I find it difficult to watch footy on TV now because the commentary is so bad. It makes me angry

Radio is still ok as long as i avoid Andy Maher

I must be getting old. But TV Commentary is junk...

Yep. The old commentors would get into the emotion of the game. Never focus on an umpires decision.

"The man in white is always right"

Today the commentary tries to be ahead of the game.

I get bored.

"Melbourne are right up the backside of Adelaide so far."

Yesterday's gem from Riccuito.

Can't channel 7 get anyone better than Cameron Ling and Nick Maxwell....

You could add Matthew Richardson, Wayne Carey and Luke Darcy to that bunch. Not many commentators besides from Dennis and Bruce who really intrigue me these days.

I actually thought Roo was pretty objective and balanced with his call. I quite like him.

The others were ordinary, especially dunstall. To call dunstall ordinary is offensive to the word ordinary.

The AFL now needs to cover nine matches a week on Fox Footy, Seven, Fairfax, ABC, SEN and MMM. That's six outlets, excluding all the interstate broadcasts I don't know about. There are not six good commentators and/or special comments personnel in Australia. No wonder I watch every game with the sound off.

My dream lineup would be Anthony Hudson and Gerard Whateley calling the play-by-play with Jason Dunstall and Scott Lucas doing the special comments.

The rest are fairly uninspiring or dreadful (Dwayne Russell).

Josh Frazer from QLD just won pillock of the north.

Im a big fan of Anthony Hudson. He really calls the game with passion especially the good close ones.

Bruce and Dennis are just well ahead of the pack.

Dennis I agree with but Bruce has this terrible habit of trying to squeeze a quick bio in about each player every time they get the ball.

I like Scott Lucas but he really screwed up last week with Tomlinson during the half time break saying he'd been quite and needed to step up in the second half when he had been subbed off early in the 2nd Q. This was more a resource problem with SEN...

As far as the Sunday analysis shows go, I steer well clear of TV and listen to Finey and Robert Shaw. I know we get short changed at times but their footy analysis and discussion is streets ahead of 7 & 9.

As for the nepotism twins Basil (Denis' illegitimate son) and Hamish (the bosses brother), the less said the better.

Going back, I used to really like the Friday night ABC team of Gerrard & Tim with special comments from Parkin & Schwab.

Usually can't stand Riciutto but yesterday he did job at hiding his allegiance and gave some decent input.

So sick of everyone on 7, the language they use, the commercialisation, attempts at being clever and witty that fail miserably. [censored] like "He joins the prestigious club of first goal with second kick" They hardly even spend 50% of the game calling it. They try and squeeze benign stories about players and making conversations with each other at every opportunity.

Posted

It's the worst, all commentary on footy, it's embarrassing and I don't know why 7 and Fox don't get in the ear of some of these idiots and tell them how to do it properly. Just call the [censored] play.

I usually mute it, but today I was switching between playing Mortal Kombat and the Geelong v Gold Coast game and I heard some of it.

Jorrod Garlett kicked the most electrifying goal of the round, about 14 bounces running at 90kmph, and the commentator, whomever the [censored] it was called it like he was live at a funeral, Garlett just murdered some kittens and got a Joe the goose in a 60 point lead... No enthusiasm at all.

I've seen more passion in D grade soft porn.

On a sort of related note, can we get a show like that goggle box thing that shows fans watching the footy? It would be hilarious.

Clinton Grybas was my favourite (RIP)

If I could hand pick a line up to commentate every game I'd just go with:

Anthony Hudson & Tim Lane for the main call. Two of the few professionals still in the game.

Michael Voss for Special comments. Loved his work in the media when he was doing that.

Tiffany Cherry Boundary Rider: Doesn't try and make it all about her which nearly every boundary rider is guilty of! Knows her sports medicine to!

Lovely guy Clinton Grybas. Worked with him for 2-3 years when the ABC had the rights to the NBL (his other favourite sport)

Back when 25,000 would rock up to a Melbourne Tigers Game 1997-99

RIP

Bruce I'm afraid is not delicious. His rhetorical questions give me the runs.

Agreed. I would love to have the sound off but find it funny without the crowd and game noise. Wouldn't it be great to have a crowd/game noise on, commentator noise off function

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
