2015 Player Review - # 36 Jeff Garlett

Demonland

Recommended Posts

"Garlett provided plenty of excitement up forward and proved to be a fine recruit from Carlton, kicking at least one goal in every match this season, finishing with 40 goals. He has now kicked 39 goals or more four times in an AFL season. Garlett's best effort in a match this season was four goals in Melbournes stunning win over Geelong at Simonds Stadium in round 13."

Based on the place where Jeff Garlett was at this time last year, it must have required a relaxation of the no d***heads policy to get him into the club.

That being the case, why isn't Harley Bennell being given more consideration? He's a gun and would improve our playing list immeasurably.

How dangerous would we be with Jeff and Harley roaming around the vicinity of Jesse Hogan?

Be handy if Kent could kick the same amount as Jeff, if those could kick 70 between them Hogan bags 60 next year we will suprise a few sides

This guy is my favourite player right now.

I love Jones for different reasons, but Jeffy brings the type of skill and swagger that when you see it on the field, you realise how little we have had of it in recent times.

The downside is 31 behinds. Only 7 other players in the league kicked more and so many of them were almost dead in front. He could've easily turned 40 into a 50+ goal season which would've placed him in the All Australian bracket of small forwards this year.

It's an understatement to say he was a steal. Mick may as well have been giving a wristy under the table when the paperwork was being signed.

I'm loving what he brought this year both offensively and defensively, and he's capable of being even better in 2016.

Should have kicked more than 50 goals this year given some of his woeful misses, which would have almost put him in the All Australian picture. He certainly brings an element to our forward line that we have missed since Aaron Davey's first couple of years. Now we just have to find a way to eliminate those odd games where he just goes missing (eg North).

He also handed Hogan a few goals, Jeff was really unselfish in the red & blue.. He had a terrific first year at Melbourne.

Jeffy has slotted in rather well. Better than I had dared think.

In a more settled and able team he will shine even brighter I suspect. 50 isnt too far a reach for him id say and thats the sort of incremental advance that suddenly sees you winning some games as opposed to 'honourable' losses.

A genuine excitement on the field

thanks Cartlon !!

Great recruit for what we paid for him

But I watched him closely this year and some games he just wasn't mentally out there. At all. That worries me.

Next season i'd like to see some better kicking and consistency as he could be an elite small forward. But credit where credits due to both club and player. Well done.

I think that would be four out of the last five seasons that he's kicked 40+ goals? That's a great return for a small forward. Carlton were insane to let him go.

Even better is that he could easily have had more. His set shots weren't great this year and he dropped a lot of easy marks. If he gets those aspects sorted out he's going to be even more damaging.

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere on the site yet but this is a pretty good summation of what Garlett has achieved in his first year at the Demons. Loved watching him kicking back-to-back goals against Alan Toovey on Queens Birthday (also, how good was Brayshaw in that play?)

He's probably exceeded expectations and I was always happy with this trade so a very good first year with the club. To play every game in any team is always a wonderful achievement.

Obviously his set shots need improving but his first touch too can be a let down at times, the North game in particular where he had a Jack Darling moment still hurts but he usually finds a way to make up for it.

Garlett has been a great pick up, his burst speed is ideal for quick entries into a vacant forward line, his agility off packs and snapping ability, plus the boy is solid one on one...

Love him!

The acquisition of this bloke is why I think those in charge of the club are 'switched on' - they saw what we all saw, a lack of a small presence in our forward line - both defensively and in attack - and went out and got one of the best in the league at a cost that is about 30 picks above what we should have paid (~ND30).

He then proceeds to come in and do exactly what was desired of him. Just an excellent piece of work from Roos, Viney and the FD.

On Garlett himself, he can get better, he might slow down soon but that would be good because he needs to just calm down sometimes and do the simple thing first - like marking the ball. He created so many goals but screwed up a few of the chances he created too.

He should get more and more damaging as Jesse becomes Hogan in the next few years...

What always suprises me is how often dangerous small forwards are left to their own devices. Rioli in the GF was an extreme example, but we saw it a lot with Garlett this year - he'd get the ball in space with nobody near.

I'm not complaining now that we've finally got a small forward on the list to burn teams. We also have Jetta specifically for the job of making sure small forwards can't just do as they like.

I thought he waned a little towards the end of the season. At the start he was taking the game on more, looking for goal, and pressuring hard. The last few rounds I thought he lacked confidence and was too worried about missing the goal and letting his teammates down. Besides that though he gave us exactly what we needed. Could have easily kicked 60+ goals had he kicked straight.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
