  1. On a brighter note Ben Brown is the father of a new baby girl. I saw the announcement on Instagram and, after congratulating the new parents, made a plea that he doesn't sit her on his knee for the next few weeks.

  3. the replies here are hilarious. We are the Kings of relying on excuses: Last year it was 'we had to play 2 games in Cairns' 2019 it was pre-season surgeries 'they changed the 6:6:6 rule' is probably my favourite Until Melbourne start winning games consistently commentators will keep saying this stuff.

  4. Someone mentioned there was a family situation he needed to be there for. It obviously would be something important for him to head over there. I'd suggest the 'poor form' is criticising the young man without knowing the circumstances.

  5. I'll start with a negative.... Signs similar to this ( see the bottom of the page) were featured around the outside of the ground and were concerning. I thought about wiggling under the fence to get in but then had horrible visions of getting stuck and a slithera feasting on an unfortunate PF For dinner so decided against it. Training report . I arrived around 9.30 to see that the ground was in "Pristine" condition. The players were starting warm up drills and conditions were pleasant enough with the faint edge of a breeze to allow for comfort 1 No shows Kossie, Vanderberg 2 Modified programs Melksham, Gus, Austin Bradke Petty ( although he did feature in some of the drills) 3 Warm ups consisted of End to end 20 m apart with partner routine was to Throw ball in air spin on the bounce and kick left or right footed depending on where ball landed. Another one was to lie down flat jump to your feet and pass ball of 4 Simulated drill involved games of keepings of where pink jumpers would be running interference and players in blue jumpers were required to create options and to hit targets with close in handball 5 Simulated drill same as above but with ability to kick to targets further up the field the obvious match stimulation was to engender being creative and then defensive depending on which color had the ball 6 Whole ground simulation with tackling included. Again Pinks, and Yellows on rotation vs Blues in creating attack from defence and again being accountable for an opponent in zone like situations. Observations For me I remain concerned at the inability of players to hit targets mainly by foot, some of the kicks were either too short, way over heads or just sloppily executed. Although the wind did pick up the concern for me of addressing errant disposal is still a worrying sign. Point is at training your not going flat out so when real pressure comes on then skills under pressure will be found wanting. Similarly too many handballs are to players who arent really clear and therefore requires extra evasion to get clear. Having said that the players appear to be very fit and in good shape. Player observations OF NOTE Nathan Jones is not cooked yet was enthusiastic clean and robust, Bailey Laurie was very prominant with pace, class and cleverness, I think he will play very early Fraser Rosman, BELIEVE the hype, I actually thought I was watching Isaac Smith the way he moved and interceded the play with some lightning runs, he can hoof the Sherrin and can clunk a mark, Expect he will play sooner than later I was extremely impressed with Dogga Jackson ( yes thats his nickname) he's ready to take it to another level, athletic smooth gaining confidence and his body has developed nicely Another very impressive player was Tom Sparrow , for a big man he moved very well got involved in play and was no slouch in the skills department Tom Mc Donald has slimmed down but I'm not sure his pace has improved did some nice things but got caught with the footy a few times trying to do a "Dusty" dont argue Aaron Nietschke caught my eye a few times with some great solo efforts and displayed a willingness to be involved and with good skill set Toby Bedford , Kade Chandler, and James Jordon all showed something. Thats about it as I said when at CASEY WATCH OUT FOR SNAKES!! Cheers P.F

  6. 2019 is factually shown why we were poor. The number of days missed of preseason as well as games missed by best 22 players in season due to injury does not lie. How we ended up with so many needing surgery, nursed through or playing underdone and whether we had a game style and team selection that considered this is up for question. 2020 there was no excuse. Everyone was under trying conditions. Every team had to pivot to some extent. We had games we did not show up for. We had games where we were on. Through the swings and round abouts of it all we were not good enough to qualify for finals. 2021 I am sure will throw up challenges of varying sorts. However we have lost no one from our best 18. All other than Jones, Hibberd, Melksham and Jetta should not be in career decline. We have some 2nd -3rd year kids in Pickett, Jackson, Rivers, Petty, Spargo, Jordon, Sparrow who should bring more quality to our 19-25 range than those we have shed. Them you possibly have a breakout of one of the three (four) newbies in Bowey, Laurie, Rosman and possibly Farmer to inject some first year energy or speed that we have historically lacked. This is before you include the value of Yze and Choco who both may be bigger recruits than Brown when he get on the field. 2021 holds no excuses.

  7. I understand where you are coming from dieter because i bear my own mental scars from racial abuse almost the same period into the very early 60s and from people who should have protected many of us at school instead they were not any better. I won't say any further than that..

  8. Clarkson's words diminish the victims' experience. They didn't ask to "endure" what happened to them. No wonder not many victims report this sort of thing. They are pushed to the background and invalidated, while the alleged perpetrators are supported and provided with excuses. I'm not saying Patton should be tried and convicted by the public or the media, but please, it is better if Clarkson just said, I can't comment while this is under investigation instead of waffling on about something he admits he doesn't know much about (social media platforms and the laws that apply to them ).

  9. As Melbourne supporters we are all jaded!! Since 2006 I have known we have not had the cattle. Every win was a great day, any final was an outperformance. But this is no longer my thoughts. I believe we have the best list we have had since the mid 90s. We have the combination of experience and raw talent required to win a premiership. The core of our group are peaking. We no longer have excuses. Only poor player management, bad coaching or extraordinary bad luck (of non soft tissue injuries) will see us outside of the top four. We should expect top 4. Anything less is a failure.

  10. Another great win by the girls. It also showed the difference between top and bottom sides, where the ones at the top have that group of seasoned campaigners who don't stop for the whole game. Paxman was superb again, but not as noticed this week, but she was always in the scrap in the middle. Hanks was also fantastic, and has also learnt to put the ball on the boot to clear the pack in the middle. Simply appalling umpiring decision to award a HTB against her in the first seconds of the game. No prior at all. Still she stuck to her guns and along with KP just ground the likes of Conti into the ground. Lauren Pearce was fantastic again. She does more than just hit the ball out, she has great ground skills, and this was telling when having to play against Sabrina Frederick. Richmond needed her ( when she was in the ruck) and Conti to provide drive, and they didn't get it all game. Take away the first minute and the final couple of the game, and Richmond would not have scored a major. Don't you just love Goldrick. She just has one approach...see ball get ball...and heaven help anyone who gets in her way. Can't wait to see McEvoy and McGee out there with her, that will be one tough unit. Fortunately, we cut down on the handball this week. Kicks off the ground were used instead of trying to pick it up like last week, and the result was the ball just gets to the scoring end. We still have a propensity to go for short kicks, and against a better side, we would have paid heavily a couple of times. Bannan is a real find. She is what the recruiters were looking for. Someone who has played the game all her life, and has that background of knowing when to go and when to hang back. And has good overhead skills to boot! Loved McNamara again, she will be, and has been in her 2 games another great find, being a natural footballer. Can't go past the efforts of Lily Mithen. She has stepped up to a different level, and her ability to get ball to boot in tight situations was critical. With Hanks and KP they make a first rate on-ball brigade. We have 3 talents in there and most teams struggle to have one at that level. Up forward Bannan and Hore were the major scorers, but a shout out should go to Eden Zanker who gifted Hore one of her goals with a smart tap, and then she fills in the ruck position and still does a great job. 2 from 2. Much better position to be in than we have found ourselves in past years, where we were not winning the winnable games, and we had an injury list which limited chances. With only the hamstring loss of Petrevski, we still have a host of both experienced and newer players ready to go, so we can only get better.

  11. From what I saw at training a couple of weeks ago and what I’m reading Spargo seems a certain starter. He played some good footy last year to. In his under 16 year he was tipped to top 10 from memory but had injuries after that.

  12. If Petty’s development and form is as hot as I think it sounds I would not be surprised to see Petty and Tomlinson take the main defensive posts with Lever as the third up and May to take the most dangerous small forwards inside 50 ie: Cameron, Walters, Tip, Ryan. He has the speed, smarts and agility for it as well as ability dominate in the air and/or offer further support against the big forwards. It also frees him to play a more attacking role in forward transition.

Mum sez: now yez can pick out any jumper ya want. We'll pay for it on Dad's credit card. Junior sez: I didn't know Dad had a credit card. How come it sez "Jonathan Marsden" on the card? That's not Dad's name? Mum sez: nevva mind about that. Now pick out a nice jumper, take ya time, I'm gunna shoplift some Nike shoes for Granny's birfday. Junior picks out a dark blue jumper with "C F C" in concentric letters on the front. Sister sez: wotcha pick that one for? That's not a Collingwood jumper! Sister punches junior in the guts. Sister sez: Mum! Mum! Mum comes running. Mum sez: what ya -- you little barzid. What are you doin' even touchin' that jumper? Junior sez: you sez pick out a nice jumper. I like this one! Mum sez. You barzid. How dare you. Mum whacks him across the head, twice. Mum sez: we're goin' straight home. By Daicos. You've brought disgrace to this family. I hope ya proud a yaself. Mummy's gunna put this ... thing ... in ya stroller. Now be quiet like a good girl. They go home in silence, with the jumper hidden in baby De Goey's stroller. Dad gets home. Dad sez: By Nathan, I've had a hell of a day. What with Cennalink, the nags, the dogs, the pokies, an' trainin' at the Holden Cenna ... I've [censored]in' had it. Hey Mum, did ya shoplift anyfink from the bottle shop? A man's thirsty. An how's the birfday boy? Did ya get yaself a nice jumper? Mum sez: tell ya farver. I cannot believe what I am seeing. Me own flesh an' blood. Ya know yer named after Darren Millane, don'tcha? How can you bring shame to Darren Millane like this? By the ghost of Lou Richards. Come 'ere. This is gunna hurt you a lot more than it's gunna hurt me. He gives junior an almighty thrashing. Dad sez: well son. I hope yez 'ave learned a lesson from this. Junior sez: (sobbing) yes I have. Dad sez: well, what have ya learned? Junior sez: I've only barracked for Carlton for one day and already I hate youse Collingwood c***s!

  15. Not sure what was going through my head this morning when I woke up with a sudden urge to drive an hour down the highway to Casey, however as a fellow track watcher today I can most definitely agree with PF's point about our sloppy kicking. Lots of mistakes throughout the whole session (Langdon with quite a few, Bedford too). Although this may be due to training at "the windiest place in Australia" as one tradie that walked past put it. Not sure how training down at Casey in the wind will impact our skills throughout the season and hopefully it may be possible to move back to Gosch's in the near future. Was hoping that their would be some more match simulation today however I believe they moved it to Wednesday because of today's weather conditions. Hopefully I don't cross over too much with PF, but I thought I'd add my two cents. A few points to make mention of: - Tmac was doing some 1on1 contested marking with other key position players (Weid, Petty and Tomlinson), and may be back training as a forward rather than the wing now that Brown is out. - Was good to see Hunt hit all of the kicks I saw him take (unlike many other players). Positive signs as this has been his downfall in recent seasons. He seems more mature and composed this year. - Petty training as a defender and looking very very good. Spent a little bit of time in rehab. He may be competing with Tomlinson for that last key back spot. - It was great to see Gus out there joining in with the main group for the first couple of drills before returning back to rehab. Neita back out running is a great sight as well. - Vanders and Hibbo weren't out on the track however I spotted them doing some work on a bike (with potentially Viney as well). Mitch Brown was doing running and kicking drills on the side as well with Melksham and Bradtke. Kozzie missed the session, although spoke to a staff member and they said there was nothing to worry about there. - Rosman definitely catches the eye and was the draftee I noticed most. A strange kicking technique which can hopefully improve as time goes by. Laurie did some nice things too and was very clean with his hands. - Deakyn Smith was out there training again, although without a number (Farmer already wearing 48) and looked nice. May look likely to get a list spot now that Hore is on the long term injury list. Speaking of Farmer, he did make a few basic handball errors right in front of where I was standing and looks like he has some work to do. - Players split off into two groups at end of session to do running. First group consisted of mostly fringe players (plus Weid, Lever and Jackson) and the second consisted of mostly best 22 players (Sparrow and Petty in this group too). Was a somewhat strange mix of players. The main thing i noticed here was that Burgo included footy's and kicking skills in the first half of the running session, before doing some more straight line running without footy's at the end. A few of the younger boys Sparrow and Rivers impressed me most with their running along with Tmac who led from the front. The 5 first year players sat out of the running and spent time with Chocco. - Didn't notice Trac in the second half of the session and saw him walking around in casual clothes at the conclusion. Hopefully nothing to worry about though! - No snakes sighted! Hopefully I'll get to another session soon. Enjoy.

  19. ER, for the record, I came to this country in 1956 as a 6 year old from Germany. The abuse I suffered was physical and mental. It was obviously racist abuse. Because I was so desperate to 'fit in' the racial insults became a part of my life. When I was thirty five, my best friend was a Jewish dude called Sam. He liked a drink. He'd turn up at my flat in Alma Road and tell me how bad he felt that the only place in East St Kilda he could get a drink was at a Nazi's house. Then he'd borrow my Primo Levi books. At least he returned them.

  20. I wouldn’t get carried away by 2-0. Our opposition has been ordinary. Still, a win’s a win and two wins are two out of two which is a 100% record. However, North Melbourne and Fremantle appear to be the front runners and the big tests are yet to come.

  21. Simon buckley is an absolute gronk of a human. Plays footy up in Echuca and his treatment towards some of the netballers have been disgusting. Its no surprise that he's come up with that argument against H The fact @don't make me angry has been sucked into believing this gronk makes you question society in general. https://www.news.com.au/national/footy-player-simon-buckley-admits-damaging-ex-girlfriends-car/news-story/897e17cefcd77a7bbc140431f587d3ba?sv=70544ebd71f1a5a16359b0c57d9eb3bc#:~:text=COLLINGWOOD player Simon Buckley has, handed to police on Friday.

  22. That gets tricky. On the one hand, Lumumba really might have thought little of the nickname and run with it while he felt secure at the club. Only once he was on the proverbial outer did it sting and perhaps only then did he realise he was himself enabling systemic racism by using his position of security to imagine himself 'immune. Later, the cognitive dissonance of that is now fuelling his anger in unhealthy ways. OR Simon Buckley, arriving five years after Lumumba, was witnessing exactly the situation that Lumumba described as so hurtful; by 2010 it was established that at Collingwood there was no point trying to object to the nickname so he had little option other than to try to make as light of it as possible, all the while feeling like he was betraying himself by going along with it and effectively being forced to become a part of the systemic racism problem in order to not be branded 'trouble' and 'against the team'. Both are possible, but my money would be on option B. Absolutely, seriously, you can be offended by the nickname you use yourself. It's would actually be the deepest injury when you feel you have no choice but to accept that that is now your nickname. That would also be the tangible embodiment of systemic racism or any other systemic denigration. Most of us, I think, would only have to think back to school days to come up with dozens of examples of people who had to get by with pretty crappy nicknames they didn't like but didn't get a choice on. That reminds me; I've been in a call-centre workplace where the shift manager had managed to give nicknames including 'tranny-lover', 'the fat Greek', and 'muzzie girl', and since this awful woman had total power over shifts and employment and would make a very loud fuss about 'just being a joke' right in the middle of the call centre if anyone so much as raised an eyebrow. (Suffice to say I didn't last long at this place, but to be fair there was a variety of reasons) It is entirely possible that everything Buckley is saying he witnessed is true, but, again, it is precisely the power of systemic racism that puts the curtain up so Buckley isn't aware of what's going on behind, and, in turn, is sincerely annoyed at Lumumba. And there it is - systemic racism has successfully put a wall up between Lumumba and Buckley where Buckley (and this is without any accusation that Simon is racist) sees Lumumba as a hypocrite looking for attention.

  23. You'd be well aware of the machine that is AFL football, and the need to fit in. The need to fit in if you are markedly different from others... I cannot imagine an 18yo, who started in 2005 - with the playing list below... would kick up a fuss about a nick name bestowed upon him by his luminaries, or contemporaries, when all an 18yo wants to is fit and get selected. And then you age a few years (but only still 22-25 ), and you know, no one else at the club (aside from Leon or other indigenous athletes) knows what it is like to not be white in and white male dominated industry.. (and you've got the president of said club mouthing off the way he has always done)... I'd like you to really reconsider your statement there @don't make me angry You've got no idea of what afl club land is like, nor do you know what it was like and his lived experience.

  24. “I don't think we can carry 3 talls in our forward line with the poor crumbers that we have. We can't rely on pickett or Spargo to even find the footy, let alone kick goals“ “how bloody slow are Tomlinson, Melksham, Brayshaw, Spargo, OMac, etc. I could have all of them coming at me at once and I reckon I could sidestep all of them” For the record can we assume you were hacked when these posts were made from your account?

  25. I love how all of last year everyone was canning Spargo for not being up to AFL standard i.e. 'He is too slow, can't kick 40m etc.' and now everyone is praising him for being a player that has a lot to offer and was a top 10 pick that slid due to injuries. lol. For the record, I've never talked trash about Spargo. Yes, he isn't quick but I'd much prefer someone with goal kicking nous than someone who is quick and who doesn't have goal kicking nous.

  28. it's a non issue for mine. he might lack 5 metres penetration with his kick but i don't think it's been an issue as he still hits targets better than most in our team, plus he will only get stronger the older he gets. everyone has a limit on their kick and they just play accordingly. maybe even a few others in the side should try take 5m off their kicks and try spot up a target more often themselves instead of indiscriminate long bombing.

  29. Don't get me wrong, I obviously hope for improvement but a lot of those players have regressed in their careers. they aren't 2nd or 3rd year players. I'm really excited about Trent Rivers and I'm really excited about Luke Jackson, although he is going to be wasted as a forward as he is a natural ruck. Petty, I'm really excited about but he is better as a forward than a defender. I acknowledge that it's only a small sample size but as a defender he looked nervous and made poor decisions. Up forward he looked great. So I see it as a shame that he isn't training as a forward. I put this down to Goodwin not being a great coach and the recruitment of Ben Brown. But Petty is still a forward. Salem has been at the same level for years. He is a really good player that doesn't quite get enough of the ball for my liking. He was a midfielder at the Sandringham dragons and we recruited him to play midfield but he is still just a back flanker. So I don't see how he will improve unless he adds a string to his bow and plays midfield. Hunt is an enigma. I actually like Hunt. But I don't (and never have liked him forward). And as a rule of thumb, if you're not a good kick for goal you shouldn't be played forward. Momentum is too big in todays game. Fritsch is a great player but he has consistently shown to let us down in front of goals. I like his kicking action and I believe its mostly mental at this stage so I do give him a chance to improve. Gus Brayshaw has had a limited pre-season and he is simply too slow to play any position other than inside mid. Goodwin seems to not understand this simple concept. If he plays as a full time inside mid then he has every chance to return back to his best otherwise, he is going to have another so-so season where he can't defend on the transition. Tom McDonald I think can have a big year. But it's typical of Goodwin to entertain the idea of playing him anywhere other than forward. He has built a reputation for many years as being a poor decision maker and poor user of the ball in defence. A clanger happy defender like Oscar. Up forward, his decision making is simplified. Get ball, kick for goal. This is where he is at his best.

Regardless of the opposition, it's a credit to the women's side to get off to a great start to the season. Something I feel both our women's and men's teams have struggled with in recent times is getting wins on the board early in the season. Sets up the rest of the season so much better when the team can bank the wins and consolidate a ladder position and conservatively manage injuries from there, rather than playing catch-up in the season half of the season, with every game becoming a must win just to make finals.

  31. DrD I found BRF's summary of 2019 and 2020 Both insightful and largely factual. Also His excellent listing of the potential of growth from our 2017,18, 19 and 20 recruits this season, and the effects of Ooze and Choco plus BBB when available. I also am bullish about improvement from our 22-26 yo olds and would add Hunt ANB Gus Tommo Petty Fritsch plus Salem as candidates to improve our team. Consequently your QUARTER GLASS FULL response absolutely amazes me.It completely overlooks natural improvement ( already documented in Training and Track watchers posts) plus two virtual new recruits in Petty and Brown and the already positive 2020 start at their new Club. Yes we have been Fooled more than 40 times in the last 56 when hoping for a Finals berth and only twice played off ( very disappointingly) For our 13th Flag. That overrides many pundits and comments are therefore general and historically based. I look at each year for the Signs and potential positively and believe our list and Club are nearing the time when all the jigsaw pieces are due to click ( In spite of Goody) and substance in our faith will be rewarded. Lets hope this happens and surprises the sceptics!

  33. No one is being held to "a higher standard of behaviour" here. If anyone did what Patton is alleged to have done the strict legal consequences would be the same. The difference is that because he is a public figure the media exposure for Patton is multiplied many times over. If an unremarkable person, like any of us on this site with no public profile at all, were charged over such matters and they were substantiated in court, there would be possibly one day's media exposure. The result would be that those who know us might become aware of the outcome. For everyone else the matter would be largely unnoticed. For someone in Patton's position there is no escaping scrutiny. That is the only difference.

Its more they think they are so much better than the average pleb that they run the gauntlet. And yeah, when it hits the fan it’s public, that’s the reason clubs spend thousands of $$$ on education of players. Just seems not to work well for some.

  36. Beautiful evening out at Casey. Stiff breeze but thankfully not the gale that often blows. Top marks to the grounds staff, the deck looked immaculate. Thought it could be one of those days when Frederick marked and goaled early but after that there was really only one team in it. Out delivery inside 50 was poor in the first quarter but improved as the game went on. Ball movement was pretty good actually with one passage in the third quarter in particular where we almost went coast to coast. Bannon can play. Showed real smarts to leave her opponent sitting on her [censored] while she took a simple mark and goal. Her positioning is very good, she knows how to nudge and outbody in the marking contest. I think she’ll be a great player for us. Goldrick is a ripper. Knows only one way to play. See ball, attack ball. She beat Brennan all ends up and ran off her all day. All in all I though it was a good performance. We need to sharpen up in certain areas for sure but we’ve got 2 wins in the bag which will give us confidence and belief for the much tougher assignments which lie ahead. Go Dees.

He had some injuries and for whatever other reason hasn't played a lot in the last 2 years. So not surprised at track watchers reports that he is becoming a very good footballer or that he will be in the starting 22. He has just turned 21 so a few years to go before reaching 'football maturity'. A lot to look forward to.

  40. If I recall they had finals coming up, so whaddyaknow, we'll just leave that up to the law outside of footy, no internal suspension.

  41. Ok, I'm always happy to be proven wrong and own the mistakes I make and obviously missed Deakyn also being in the team photo.

  42. I’m a believer that AFL footballers make a lot of money for being good at footy. That doesn’t mean they should just be open season from the press no matter how well they are paid. They have to uphold good community standards but still be treated as humans when they do stuff up. Patton likely has punishments coming to him in various forms and fair enough. But a lot of the media coverage was way out of line with the allegations IMO. What should be reported factually and clinically took out a nasty tabloid angle which isn’t good for anyone involved. Clarko’s right to support his player until all the facts are on the table. That doesn’t mean he’s covering it up or minimizing it

  43. This is a reflection of Clarkson's penchant for gobbledygook, where he says a lot and none of it has any substance. What is 'standards in this sport of space'? (Clarko missed his calling, he would have been a great cop, you've heard them on the radio, seen them on the TV, the ones who 'talk' above their station, using big words when plain simple language says it way better. ) In this case, he should have switched off his capacity to explore the boundaries of linguistic comprehension and perhaps say nothing: much more eloquence there.

  44. A lot of the suburban grounds were like that I think. Windy Hill and Moorabbin wouldn't have been much better. In the early days of the VFL Carlton and North supporters were notorious for their behaviour including multiple incidents of throwing rocks at umpires and opposition players.

  46. Karen Paxman will (all going to plan) play her 30th game on the weekend. For context, this puts her among only 22 players prior to this round who have reached that figure, and the first to play all 30 at Melbourne. Libby Birch reached the milestone last week with her games combined between the Dogs and Dees. At the moment, given the shorter seasons, it's effectively what a 50 or even 100 game milestone would be in the men's, so something to celebrate. Especially given it's not guaranteed (although I wouldn't count her out) that she'll reach 50, as that will take another 2 or so seasons. So congrats to Paxy! For reference, other milestones of this nature that could be reached if the season reaches completion: Scott (currently on 28 games) Mithen (25) L.Pearce (23) D.Pearce (22) Cunningham (22) Hore (22)

  49. I contacted the club via email, and they said that you had to nominate whether you wanted a pin, and If i replied to the email, they would send me one. I replied and stated "yes please", I also explained that members who choose the roll over option don't get the opportunity to select such items or choose a picture for their membership, and suggested maybe they could fix this.
