Loved this guys' game, a real goer and the future of the MFC

BTW whats the matter wirh newton? Havent heard anything about him is he injured?

Newton going okay at Casey.

Looks a likely lad - loved his tackling and contested mark. Could easily have had 2 goals.

With Harmes, ANB and Stretch (as well as the more obviously highly rated Brayshaw and Petracca) we had a pretty good recruiting season for young talent - and throw in VDB as well.

I suspect that many may have thought that the first three youngsters may have had to wait until 2016 to get a decent look in - surprised me and though works in progress haven't disappointed one bit.

Wasn't Harmes taken the season before? Still, very happy with his progress.

I could be wrong but can't the dees promote another rookie due to pedersen's long term injury.King should be given a go,2 yrs on rookie list is long enough.Hunt and O.Mac may also get a go as they are already on the senior list.

As we cannot make the finals why not take a chance on them? Hunt,White,KIng,O'Mac,Harmes what good pick ups so unlike the Neeld days of pure insanity. The interesting question who is going at the end of the year.

See the second bolded part to understand why the first bolded part won't happen.

All three are miles...miles off being ready for AFL footy. May as well throw Jake Lovett in as well. If we dont beat GWS by 10 goals with these four in the side I'll microwave my membership.

This kind of attitude of play anyone who's had a decent half of footy at VFL level is the very antithesis of the way Hawthorn and Geelong went about building their dynasties.

Loved this guys manic intensity at the pill yesterday. Played his way onto the senior list and I really hope he carries on leading the way.

If only every player on the list had the same.

Have a feeling this style of play is non-negotiable from now on.

I worry for players like Watts and Garland...

I looked at this guys forearms { in a manly sort of way, nothing inappropriate ) and his biceps seem elongated to me and capable of immense strength. He'll be something great for us no doubt

I thought he was brilliant yesterday on 3 fronts:

1) His terrific contested marking

2) His pace

3) His toughness, which was on display since his debut.

I admit I wrote him off last week due to his poor ball use but was pleasantly surprises yesterday.

Then again, I wrote off Jack Viney after the Essendon Nab Challenge game

One or two posters on here seem to right off guys that have played one or two games, a lot of them teenagers or 20 yr olds. Harmes has been one of them.

I think James could turn out to be a terrific player. Like ANB, Stretch and Brayshaw, James was drafted and placed into the side because he loves contested football and it shows.

I've posted before about Harmes' ability to get his hands free when being tackled. He is slippery and manages to get the ball out in tight situations. His distributing of the ball will improve but his basics around the contest are terrific.

His contested marks on the weekend were wonderful, the absolute highlight for me. Plays will confidence and a good hard edge around the contest.

We don't look like a team of stick figures running around - (as in Morton, Gysberts etc).

We are at last hard enough - and we had a team full of goers, with <enough> ability to get us over the line. If we drop of in hardness (cf Watts) or ability (cf McKenzie, Bail etc) we lose and lose badly.

I think we have about 25 (yesterday + ANB/Forst/Kent/) or 27 (Petracca/Trengove) who will form the nucleus of a good team. Pederson probably get in too. Dawes/The Prince maybe.

At last.

Exactly. Posters on here far more likely to go the other way and anoint players as future stars after a couple of games.

Has happened with Newton, Harmes, ANB and White after their debuts this season. Kent and Vandenberg to a degree too.

Not sure if all supporter bases are like that or whether we're just so starved of success we desperately try to convince ourselves that having done a couple of nice things, this means they're a guaranteed 200 game player for us.

I have edited myself.

Glad we all agree that Harmes is in that group of younger players that will build this side up!

As exciting a prospect as Salem & Gus. Has decent leg speed and reads the play very well for a first year. 2nd efforts at this early stage also.

Hogan is the spark that may finally light the fire thats been barely flickering for nearly a decade. We only played a mostly 2nds team on Sunday though so there's much work still to be done. Draft selections will be critical as always.

Definitely like the look of our young crop of late/rookie picks.

Neal-Bullen, Stretch, Harmes, White, vandenBerg, and JKH all picked at pick 40 or later in the last 2 years, and have all looked likely. History suggests not all will make it, but there will be at least 3 or 4 good players in that bunch.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
