Harley Bennell

Todd Viney on Triple M yesterday was honest enough to say that we have enquired about every young midfielder that wasn't sure what they were doing, the likes of Shiel, Treloar, Dangerfield, but we are just not an attractive enough option yet for these type of players.

Bennell is absolutely everything we need on field having loaded up on one paced midfielders over the past couple of years.

I'd be staggered if we weren't at least doing our homework on him.

Obviously it's a huge punt with his off field stuff but it might be good for him becoming a smaller fish in a bigger pond.

Apparently Barrett reported on The Footy Show that the Saints have done a lot of homework and will be making Bennell an offer. I hope we are doing our research too.

It's why losses like yesterday are more than just a meaningless result, as some have suggested.

Why can't you say anything more..?

Annoys me how people say they have heard certain rumour but refuse to go into detail for some unknown reason.

Bit silly to start something and get peoples hopes up then not dwelve into it any further personally.

Come on, don't be silly. He has probably said more than he should have already.

Rioli is probably the only player more gifted in the AFL...Bennell is a class player.

Should we make a play for him? I don't know. Seems to have a bit of baggage, can he leave it behind and start afresh? That's the big question.

Worth the risk in my mind. But his price is 'getting higher' by the week. If we can get him cheaper than Motlop then we win. Have full confidence that our staff/playing group can iron any residual personal issues (or at least supply him for a lot less down south).

I have been a no for a long time, but have heard some good reports about him lately and being mentored by the right people. Wouldn't trust him back in WA but FMD we desperately need outside speed, quality and quick ball movement and a player like him to take the game on.

If the FD want to back themselves for the right price I will back them but there would need to be certain KPI''S and conditions in his contract

I could live with this:

MacDonald Dunn Jetta

Vince Tomlinson Salem

Watts Viney Bennell

Trengove Lynch Petracca

Kent Hogan Garlett

Gawn Jones Brayshaw

I/C Tyson Stretch ANB Garland/Dawes

Em: Frost Dawes/Garland/ JKH Newton

Edit: Van Demon In

Tomlinson, Lynch and Bennell all in one trade period? I'm guessing you are trading Howe (he's worth a second rounder at the moment) and trading all our 2015 and 2016 future picks. That's about the only way it will happen. But I like your enthusiasm Roger!

You would get someone like Jetta to mentor him.

Terry Wallace on trade radio mentioned out of all clubs he think Melbourne would be the best fit for him.

I think we will end up with pick 5 or 6 which i would straight swap for.

Thoughts?

I actually think he'll stay with the GC now. He has cleaned himself up and is playing good footy. They Suns MIGHT trade him given a huge offer but I don't think he'll be traded anymore.

I think GC are trying to salvage some of his value.

Fattening him back up for market before they make his ongoing welfare someone else's concern.

I don't mind if that ends up being us.

Having said that, I'd guess Wallet is just musing.

Glass jaw.

That was a legitimate attempt to spoil. A total accident. No premeditation. Now his son is a field umpire. We're up against it in any game Brent Wallace umpires. Hold on, umpires are always fair minded, even handed and honest aren't they ????

A public nuisance? Wow, really serious.

I find the whole thing ridiculous really.

He is the unluckiest bloke to have been caught out when somebody provided that picture of him snorting you-know-what because I would say 80 percent of players within the AFL would be doing the same thing during the off-season. They're recreational drugs and the reality is that kids aged 18-26 ish will experiment with these kinds of drugs in a way that is perhaps less 'carefully thought out' than guys in the older age bracket. Of course it doesn't 'look good' when news like that is leaked but it ain't nothing but the truth.

The way people paint these kids is as though they're criminals. Harley obviously has some settling down to do. As he gets older he'll learn to party more 'responsibly'.

I guess the Hawks should get rid of Luke Hodge after his little incident on the Thursday night. The Captain of their club....

I'd have no issue in bringing Harley to the Dees and I'd back our coaches and development 100% in bringing the best out of him.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
