The Rising Star Thread - Congratulations Jesse Hogan!

I really wonder if it does matter when they get nominated. I would have thought that in the final judging, they will look back on each nominees whole season and draw a conclusion from the consistency of their performances.

Quite right hardtack. Date of nomination has no significance.

The process is: At the end of the season, nine AFL personalities (typically administrators and All-Australian team selectors) vote for five of the twenty-two nominees, with their top selections earning five votes, their second selection earning four votes, etc. The player who receives the most votes is the winner.

If Hogan gets nominated his consistency will put him right up there to win it.

If he doesn't win, it may bug some people on DL but I doubt it will phase him.

I reckon being in the AFL Team of The Week and votes from both coaches in the AFLCA will put a smile on his dial!

Gary Ablett Jnr, Dane Swan, Jonathan Brown = never nominated for the Rising Star

Jordon Gysberts x 2, Cale Morton, Sam Blease =nominated for the Rising Star

Yes, that's all well and good, but a certain N. Jones also picked up 2 nominations for the Rising Star.

Further re-iterating his point, which was that getting it or not getting it has little bearing on one's career

I'm just saying, just because a player gets a RS nomination, doesn't mean they will turn out to be a spud (which is how the post read).

For the record, I place absolutely no currency (other than whatever financial reward the actual winner gets) on the whole Rising Star hoo-ha. The actual WINNER usually goes on to have a good career, but as we all know, one nomination does not a career make.

Its not supposed to but how do you explain 3 winners past round 8 in the history of the award?

And the consistency argument is an aberation from when the award was first established. It should have nothing to do with consistency. Its about a future star, not who has had the best first year.

According to the bookies Hogan is 2nd favourite at $3.25 behind McCarthy at $3.00. 3rd Patrick Cribbs $5.50 and then Matt Crouch $13.

Its my belief Hogan's consistency (if continued) will get him over the line. Best they hurry up and nominate him.

Spot on GNF, was going to post the same thing. I'm spewing i didn't take the $8 at the start of the season. He'll win and $3.25 is still overs. Its only that rprice becasue he is yet to be nominated but barring injury (heaven forbid) there's no way they won't nominate him, no way.

Get on this week peeps.

He is giving good backman headaches. There are some teams we are yet to play with some holes in their backline that will struggle to contain hulk. He should take out the rising star award if he continues his current form. Contested marking machine.

So as a hypothetical Hogan plays say 5 great games at the end of the year and JKH plays 20 games averaging 14 possessions, you'd pick JKH?

I get why the panel are seduced by the best first year player theme but its not what the award was established for. And from what you are saying if a player play1 game, a blinder in roudn 23, and is nominated he can't win the award. That is a joke. A player that is nominated in any round should be able to win. And a player who is not nominated (say Gary Ablett Jnr, Dane Swan etc) should also be able to win.

The award needs a total revamp.

McCarthy has been excellent and was excellent again on the weekend against the crows who are a good team.

Quite amusing listening to the conspiracy theories on here.

When does McCarthy cop the opposition's best key defender ? Answer, never. Not once. The opposition put the most work into Cameron. Hogan isn't a foil for anyone. He's the man.

I like McCarthy and don't begrudge him the nod, but Hogan beats McCarthy in just about every relevant stat except goals per game. Hogan has more disposals, more marks, more contested marks, and the same average marks inside 50. All while copping the best defender and playing for the team with the least inside 50's in the league.
Even on the weekend it was 21 disposals to 12, 9 marks to 6 and 3 goals to 4.
Not to mention he splits packs and creates goals for teammates. One is a power forward, the other isn't.
It's no major issue, but there's a flaw in the award when the best 20 year old and under in the competition hasn't been recognised.

Yes, you may well be right... but we are not talking about what it should be. My comments were based on what it is now...it should be who has had the best season out of all those nominated regardless of which round they were nominated in.

Yes but that's not what it was when it was established. Its what it has morphed in to. And in effect there are only 8 players that can win it. Those nominated in the first 8 rounds.

I would still take Brayshaw from here.

It is only early days yet.

Duggan - 23 possessions (8 contested, 56% DE), 4 tackles, 8 inside 50s, one behind, 2 goal assists

McCarthy - 12 disposals (5 contested, 75% DE), 6 marks (1 contested), 1 tackle, 2 inside 50s, 4 goals 1, 1 goal assist (on Cheney)

Hogan - 21 disposals (9 contested, 57% DE), 9 marks (2 contested), 1 tackle, 1 inside 50, 3 goals, 2 goal assists (on Roughead)

It has to be Hogan this week. McCarthy is unlucky he hasn't had one yet though, but it's only a matter of time

Yes and for this performance Fitzy didn't even get in team of the week. At least Hogan's efforts were recognised to this extent!

The system is flawed.

The nominations don't allow for a good player to be awarded if he is not nominated.

History shows that if you are not nominated before round 8 you have buckley's of winning (only 3 have won outside that). Getting nominated in rd 22 is almost impossible to win.

It USED (original concept) to be an award that awarded a player who was going to be a bona fide star. Now it is simply a 'best first year player' award with number of games and consistency etc being the major factors.

Its a crap award and I am happy if no melbourne player get nominated. Our history of it isn't great (Gysberts nominated twice, Morton etc etc) It simply means their contract value goes up, they think they have made it as a football player potentially and other clubs start sniffing around to get them. No benefit whatsoever to the club.

Its never been who's going to be a start award. Its always been who had the best year. The voters don't take into account what the player may become its all about that one year.

I disagree. It was never a best first year player award but a future star award.

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
