Stupid crows fan?

(Doesn't understand that Sylvia is a FA)

That's ridiculous.

They definitely would trade Horlin-Smith for pick 2.

Whilst he has been highly rated in the past, they expected him to come on a bit more this season than he has.

And even then, he was never rated highly enough to ignore pick 2.

... and let's face it, the hyphen would be far better suited to the MFC than at sleepy hollow.

I did not say we would trade pick 2 for him or that they would ignore pick 2 for him. The cats rate him highly and do not want to lose him. Of course, if we were stupid enough to offer pick 2 for Horlin-Smith they would likely leap at the offer. In that regard, you are correct Machiavelli. It is not going to happen so the point is moot. The club has said they have singled out about 5 players they have their sights for a pick 2 trade. Do you honestly think Varcoe and/or Horlin-Smith are one or two of those 5? Didn't think so.

I don't think a day is allowed to go by without someone at Melbourne announcing that the club is likely to trade selection two in the upcoming trade period. In fact, it's getting to the stage where it's downright embarrassing to hear the trade pick two mantra from our officials because it sounds very much as if we're inviting all comers to make us an offer and nobody's biting.

Viney said Melbourne’s second selection was still potentially up for trade.

“It’s a super attractive pick, so there’s been quite a bit of interest in that and we’ve had quite a bit of discussions with clubs,” he said.

“We rate that pick really highly, so won’t be trading away lightly. Either way, if it’s on the table, certainly [we’ll look at doing a deal], but we won’t be giving it away for a bag of chips.

“But it’ll be a good player or good players and that’ll help, otherwise we’ll go to the draft and add some exciting talent to add to the young guys we’ve already drafted.

....

“We’ve interviewed some of those guys and particularly those guys who we think we’ve got in the pick two mix.

“This is probably the third or fourth time we’ve spoken to them, so we’ve got a really good handle on some of the personalities, but it’s good to speak some of the guys we haven’t seen as much.”

Maybe we should focus on trading pick 20 and the Sylvia compensation pick be that pick 21 or 41 for guys like Myers, Henderson, Michie and Greenwood or whoever else we can find if they'll be best 22 midfield. Pick 2 might just be too hard to trade without an obvious out of contract player keen to come back to Victoria.

Is it possible that we could pick up Aish and still trade our other picks for a decent mature pick? I actually think that's what will end up happening. The SANFL GF may give us a real indication of Aish's potential. I hope he burns it up and makes the decision a no brainer.

Bottom line - I'd love us to recruit our very own champ and my blind optimism still thinks we can.

if we cant get what we want for pick 2 in trade i am just happy that we now have people at the club, led by Paul Roos, who will be able to finally develop our players

Whether that is James Aish, Luke Tapscott or Michael Evans or anyone else

its exciting times

You make a good point HH. If we are backing the coach, then we are surely backing him to be able to develop young players significantly better than we have done before.

I hear pick 2 could be traded to a club like hawthorn for two or more second tier mids.

Tend to agree as I think this is the only way we can obtain 2 decent INSIDE midfilders to enhance the list

I would think that if we traded pick 2 for a single player that player would need to be an A grader and i dont see this happening

Cross could be a valuable addition as well

I would expect Roos to have some good info on the value of a midfielder around the 20-24 years old range that other clubs have delisted especially in teams with a settled list

Plus we still have Magner and if Roos didnt think he has a future he would have been delisted in the first lot IMO

Taggert is also one i will be watching

Would be ironic if the compensation pick we get for Sylvia turns out to be an A Grader

There is going to be competition from a lot of teams to get our number 2 pick. They need to out do each other if they want it, if none provide us with what we want then we use it ourselves. A much better position than last year when we were desperately chasing single targets/players other teams did not even want and us being screwed over to try to get them.

Inside and outside mids are outdated concepts.

We need good well rounded mids who win thier own footy and run hard to receive.

Please lets not repeat the mistakes of Bailey/Prendergast.

I am sure the current fd know what they want.

thats the best way to put it, contested footy playing mids, who'll put the body in.

True, although he would still be at home representing GG or GC in the Head of the River.. Just ask Peter from Peterborough

I am worried about our pick 2. It annoys me that we happened to get it in one of the more shallow drafts of recent times. I know we have spoken to a few clubs but are any of them realistically willing to part with a top line player for a pick 2 in a weakened draft. Adelaide honestly is the only club that needs pick 2. The rest may want it or think about it but they don't need it.

I've been trying to work out who we could possibly snag for pick 2 and it's tough to see a deal happening.

As others have said, why would a club trade a known 22-24yo gun for a potential 18 yo gun?

Would only be because a) they have an abundance of talented mids and want to manage the age dispersion and/or b) one of their players want to return to Melbourne and they want to get some value for them.

So the likely candidates are from interstate clubs; hence the rumours of Sloane, Rockliff, Shuey and Swallow.

Sloane signed an extension for 3 years in 2012 and is club champion (not likely to go anywhere), Brisbane apparently rejected our offer for Rockliff, leaving Shuey and Swallow as candidates. I think Swallow is the most likely as he ticks both a & b boxes.

What is there to worry about? Even in a shallow draft, pick 2 is worth a hell of a lot... in fact, it is worth more than it would be in a deep draft as pickings are much slimmer. And besides, if we don't get to trade with it, as someone else mentioned, we still get to use it in the draft to get what we need (no one in their right mind would believe we are going to be contenders in the immediate future... even if we did get an experienced mid in a trade).

We have the best midfielder in this draft at pick 2. Surely clubs would want to trade for this pick. Key position forwards usually go higher in the draft, et Boyd so basically we have pick one in the draft. Common Roosy pull out some magic and get us a star!

Apparently Swallow's manager hasn't heard from Melbourne since our initial inquiry 6-8 weeks ago.

Just on pick 3, ST Kilda are keen on the idea of letting Nicky Dal go as a free agent and are confident on getting a Band 1 selection for him given them pick 4, the reason they will do this is to trade pick 3 and 4 to GWS for Pick 1 and 10. This will hinge on the AFL confirming they will get Band 1 for Nicky Dal, if they get band 2 they will keep him.

Posted

Why would GWS do that trade? They don't need more picks, they're likely to take Boyd now since Buddy shafted them anyway.

cant see Ainters getting a band one for NDS.... too long in tooth for that. he might snare a band 2 on a really good day. Band 3 most likely. keep in mind compo is weighted to the NEW contract.. and that wont be trucks of bullion

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
