Viv is exactly what you want from a B-grade player. He works hard, wins his own ball and rarely makes a mistake with it. It's great that he's into the side now and if he keeps up with this form he should stay there for a while.

Maybe for neither. The reality is that we will always have a few players out. Most unusual was that we started this year with only two (Petracca and Trengove). Although he adds depth, it may not necessarily be at the expense of anyone. After all, how many predicted that VandeBerg would be in our starting 22 each week and Grimes not?

If we can add Michie to the group, then we keep applying pressure on Newton, Viney, Tyson etc., and we add depth where we need it most.

And so he should. I'll say nothing against him, he's hard, professional and never stops working but the reality is that he's past his prime. There is a very good reason the Doggies delisted him. In our poor midfield he's been a great addition, but as we improve he's going to once again find himself a bit too slow and limited. That's where he'll complete his transition into a playing coach and then a straight-out development coach. As my friend from Doggieland said, if we want to be competitive he can't be one of our best 22 players.

Young Crossy is just about out of gas unfortunately. He is such a wonderful example to the team but the old legs just show a bit more now even with his super work ethic. If he is still playing next year we have not progressed quite enough or maybe if he is still on the list but spends his time playing for Casey to again drive high performance.

I would love it if it was improvement and not injuries that saw these guys become 'core', however Cross has been superb. It would be a fair level of improvement by them before Cross was not considered best 22.

Michie was great and as mentioned, has all the attributes to become an important foot soldier in our midfield rotation.

Also agree with the remarks re: Cross. He's been great since he's come across, but expect by the end of the year he should be struggling to hold a spot. Wouldn't be against giving him 1 more year, as long as it's mainly just to play at Casey and be available to call upon if we have a bad run with injuries. Would be nice to help him get to 250 AFL games.

I don't disagree that the end is near for cross, (and I kind of expected it to have happened already) but his numbers are still really solid and he is hard at the contest which is what is both getting us into and also winning us games, when he can't do that send him to the pet food factory (joke).

Sometimes when you go to a game live, it is difficult to tell who some of the best players are because you don't have a single focus like a TV camera. But last night, from Viv's first possession, both my kids and I noticed him. He seemed to be in everything from the inside tough stuff, to the two way run, and the forward momentum. There is no way he can be dropped or made sub for next week.

It looks like Roos' love of midfielders, and making Casey players earn their place through form over a number of weeks is producing a really strong mix of midfield players.
