I say go after Simon Black as the Successor (that's if we don't already have him lined up)

Or even as an "on field" coach for 1 more year like Junior Mcdonald did with GWS - Should be able to draft him for a bag of peanuts

Feels like the right kind of candidate to learn from Roosy for 2-3 years, and would be great for the young midfielders to learn from.

Well I guess Dew is out of the running. The thing is I dont think we need to rush on a successor. Roos has at least 2 years to work through it. We can see which assistants will be suitable. But I reckon Brett Kirk would be a very good senior coach.

More than happy to wait until next year but I want the senior assistant together with Roos for 2 years.

Continuity with Roos is the ingredient most important for a successful transition.

The players have to trust the senior assistant when they get the job. That trust is hard to build in 1 season alone.

We also can't sell guys we want to trade in on the packaged deal. I was looking forward to this next year when we can show potential recruits just how well the Roos and assistant have worked and so on. Now this year we sell Roos for one or two years then who knows takes over and this time next year we might be selling 1 year with Roos and a brand new head coach.

Players want to move to a place where they no a coach rates them and will be around for a long time to keep rating them.

Disagree on both points.

We bring in the successor late and its Melbournes 8th coach since Daniher left mid way through 2007 (Daniher, Riley, Bailey, Viney, Neeld, Craig, Roos).

Bring in the successor early and it's Roos' man taking over.

And Kirk just seems a bit too alternative to be a good senior coach to me. Not to mention we start losing and he's shot in the media.

Doubtful. Media make a lot of mistakes but they were confident that Dew was the man. It's not like their are any other names out there right now.

I'd say we've blown it for this year. Roos now stays for 3 years which impacts the finances but could be well worth it and we have the entire 2014 season to analyse coaching prospects.

To me it's about perception here, we have tried to land Dew it would appear, and we didn't. Now if we come out and say the person we want is not coming till next year, it looks bad.

Entirely possible - subterfuge aplently this time of year.

We have all been very well conditioned into thinking Dew was the "Man" we wanted. Was this actually the case or was it designed to hide the clubs real intent on a Successor?

Yeah, or maybe we were keen to get Dew as our midfield coach, but not as the anointed Successor. We are all guessing at this point, and will probably never know!

Fair point you make though, given that Sydney were carrying on, saying that Dew was not being offered a genuine upgrade in position. And if there was a genuine upgrade on offer to Dew, why has the Coaches association backed the Swans. More paper bags?

Maybe this is a blessing in disguise.

The longer it takes to find a successor the longer Roos stays as head coach. Which is what we all really want.

Who knows, maybe this coming year will change his mind and he will want to coach on beyond the next 3 years.
