WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JAYDEN HUNT

It's a proud moment for me as a life member of the South Metro Junior Football League. A number of lads from the competition were drafted tonight including #2 Josh Kelly and of course two of the three players drafted by Melbourne - Christian Salem and Jayden Hunt.

BTW Hunt is an athlete blessed with pace and for those worrying about us missing out on Nathan Freeman and his burst of pace, Hunt is no slouch and he definitely has an enormous upside.

When I saw the playing list for the VFL Young Guns game, my interest was piqued noting his age and where he came from in comparison to the others on the list. He played a couple of games with Old Brighton Grammarians Under 19s late in the season and featured both times in their best players.

The quintessential smokey!

"We're pleased because we rated Christian Salem who has got some elite ability and will add to our midfield mix. The approach going in was to get the best available player at that pick. Jay Kennedy Harris fulfils a need for us with speed and endurance, he has really good character and is a nice kid. On that alone we are rapt to get him into our footy club. Jayden Hunt came through school footy [at Brighton Grammar] with Josh Kelly and Salem and was right up with them as a player when he was much younger early but they grew and he didn't and he dropped off until he grew again. He did some eye-catching things in school games this year."

Robert shaw is a brilliant coach of young footballers.

He is churning them out at BGS.

Must be something in the sea air for sure.

....and they love playing in red and blue!

Kent handballs to Hunt.... oh that's not ending well.

...and back to Kent, and back to Hunt (repeat)

Not ending well in my attempts.

Somehow, Brighton Grammar didn't win the APS premiership, despite having three draftees (2 - Kelly, 9 - Salem, and Hunt) two more who played for Vic Metro U18 (Le Grice and Hayes) and another who played in the Vic U16 team a couple of years ago. That's six guns, and they were all playing the majority of matches.

Maybe their not winning premierships despite being scattered with young stars reflects lack of depth at a much smaller school than the likes of MGS, Xavier, Scotch and Caulfield, nor the huge sports scholarship that win Haileybery several flags.

As far as I can tell, Hunt is the only player drafted that the AFL website did not and still does not have either a profile picture, nor a highlights video.

We've done alright in the recent past with kids of a similar vein: Howe, Tom McDonald, Terlich, Matt Jones...

They all prompted a "Who the..?!" response.

Lets hope Hunt joins the list.

Pretty sure Howe had his own youtube highlights video before he was drafted. But I agree, and there is something more exciting and intriguing about lessor known players as opposed to those with big write ups and high expectations from the get go.

Trivia fact: Jayden is the nephew of former Dee Andy Moir (#29 remembered mainly for his speccie on the goal line)

And the number 29's vacant too!

Trivia fact 2: Jayden is a descendent of five-time Collingwood premiership player Harold Rumney, who was part of the Magpie era when they won four successive flags from 1927-1930.

Just watched his highlights and have to say his pace is electric. Love that we have taken a genuine punt. Speed was obviously the trait underlined on the recruiters whiteboard this year.

Good pace and balance with the ball, nice kick. It's going to be interesting to watch him develop but he has a huge upside and might just be the bargain pick of the draft.

I don't know why didn't we secure GWS' pick 48 as part of the Dom Tyson + pick 9 for pick 2. GWS passed on this pick, and we then used pick 57 on Jayden Hunt.

It's all academic if we would've picked Hunt with pick 48, but I would've thought we could've got an upgrade from 57 to 48 given that GWS didn't even use it.

Are there any players between 48 and 57 that seem worthy/better than Hunt?

...don't know, bit late now though wouldn't you think, if somebody hasn't got a life they may want to hunt down the vision on 10 or so players today and out guess professional recruiters

Know nothing about him... he had a quiet game in the Young Guns game:

7 kicks
6 handballs (5 contested possessions)
4 marks
3 tackles
2 clearances
0 scoring shots

However, we had absolutely no hesitation in reading his name out... no 'umms' or 'ahhs' at all. From what I've read and seen post-draft it sounds like we may have got a little diamond in the rough.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
