  1. Was worried about this game, said as much in prematch, in that I wouldn’t throw my toys out of the cot if we lost, still doesn’t mean I’m not very flat. Looking forward I am a bit worried, however clearly want to say the attitude of the team is OK and very proud of MFC, they do care and I think they will be motivated in the return bout. Fagan was like a school boy at the press conference he was so stoked they knocked us off. They had a pretty good game, are a good team and that useless basterd Hipwood suddenly found his mojo, and Hibberd was the Cameron specialist. But what worries me is I think we have three issues going forward, one is down to luck, one can be fixed, and the other worries me as it seems endemic to our style. The issues are: Injuries, Mids, and Conditions. The luck thing is injuries (and 3 games in two weeks) - we have a lot of niggles early, am sure Trac is carrying a leg injury, Petty is NQR, and that is not his attitude, Oliver was a mistake to play, we are missing Brayshaw and that hurts, Salem gone early, Bowey, Hore, Turner, Hunter (not that I’m that keen), McAdam, Melksham, Spargo, these injuries can change or not, but the reality is we are up against it early when we require collective effort to achieve the synergy our game plan requires. While noise is made about our stars, it is actually our team game that makes us awesome, I’m thinking we need freshening up because it is that team defense that allows us to transition back so well and we basically have too many midfield holes atm. In terms of just poor performers -JvR is in trouble, would love to know why, McVee had a bad game and is mortal. Howes ditto, Brown needs to be spelled regardless of what he says. The thing that needs fixing is the Midfield, we have had challenges all year and for a lot of last year, Kossie is basically our best speed through the middle, looking at Port/Sydney/GWS and today Brisbane, they all have higher top line speed (not necessarily effort). We work hard enough, it’s not a fitness issue, but we need more speed, Maybe we need Windsor on ball? Our pressure is ace in the middle, no bruise free players, but not sure how we are going to go with the best if we can’t get some speed. Contest alone is not enough anymore, we have been worked out there. I also think that is the worst you will see our stars play. The 3rd issue for me is conditions and we’ve had this challenge for awhile, have spoken on this before post Sydney, but with our manic style we need a very good 1st touch, one fumble and the other team has caught us. Because we are a great team, work ethic, and defensively minded etc, we get a lot of these booboos back. But the good teams are better with a slippery ball than us, if it is not a dry footy I am very nervous against the good teams. It seems like a long time since we were good in the wet, dew, humidity. I haven’t seen anything doe to address this. Love that Langdon, May, Lever, (a goal, wow) Tmac, Chandler, ANB and the Captain all had a go. I thought even though they looked likely to lose from early, the team still played with pride, and I would have clapped them off anyway. It is such small percentages between winning and losing, I hope we find those inches. Love the team and the staff.

  2. How rude you are to question Clarry after 150 good games and he was not at or near his best (like about 5/6 others). Players are human and to see him do all that work and you openly ( or sarcastically) ask about a trade? please don’t contribute if you dishonour a champion so horrendously because you are in a shi..y mood. And the forwards were poor but again not necessarily as disinterested as you assert.

  4. The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling. However, even Gawn’s herculean dominance throughout the night in that division worked to the advantage of the Lions. There, the numbers told the story of the game in stark detail. For the night, Melbourne won 58 hit outs to Brisbane’s 27, a figure that might at first brush indicate a thrashing in favour of the Demons. The clearance figures had them down by 35 to 44 (it would have been worse, but Brisbane released the pressure valve near the end). The Lions were so successful at brushing off the Dees and sharking Gawn’s hit outs that I found myself at times hoping that McInerney would win the tap out so that the rhythm of the game would be disrupted sufficiently to afford a clearance opportunity to Melbourne. The match had been dubbed as “season defining” for the Lions, one that could spell the end of their 2024 top four hopes even this early in the season. On the other hand, a win would have them in the frame to getting their season back on track. And given that it was dual Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale's 250th game, they had a further purpose in their plans to unseat the Demons and put to bed their Melbourne hoodoo after last year’s narrow defeat in the Grand Final and in the last encounter between the two sides in Round 18 2023 when they were monstered in the midfield late in the game in an epic come-from-behind thriller. This time, it would be different. Cam Rayner was on fire in the midfield from the very beginning. He dominated the game inside and out with 12 first quarter disposals, seven of them contested, six clearances and seven inside 50s. By the end of the game, his count was 25 disposals, 14 contested possessions, ten inside 50s, nine clearances, and seven score involvements. Josh Dunkley finished with 30 disposals and nine marks while Neale himself knocked up 24 disposals and eight clearances. To put it simply, they were first to the ball. I place emphasis of these numbers because Brisbane left Melbourne in their wake with the much-vaunted trio of Christian Petracca, Jack Viney, and Clayton Oliver notching up a mere 61 disposals and 10 clearances combined for the game – also improved late by the release of the Lions’ pressure. So dominant were the Brisbane mid-size brigade in the first half that Neale, who usually leads this group numerically, had the only sixth highest number of team possessions with 12 which equalled Melbourne’s best, namely Kade Chandler and Max Gawn. The latter’s figures were exemplary, he finished equal top in possessions with Jack Viney and accumulated 149 Dream Team points which was 57 points greater than Ed Langdon who was next in his side. The Demons were clearly flat after their successful trip to Adelaide where fans could have noticed that writing on the wall when they were goalless in final quarter against the Crows. This was their fourth match in 19 days, the third in 12 days but the fans were expecting so much more after the success of their business trip to the City of Churches. Before they left Adelaide, the team should have stepped into one of those churches and prayed for more strength and energy because the first three quarters of last night’s game were emblematic of a group that was perilously low on petrol tickets. It left them with an aggregate of three goals over their past four quarters, a figure they exceeded in the final term when the Lions had well and truly taken their feet off the pedal. At half time, the crowd was treated on the MCG screens with a magic act from Magic Mike, a Demon fan. The club would have done better employing him to work some magic and remove the wall that the team was about to hit because the mounting pressure on the field and on the scoreboard induced a sense of panic that left supporters frustrated. Two examples of the panic were Petracca’s attempt to goal from well outside range that was easily mopped up by a Brisbane defender and Caleb Windsor’s blistering run of three bounces which ended similarly. A more measured approach in both cases would almost certainly have resulted in a score, most likely a goal. Petracca should have done better in the circumstances; Windsor will learn from his experience. It was a bad night for the many young players in the team including first gamer, Koltyn Tholstrop who looked a little overawed but did show some good signs for the future. Like Windsor, he will also learn from the experience. The failure to win clearances clearly added pressure on the team and made it harder to score. Moreover, Melbourne struggled to move the ball from its defensive fifty throughout the game with 28 of 47 chains intercepted by Brisbane and only six going inside fifty for a single goal. All of this reflected in the embarrassing statistics in terms of possessions and marks for the likes of Ben Brown, Bayley Fritsch, Harrison Petty and Jacob van Rooyen (at least he was giving Max a chop out in the ruck) – again made to look better in the last half of that final stanza when the Lions went for a well-earned end of game nap. Of course, the Lions’ midfield dominance added to the pressure on the defence which did well in the circumstances to hold the opposition to 82 points for the night. At times, Brisbane was able to use pace to slice through Melbourne’s defences with ease, but credit should also go to Steven May, Jake Lever and Tom McDonald in holding them to that score, and in the end, the difference of 22 points, was enormously flattering to the club. Melbourne simply couldn’t take a trick. The loss of Christian Salem early to a hamstring injury was compounded by the injury to Jake Bowey and retirement of Angus Brayshaw. By way of contrast, the Lions so comfortably negotiated the evening that they didn’t bother employing the tactical sub, so James Tunstill sat on the bench for 100 minutes. The bye could not have come any sooner. 6. Yes, the worst thing that ever happened to his career was helping us win a flag. Can’t believe he smashed his opponent on grand final day. Disgraceful behavior. He’s backed up every year since 2021, even last year with a badly injured foot. Fritsch would get a game in every forwardline in the league. I swear Demonland post loss is unhinged.

  7. Hardly the end of the world. Brisbane are an excellent team, very unlucky not to be the reigning premiers. Their "poor" start to the season has been significantly overblown. They have won the inside 50 count in every game they've played. A couple of teams have kicked insanely accurately against them. They were never out of form as the media would have us believe. We got beaten where it matters most, and beaten easily. The limp performance of our mids was the reason we lost. Neale, Dunkley, Rayner and McCluggage (with Berry) absolutely smoked (to use a Steven May term) Petracca, Oliver, Viney and Sparrow. That is the game in a nutshell. The odds of our midfield being beaten that badly again, all on the same night, are slim indeed. For those criticizing anything at all about Gawn's game last night, have a good hard look at the replay and then yourselves. McInerney is a good AFL ruckman who is as honest as the day is long and Max tore him apart. Gawn's tap work is elite. We lost a lot of clearance from our mid's fumbles, overpossessing or simply actually losing contest. If Gawn didn't play last night, that's a 10 goal plus loss everyday of the week. 8 clearances to the big man was better than anything anyone else on our side could do. McDonald is looking like Tom of old (final year of his contract - he's done this before!) Kudos to him. Might have been worth a shift forward at half time, but in reality our defence held up well given the amount of ball they saw. Can understand why Goodwin didn't shift him. Pickett is a huge loss, as we all know. We can't afford for him to be missing games. We look completely different with him out there. Expecting a big bounce after the bye.

  8. This is a [censored] post IMO. Even if you're thinking if, even if it's true, he's an 18-year old debutant playing in a side where his A-grade teammates were getting belted. More importantly, he clearly isn't ready for AFL level football. That's on the FD, not him. He simply should not have been picked. I want us supporting our kids, not throwing them under the bus.

  12. Oliver - Shouldn't have played. Clearly hampered by the hand, couldn't pick up the ball, couldn't grab an opponent, it was like trying to play with one arm. Hopefully it gets sorted during the break and he's back to his best soon.

  16. i looked around at the team last night , in what was a horrible loss for us, and understood a little why. A. We had 4 New players. Howes, Windsor, Kolt, Woey … all still finding their way against a hardened, focused top 4 team ( Even though Windsor gave us speed and looks great he’s still finding his feet). You could say we’re strong enough to cover for that and we normally might be. But… B. We also have 3 important players playing off very limited pre seasons in a very condensed series of games Oliver, Petty, Brown and three looked spent. Then add in that a two went in carrying some big injuries in May and Oliver and possibly Trac? and we lost Salem early and kozzie before the game. In short we looked like half of ourselves and just didn’t have much to give . Im still not sure how we didn’t get utterly buried. Lots of excuses I know ….but they just didnt look like themselves at all so I’m wondering why. The hope I’m holding is that we really need the break and in the back end of the year ( with more fitness into oliver and Petty and more game time into the young ones) we’re going to be looking a lot stronger than we do now.

  17. How could you not? Brisbane absolutely smoked and outbodied us everywhere all night. We were in Adelaide for two weeks, two very tough games, are completely banged up, lost Salem, a few kids running around, and we comprehensively beat them in the last quarter. It's a huge positive how they ran out the game because that could well have been a 10-15 goal loss the way it was tracking. Brisbane looked set to open the flood gates all evening and we never let them. Richmond lost by 8-10 goals multiple times in their flag winning years. Teams struggle to beat us by 4 goals despite domination. You just have to take a positive from that given how we've started the year. Listening to Max on Channel 7 after the game yesterday, he was so harsh on himself and the team. It seriously looked like they'd lost the Grand Final. Which is great that it impacts them so much but people are slitting their wrists over a 4 goal loss against a genuine premiership contender. Not saying there aren't concerns but I've never felt so indifferent about a loss before. Play like that against Richmond and I'll eat my words.

  19. Its been mentioned. Putting this one down to... 👉🏼 Koz 👉🏼 The Clarry stuffed finger factor (SFF) 👉🏼 Salem going off early at 7% game time (one rotation down from the get go) 👉🏼 Mental fatigue 👉🏼 Some physical fatigue 👉🏼 'Potentially' the fact that we continued with a plus one behind the ball and didn't even up the numbers around the contest or if we did it was too little too late. 👉🏼 Brissy's mega pressure and clean ball use, bounce of the ball as well Can't be sure about any of the above though of course. Mere speculation. Brissy brought mega pressure for the first three quarters while ours was well below AFL average* (approx 185-188 on pressure rating) aside from the last quarter. * @wheeloratings

  20. I don't think we can underestimate the loss of Salem on top of Bowey and Brayshaw. Howes and McVee have been playing well this year but they we under siege and we really need some experience to quell the influence of McCluggage, Bailey and Cameron.

  21. Firstly the club never used it as an excuse, but let's remember that not only was it 3 games in 13 days, it was also interstate travel AND coming up against a side who had a bye and then a game against North, which is basically a bye. We had 2 very hard contested games against Port and Adelaide, lost Salem in the first 10 minutes which left us down a rotation, plus Clarry who was, for the first time probably ever, a total liability. Having said all that, you are right and Brisbane played us very well and deserve all the credit. They smashed us in clearances, in contest, in ball use, in efficiency, in tackles, in just about every single stat except hit outs. They deserved that win, and the final margin flattered us.

  22. Wow, you sure are hellbent on ditching Clarrie. This is the second thread tonight in which you’ve suggested we trade him. You say he’s a country mile away from the player “we know he can be” which begs the question: why would we trade him when we know what he can (and will again) be? He’s playing with the fingers of one hand strapped together ffs.

  24. He’s continued to kick goals though, as per his job description. He’s unfortunately our main forward and is up there with the best in the league at that job, despite his size. No he’s not necessarily tough and I have seen him take a few short steps over the years. I’ve also seen him show great courage in the air. I like that he shows a bit of arrogance at times. Sometimes our team seems to go out of its way to keep its head down a bit too often. He’s not a bull and there’s a certain element who seem to think if you aren’t jack Viney than you are lacking something but Fritschs strengths well and truly over power his weaknesses. A team needs balance. He has been one of the best forwards I’ve ever seen at the club.

  28. He struggled with the pace of the game, but he's an 18 year old playing his first game at the level against last years grand finalists (and deserved premiers). His effort was good, he got to a number of contests early, laid a number of strong tackles and showed some footy smarts. He's got a good frame and with more size he'll break some of those tackles he got held in last night. Midfield scope in future. He'll be a player with more time to develop. Poor night for him to debut. His team mates should apologize to him for the pathetic effort they served up. He needs better leadership than what he was offered last night.

  30. Kolt was fine, he is going to be a good player. He is used to being bigger and stronger than his opponents which shower with him trying to push them off. When he fills out he will be much better. The first 5 min of the game i recon he was tackled 4 times for a ball up which doesn't show as a stat on the scorecard but they are important touches none the less and shows he is in the right spots. He will be fine and i hope he gets another couple of runs this year!

We just looked flat and tired almost from the very start. There's obviously a lot to work on but I'm happy to write that one off. The week off to refresh and reset will do us a world of good. I certainly wouldn't want to be Richmond on Anzac Eve.

  33. Meh, kid played in the toughest spot on the ground in a midfield smashing, I thought his work rate was good, he held a number of strong tackles and he had good energy. Might be dropped or subbed but I doubt there’s any long term effects from a quiet debut. Not sure exactly who else we should’ve played. I suggested Kynan Brown but he’s so light he would’ve been brushed aside just as easily. Otherwise AMW as a forward but maybe that’s mucking his development when we might need a dashing defender very soon. Plus we need him to develop as a player.

  34. 3 tough weeks, everyone clearly spent from the get go. I'll take 2/3. Salem out hurt us early and nobody but Max able to get to the level. Posters throwing toys out of the cot need to reflect on all the other times they've overreacted. Shouldn't have to go back too far to find examples. Move on, take the flattering scoreboard into the bye and hit our winter at the G from a solid 4-2 position. Go Dees.

  36. Since Round 1 2021 we've only lost 8 H&A games at the MCG, including last night (out of a total of 39 H&A games played at the G). Whilst we've also lost the four finals, the point about losing H&A games is that H&A games are where we prognosticate about our finals/flag chances. And the point about the MCG is that that is where the majority of us members go to watch us play live. Also, this is the earliest into a year we've lost at the G since 2019 (we lost in Round 3, 2020, but that was on 28 June given the COVID shutdown, and was played in front of no crowd). We didn't lose at the G in 2021 until July whilst in 2022-23 we didn't lose until the last weekend of May. So last night, we all walk away being somewhat "shocked" by losing, because we just aren't used to it of late, and particularly not this early into a season. We're all a little shaken by it and it naturally makes us start to question 2024. I think that explains why there have been so many posts here along the lines of "I don't know what to make of our season", or "I was sucked into the four wins", or "we weren't really any good against Port/Adelaide". I don't actually think last night tells us much we didn't already know. We are not talented enough forward of centre to win games when we are beaten in the midfield. The same thing happened in Opening Round against Sydney. Not coincidentally, Pickett missed both games. A low inside 50 count makes winning hard enough but doing it with a sub-optimal forward 6 missing its most naturally talented ground ball player makes it near-impossible. We can keep ourselves in games with our collective defensive effort. It's been said a lot but keeping Brisbane to 82 points and 22 scoring shots was a great effort given how dominant they were in the other two-thirds of the ground. Indeed, if Trac had kicked that goal after the JVR goal, the margin would have been back to 30 points with 9 minutes on the clock, and we'd have kicked 3 goals in about 2 minutes. The Brisbane supporters around me were already nervous before his miss, given what happened late in our game last year, and the Melbourne crowd was awakening. The fact we were even able to be in that position at all was due to our ability to restrict their score through the first three quarters. But as much as we keep ourselves in games, we also know that when push comes to shove we are prone to being beaten when we are not on top in the middle. So we can't keep playing an unfit Clarry, or an unfit Viney, or an unfit Trac (Clarry's clearly unfit, Trac came off a lot yesterday and was getting strapping so it won't surprise me if he's carrying something, and Viney looked like he still had the flu a week later). We certainly can't play multiple unfit midfielders. When Pickett doesn't play we need to find someone else to inject spark into our CBAs, and we probably need to accelerate the transition of Rivers into the middle because his run and carry is needed there. I doubt we'll see a collective Oliver-Trac-Viney failure like last night again, but if we do, bank on a loss, because we aren't good enough to cover for it.

  38. People calling Fritsch a front runner are seriously deluded. He is in the top 5 for overall goals kicked in the last 5 season, playing as a medium forward. He's kicked only a handful less goals than Jeremy Cameron has in 5 years for goodness sake. He also kicked 6 on the biggest stage of all and would have comfortably won the Norm Smith if not for Trac. If you are playing Melbourne, who is the one forward you put all your attention on? Fritsch. Kosi of course, but in terms of who do you defend in the air? It's Fritsch. For such an undersized forward playing as basically our number one target going inside 50, he is remarkably consistent. He needs help though.

  40. Petty had a stinker but the ball was almost exclusively sat on his head and he tried to negate Harris Andrews more than win the ball. Of course none of the forwards had it easy with the midfield pantsing, but my issue isn’t just with Fritsch but with the coaching that allows or asks him to constantly be out the back. Someone has to break a line to get it there and good teams don’t allow line breaks. It also puts him in a terrible position to impact defensively. And doesn’t let him use his skills. Honestly I think we got stuck playing Adelaide Oval football. That’s what I see Fritsch out the back as being. A narrow ground where you can get from the wing to over the top of the defenders. MCG football requires a hit up at CHF. it’s been the missing piece of our game plan for years. Fritsch takes his turn to hit up at times and other times he will get it out the back. That’s unpredictable ball movement and fluent team play. Jeremy Cameron was a bit of an out the back artist at GWS. He moved to Geelong at 27 and became a much more complete player. Same age Fritsch is now. I see no reason Fritsch can’t keep developing his game.

  44. That was the worst midfield game we’ve played in probably 4 years. To hold them to 22 scoring shots and 82 points is actually a good performance all told given how utterly awful we were at contest and clearance to three quarter time. I doubt we’ll ever see Oliver, Trac and Viney collectively play that poorly again. I sure hope we don’t. Oliver clearly isn’t fit and we conceded that by shifting him to half back; we had to get him out of the stoppages. Viney reverted to old Viney, no awareness and too many ill advised attempts to break tackles. And I would not be surprised if Trac is injured. Couple that with our opponent having an elite midfield and then all of them firing and you end up with us being wholly unable to play the game on our terms. Windsor looked to hit a bit of a wall, Howes was poor, Billings was poor and Kolt’s clearly not ready for this level, so that middle third of the ground was just so bad. I’m inclined to write it off as a mulligan, but we have a major midfield/stoppage problem that wasn’t just an issue tonight but has been evident all year. Rivers looked good there late so I’d like to see that continue.

  47. The fact we kept them to below 100 given the dominance needs to be recognised, the defence did what they could and it also means the desire was there. But utterly smashed in the clearance, so were losing field position all night. And when we tried to clear, we have no one capable of taking a relieving mark, or even square a contest up the field. Tall forwards were woeful.. And that was the game in a nutshell. Zero field position, and no way of getting it back out.
