits. I can't see us being interested. He's without a position in modern AFL.

I'd go wing/half back for sure. Parsons' looks a nice type for a needs based selection.

Greg Clark could be an option. I like him as a tall outside runner. If he does have top line endurance then running up and down the wing at that size would make a nice bail out kick even if he doesn't have particularly great pace or skills.

Reuben William, Thomas Glen, Sam Murray seem likely types.

Some combination of athleticism and skills seems right, just a matter of finding someone who has as much as both.

Think we still need a mature ruck back-up.

If both Gawn and Spencer go down then I think we just make do with a combination of King's and Frost/Pedersen.

If we were confident in a mature ruck who would be good enough to be a long term back up I don't think we would've taken Mitch King. Judging from clubs trading the likes of Giles and Curry and North keeping Daw I think the state leagues are pretty bare this year. Heck teams were apparently in to Jamar.

Hulett and King strike me as your typical rookie list player because they need a few years of development. That seems to suggest that the club didn't rate the mids on offer at those picks. I'd say we may go for someone outside the TAC Cup.

And if ever you don't worry about 'needs' it is at the Rookie Draft.

You try and get whatever speculative talent you can and hope they take to it like Vanders.

I agree 55. Someone who can play next year if required. I think only two 'available' Ruckmen is leaving a lot to chance. The beauty of doing this through the Rookie draft is you only have to keep them one year. If better options open up you are not so locked in. If they show they are good enough then great. You can't really do that with an 18 yr old who you know will take time. Also don't think many of the DFA ruckmen would have been thrilled by a one year contract and they were probably seen as NQR to offer an extended timeframe and clog the list. I don't see developing talls as clogging the list. You have to invest in them sometime and you need a few through the journey. List clogging with someone who has developed and shown to be deficient is far worse in my eyes. If the Rookie list is used in this way I think it would be a very shrewd move by the club.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
