Tough on viv I reckon. I hope he has a brilliant year and forces his way back on to the list

Places will open up.

But compared to this year, he'll be behind the likes of Melksham and Bugg, plus hopefully Petracca and Trengove. Not going to be easy.

Posted

I'd be happy with that outcome. Hanging on by a thread, no doubt, but does get one last shot. If he's good enough he can force his way back in ala Jetta.

Good luck.

Posted

If we don't think he's good enough for a senior contract, why would we bother rookie listing him?

He has been in the AFL system for five years, it's not like we don't know what he is capable of. He's only unlucky by virtue of the fact that others like Jones, Newton and Terlich have contracts.

With our recruiting and drafting over the past two years, he probably is not in the best 15 midfielders on our list, so I think we should cut our losses and move on.

^^

poita - spot on

A long way down the pecking order of mids, we know what he gives......try another rookie who may rise higher.

I will just wait on confirmation before updating my Contract thread.

That won't happen automatically, by the way, he will be delisted and then available for all and sundry until, I assume, our last pick in the Rookie Draft.

With King and White still on it and Harmes and Vanders coming up off it, we will have RD6 and then Michie will be selected in available with RD24.

For those who say - why bother? Just move on if you think he is 'delistable' - what sort of talent do you think would be available at RD24? And you are peddling the same argument as those that asked the same of keeping Jetta around.

If those that have eaten their humble pie about Jetta don't see the similarities with Michie's situation then they are suffering from acid reflux...

In these drafts I think it's worth it. And in fact with Michie's late season form I think it's worth it.

Although I think it's a bit different as Jetta was being remodelled as a lock down defender and we weren't flush with backline options. In some ways we weren't drafting the same player who couldn't get a kick up forward for most of his previous AFL career.

As an inside midfielder, and that's what Viv is, I think he's behind Jones, Vince, Viney, Tyson, Brayshaw, Vanders as the 6 I'd have in the team. Plus ANB and maybe Trengove if he gets back. Harmes and Newton can play that role and we are yet to see what Petracca can do.

Just from watching a few trainings and games though I have been critical of the way Michie covers the ground and that improved late in the season, if the shock of being delisted really spurs him in to increasing his fitness he might surprise me and plenty of others.

Personally I'd rather delist and re rookie Terlich because no one will want him. I wonder if someone like Richmond would make a move for Michie. He carved them up in the wet.

Because we are running short of spots and he is possibly a good depth player

that and Rome wasn't built in a day !

By that I'm acknowledging that the list is a 'living' thing and continues to morph. We won't get it all done in this trade/ draft...nor even the next. Is continuing to be refined and bettered.

Id expect the FD to think along such lines as to do what can be reasonably and affordably done this...same next and so on.

Posted

Well its past the 2pm deadline and there is no news of anymore delistings so it looks like Michie is still on the books.

Posted

Do you only have to nominate rookie upgrades by today ? i.e This isnt the last list lodgement so you might possibly be in limbo until the last lodgement ?

Posted

It really is this simple. The midfield depth isn't good enough yet to be giving Michie the flick.

I rate him higher than most, I concede that, but at the very least he is useful depth.

I agree. We must be much better than I thought we were if Michie is not to be retauned

Do people realize there is still another list lodgement to go in November..

yes but don't player contracts expire on October 31. Would have thought he would have to be delisted or resigned. Maybe it is the later and we just haven't heard yet

I would like to think if we were to delist someone we would tell him now, to maximise his chances of being picked up as a DFA.

Just seems the fair thing to do in my mind.

Posted

Yeah, but this can be a cruel game sometimes...

There are two more DFA periods.

This is when it no fun being an AFL footballer.

Some blokes have no idea what they will be doing next year - about 100 AFL footy players I reckon would be having a chat to SANFL/WAFL/VFL teams or a country team with some cash or their old Amateur club, because they are not certain whether they will be back playing AFL in 2016...

Teams/clubs hedge bets. A less than desirable reality.

I agree...but this might just be part and parcel of the big bad world. Not ideal...just what IS.

Haha. Like Jetta has become Andrew McLeod. Jetta has gone from an E grader to a C grader. Calm down about Jetta and humble pie. For every 1 of him there are 50 that don't improve and don't deserve to be persevered with.

As for pick 24 in the rookie draft...probably about the same as mitch white last year at pick 20-odd who, off a limited pre-season, suggested that he might be a player.

6 ft one paced midfielders with ordinary foot skills are a dime a dozen. Turn the list over and don't hold onto plodders.

Posted

Jetta is excellent at what he does. He's not an A-grade player because small defenders rarely are. rpfc makes a good point.

Posted

Could the reason why we haven't heard any news, yet he's still on our list (list lodgement lodged today) be that his initial contract with us was for 3 years and not 2?

I haven't been able to find any old articles that state how long his contract was for?

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
