Well Done Nev always had faith in you and thought you were somewhat unlucky to be delisted last season

Good news story for the club and the AFL and a lesson to all about determination, never giving up and the rewards that come when you apply yourself and put the effort in you have

Mi wonder if the delisting was a master stroke of psychology by Roos to spur Nev on. Whatever, it worked a treat.

I've never got the impression he needed motivation or a spur on; he's always appeared to work hard from the outside at least, just hadn't been able to pull it all together.

He just needed some direction and a role that suits his skill set.

anybody else had the thought that Bennell, who was recruited in the same draft one round earlier, and from the same club and has had a somewhat similar role/career, might be coming good for us now had we not delisted him? Has played 16 games for the Eagles this year. Theh again if we had them both they's pretty much be in competition for that back pocket spot. That's not me having a go at the club BTW, at the time his delisting was a reasonable decision - but perhaps the pair of them are a lesson in patience and faith?

edit: just checked an eagles forum (feel filthy) and they have him at 6th place for their player of the year

Agree with that. He's also had some untimely injuries along the way & could rarely string games together

Credit to the coaching panel for finally putting him in the right position. I always thought he & his mate Bennell (sorry OD) were played at the wrong ends of the ground. That's despite Jamie's relative success in the back pocket for West Coast.

Nev is a defender who likes to go hard at the ball and harder again if the opposition has it. Loves body contact. His highlight tape when he was drafted was something to behold. He just smashed into blokes.

the replacement for Matty Whelan we have been crying out for for years

Now that we have found an elite small defender who is a tough as nails and destroys his direct opponent every week thats 1 less hole we need to fill

Jetta is surely the revelation of 2014

I am more than beside myself, nearly wore my 39 jumper into work this morning, but the anal retentives would probably whinge

Nev was delisted to create another midfielder spot that Roos wanted, unfortunately at that time he was the obvious candidate, Jade Rawlings went into bat for him to be rookied

One full preseason without a hiccup, one pre season without an operation of any kind, finally having a body that let's you perform, being played in the role that you love, he is now able to show the talent that got him drafted in the first place

Ask the players about Nev and the one thing you get back is his character, he was never going to go down without a fight.

I kind of feel sorry for the first GWS player he lines up this weekend NOT

Niffty is a ripper. I always liked his aggression and attack but thought his tank and skills were an issue. Exact opposite to how I feel about Watts.

Welcome back Neville hope you play 200 games and win a couple fo permierships

Save this threat - should Nev's form drop off next year these posts will make interesting reading.

Not as interesting as the posters who were convinced that Jetta was a 'list clogger' being proven utterly and completely wrong to the point where their own introspection should put into question their knowledge of football.

Because no-one goes from 'list clogger' to one of the best small defenders in the game...

Did you wear the jumper to bed last night Saty, or did you make Mrs Saty wear it?

Either way, she would've been horrified reading of Nev's new contract.

She was safe, didn't see the news till this morning, besides which she is his second biggest supporter, so I was safe as well

If Nev's body behaves there will be no form drop, if you ever get the chance to have a chat to him about footy, take it

There is no shame in "getting it wrong" when judging players. AFL recruiters do it all the time and they know much more than we do and they have so much more information.

What I dislike is the bitterness and bile that gets thrown at these players by people who have probably never reached anything like that players level of expertize. To them footballers are some sort of comic book heroes that owe the supporter some sort of joy. When they fail to deliver many act like spoilt little boys who lash out and throw a fit.

I also just love it when a player like Nev "makes" it. Against the odds and with some limitations in what he can do he's now become a very important part of the team and a very valuable contributor. And these same people who throw the bile and bitterness in the direction of players like Jetta now rejoice with no sense of how hypocritical they are and no thought that perhaps they should rethink how they judge players in future.

Well done to Nev in particular because this thread is about you but also well done to players like Ricky Petterd, Jamie Bennell and Stef Martin who are establishing careers at other club "against the odds".

As soon as we hired Paul Roos I made the call that Neville Jetta will be a star under him

I reckon now Nev is getting true belief in his abilities, he can go on to be a multi role player for us, a run with, a small defender & even on-ball as well as he develops. I still think we will find a bigger stronger small defender yet who can also kick.

I hope Nev will go on to be a 200 gamer?

Congratulations Nev.

Who said the coaching can't help make or break a player? Roosy showed belief and no doubt told him a few home truths, and Nev put his head down, worked his butt off, and deserved every accolade and success that he himself ultimately achieved.

I seem to recall it was Rawlings who showed the belief and convinced Roosy to keep him on the Rookie list

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe
