3 days....

So when we get Viney can we scrub all the Viney threads which are 90% speculation and start off fresh, with a new Viney thread, heralding all that is our new savior, or what?

He's a culture changer apparently.

Not sure I'd say that's a reliable source, even though I'd like to believe it's true.

Side note: God I hope we don't trade a first rounder for Dawes.

They usually bring out a source at some stage, still waiting for it though, will post when it arrives

Dawes and Rounds for pick 13 and Martin, lol...................lol.

Rounds is a nobody and i believe Martin for Dawes is a fair trade for both teams. So we just throw in pick 13??? yeah, no.

The filth can gagf, if they think they will pries pick 13 off us now that Wellingham is out of the equation.

Alot of talk about hard decicions and not taking short cuts. I dont keep an eye on the young talent so some other people might be able to comment futher. But if Viney isnt the 3rd best young talent avilable when we take our pick we should not take him simple as that. Pick number 3 means we get the third best player in the draft.

Is Viney the third best?

Think Dustin Martin v Tom Scully and you get similar to Whitfield v Viney (I know Martin is taller), it's Viney for us.

Is he 3rd best, well I guess that's the debate or part of the debate on here. It would seem there are a group of players similarly rated in top 10 throw up the cards and see which way they land.

Great if we can get him in the 2nd round but on pure player value we lose nothing taking him at 3.

Well, I suppose it depends on what the club is after. Midfielders that are ready to go seem to be one of our requirements, and you would have to think Viney fits the bill... so yes, for us, he may well be the 3rd best player in the draft.

We've gone for what were widely considered 1st (and 2nd) best a couple of times in recent drafts... care to reflect on how that has gone for us?

I think this is attempting to make up for the mess we got ourselves in when we announced we'd committed to him all those years ago - we've now got to show ourselves as distant and non-commital to the kid.

The only mess we got ourselves into was the one that came about through only winning 4 games and finishing 3rd bottom. Had we finished 8th, everyone would have been over the moon at getting Viney at pick 14 or whatever.

If we need to use pick #3 for Jack Viney, then YES YES YES YES.

Jack Viney must come to us. He is exactly what we need. Tough. Gets the footy. No backward steps. Jones and Viney would be a start to a tough inside mid group.

Celebrate & welcome Jack aboard. He is NOT going to GWS or GC ... NOT MATTER WHAT.

When was the last draft in which the rankings afforded but 'Draft Experts'and the clubs themselves held firm?

There is not a single year in which the top 5 players drafted turned out to the the top 5 players immemorial.

This is exactly right.

Top 5 selecting is not an exact science as sadly we are all too familiar with.

So when a born-leader, son of a club legend who is tough as nails you can take with a dibs on him you'd be stupid not too. Melbourne know what they need to do, and they will.

No it doesn't. All clubs have different needs and perspectives, different game plans, are at different stages in their development etc. etc. One club's pick 3 could be another club's pick 10.

Viney is definitely our pick 3.

Just about every other father/son pick up at other clubs seem to go through with little fuss and relative cost. I just wonder what the hell Todd Viney is doing or has been doing in his various roles the club for the past few years.

It is nothing to do with anything that Todd has or hasn't done; it is a change in the rules by AFL, introduced unfortunately after Geelong got Scarlett and Hawkins so ridiculously cheaply.

Viney is definitely our pick 3.

But apparently some think that we don't need a tough, ball hungry, totally aggressive inside mid who has already played against men and acquitted himself well; they must be the ones who feel we should just let him go for another unproven (against men) young 'gun'.

so how did viney go at draft combine he wasnt in the top of any results did he compete surely GC are taking the [censored] saying they will take him

Why don't you go back over all the draft combine Top-10 results and come back to us with a list of superstars who are in there.

Then I will counter it with a list of champion footballers that are not.....

It's Viney at pick 3,DONE!

Only the MFC could [censored] this up.

Cale Morton won the Larke Medal and he's been $hitting himself ever since at AFL level.

We need Viney at ANY cost to show our peaheart mids (bar Jones) what tough contested footy is.

Viney has been assessed as 8th best buy professional analysts.

If u think he is better - that’s a separate argument.

A hard negotiator would make the Suns aware that the MFC won’t be using #3 to recover Viney, if they select him at #2.

The Suns would then know that they would be using their valuable No 2 pick on an 8th ranked player.

The Suns hierarchy later would go ballistic if they find their recruiters have taken an 8th best player at No 2. The net result would be that they pass on the 2nd best ranked player & we probably pick him up. Then the late 2014 threat that Viney goes to the draft after 2 years. The Suns are facing a lose/lose option IF WE HAVE THE FORTITUDE TO PLAY HARD BALL(?).

And if the Suns genuinely believe we won’t activate the F&S rule they CAN NOT SELECT Viney unless they really want him over however is No 2..

Our recruiter/selectors are duty bound to pick the best available player by taking a hard cold approach.

Football is way too serious for heart to rule head on this one. Take the small risk.

Says who? Your entire post is based on that assumption. Back it up.

There was an article a few weeks ago saying several AFL recruiters rated him 6-8 in the draft, must be what's referred to i think

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
