VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA EPISODE XI “ ZZENON CODEX Admiral Nelson: Leigh, can you come to the bridge I have decoded a message from the pentagon! Capt Crane: On my way! Chip take over the helm. Chip Morton : Aye Aye skip Admiral Nelson: Leigh, I have just unscrambled a code Black call from the pentagon, here read it yourself. “ Dear Harriman, hope you and Seaview crew are well, Harry we have an intelligence report that has uncovered some kind of Alien Cyborg machine that can duplicate people which is in Australia in a Lagoon in Melbourne called Casey Fields. It is called the ZZENON CODEX. Your job is to find and destroy this machine before it replicates all life as we know it. Just think what another 100,000 extra Feral supporters running around would do. The world would be plunged into Armagedon! Intelligence also suggests that a person known to frequent Casey Fields by the name of Picket Fence can be of assistance, he hates anything that relates to ferals and would be a worthy ally! Good luck” Marshal James Pentagon Marshal” Capt Crane: Jeepers Admiral isn’t this more a case for the Star Trek Crew or even Lost in Space? Admiral Nelson: Yes, probably but Fence has already used them in another episode, so it looks light its down to us! Capt Crane: Whats our plan of action!? Admiral Nelson: Simple set a course for Australia and pilot the minisub underneath Port Philip Bay and find this machine and destroy it! Capt Crane: Understand! Chip Capt Crane here, please set a course for these coordinates, oh and Chip, please equip the sub with photon torpedoes and Harpoons apparently there are giant snakes and alligators and maybe the odd Feral Collie’s about! Chip Morton: Harpoons I can do but aren’t Photon Torpedoes for “Star Trek” I’ll have to ask Capt Kirk if that’s ok? Capt Crane: Should be fine as Star Trek ratings were through the roof last week after the Klingons got a fare spanking! Capt. Kirk’s ego will be sky high so he will agree to anything plus he owes me a favor! PICKET FENCE TRAINING REPORT 15/12/2023 NO SHOWS Didn’t notice J.V and Chandler, Bailey Fritsch but they may have been there! INJURIES MODIFIED DUTIES MAX, CLARRY, GUS ( Although he was doing plenty of Running, THOLSTRUP, PETTY ( Who also ran for the first time! SKILLS , DRILLS AND MANOUVERS After warmups and Run Throughs, players broke of into Groups doing a variety of Close in Handball through traffic to hit clean target with players pressuring. One on one Groundhog Day ground ball gets. Telescopic Talls in Marking contest situations Pressure the ball carrier, two meters away closing fast to kick to a lead. Match sims ( See below for details) Half ground transitioning including stoppage work on both boundary side wings and emphasizing manned positioning and quick breakaways using precise handballs to break out of traffic and finding leading player on lead or further handball, chip kicks to favored positions to free up play and present scoring options closer to goal. Red vs Whites, this also had an element of keeping the ball in forward line and using lateral movements and handball before finding a target. So, it was as much about forwards and positioning and defense creating a chess like impenetrable phalanx! PLAYER WATCH AND MATCH SIM TOM SPARROW I mean wow just wow this guy is ready to launch, has confidence picks great options and really will excite through the midfield this year. LACHY HUNTER Has lost weight and dare I say it has picked up a yard of pace, was involved in plenty and looked rejuvenated and classy. JACK BILLINGS, Classy ball user who always hits targets and linked up beautifully today, will play major parts in games. SHANE MC ADAM The missing piece in the forward line puzzle, just oozes class, goal sense and links up magnificently, can also take a hanger and a half KOZZY, Just mesmerizing today total excitement machine SPARGO Yeah righto , he was really good today involved linked up and kicked a few goals and was busy. MONIZ-WAKEFIELD Starting to find his feet was involved in a lot of link ups and used his pace and skills to great effect and could be a surprise early inclusion if he keeps this form up. ADAM TOMLINSON Used his pace to run of the back half and set up many plays. JED ADAMS, I took notice of him a couple of times with great run of Half back and also astute ball use. Looks a player. MARTY HORE Looked right at home of half back, is an intercept king and used the ball to advantage. He could also get an early look in. CHRISTIAN SALEM I’m sure it was him ( remember I’m on the other side of the fence) and he looked really good unhampered by recent injuries and looked fresh, pacey and involved with effortless and crisp disposal. JOSH SHACHE, Took a couple of really good, contested marks and converted effortlessly, I hope he has improved enough to make the difference and looked particularly good today. KYAH FARRIS WHITE Rucked well today and looks like if he develops a bit of mongrel could be a hell of a find. TRENT RIVERS Looks like Mr. Universe with his swagger and relentless attack on the ball. FINAL THOUGHTS T. Mac wasn’t bad in defense and training levels were up from last week I thought. Ball movement was quick , precise and forward entries were purposeful and effective. Given some of the exhilarating and exotic weaves out of defense and forwards moving to effective scoring positions this training session said a lot to me about the increased pace and intent to rectify past deficiencies which have sabotaged our last two years of finals performances. Better get going I er think I’m seeing things Better go to get my eyes checked two people that look uncannily like Admiral Nelson and Capt. Leigh crane are moving towards me! Cheers all at Demonland P.F31 points

Crock of [censored]. AFL had their chance then and there to make a statement by suspending him and failed to do so. I cannot think of any sport in the world that continues to make up the rules on the spot each and every year.14 points

The AFL have left a huge out for exactly the same incident to be dismissed: "Under the new regulation sent to clubs in a memo on Thursday, a player who leaves the ground in an attempt to smother will be expected to take “all reasonable steps to avoid making contact with their opponent’s head and/or minimise the force of any high contact”. So all Maynard ( and his lawyers) would have to say was he took "all reasonable steps". After all he drew in his arms to avoid hitting Angus with his fists and forearm. And there was little else he could do when airborne that was reasonable........ The next similar case that comes up will have the same outcome. And the AFL will wring their hands, yet do nothing about it yet again. All they had to do was "legislate" that any contact with the head as a result of tackle, bump or smother will result in a penalty.12 points

The media pander to Collingwood fans in order to maximise ratings and readership. If May had done exactly the same to De Goey, he would have been heavily criticised, with pressure on the tribunal to give him 6 weeks.11 points

I'm still angry about this whole " event." I'm convinced that we would have won that game if this deliberate act didn't occur. Collingwood won a final from pure thuggery. Nothing new. Then got lucky with an incredibly bad umpiring call in the dying stages of the grand final. So much noise about us losing in straight sets when the real story was a known dirty player took out one of our best. Nothing new. And now we get a delayed, vague attempt after the act by the Afl to somehow try and show they care. Too little, too late. Nothing new. If it wasn't the greatest game in the world, I would try and find an alternative. What a shame we have buffoons in charge of it.10 points

This is the narrative that annoys me the most. The ‘changing lanes’ argument. Somehow the guy who had disposed of the ball, not expecting contact, following through his regular kicking action was responsible for the contact. Let it sink it. Once it does, you will see how corrupt the AFL is.9 points

Central to what...and whom ? The whole FB area is a developers sink hole. Any greenfield design will of course need to incorporate public amenity and by such 'some' communal recreational facilities. But it will be minimalist as that's real estate....read $$$ .You're not going to get as much in this locale that you can preside over. FB and indeed PM do have proximity to 'town' but the last i heard ...'town' is on the nose with sqM vacancy very high . Again, I have to suggest a Football Club Training Centre and Admin Facility is nothing about you or me and ONLY about what it does for the club, not the supporters. Access to FB/PM is relatively limited. A development at Caulfield does not take away amenity from anyone, it creates it. Your suggestions at FB and PM either restrict public amenity or take from it. Im pretty confident if you were to ask the club..i.e the staff and players which they would prefer as a WORKPLACE .... Caulfield would win by its own home straight.9 points

Maynard is a disgusting piece of filth. Is that going overboard? The AFL did what they needed to do to get him off the charge. My anger remains unabated.8 points

Goffy - yes I believe it was deliberate / intentional but at very least it was reckless / careless which would also have put that piece of 💩out for the finals. But , true to form, the AFL weaseled their way out to appease Collingwood.7 points

The AFL make me sick, just utterly vomitous stuff 🤮 just watch the first person who does the same thing get 6 weeks. MAYNARD IS STILL A HATED PLAYER and will always be remembered for his low act!6 points

Knowing our luck, by the time this youngster reaches draft age, the AFL will have amended the father-son rule to one where teams can have priority access to "identical name" players and this Tom Green will end up at GWS. Congratulations to the whole Green clan. It's a joyous occasion for them.6 points

The Herald Sun reports today - “The AFL will change its rules so players who lay a high bump on an opponent in the act of smothering will be suspended in response to the controversial Brayden Maynard case last season. “The league has reviewed Maynard's qualifying final bump on Melbourne's Angus Brayshaw and deemed that players in similar situations from next season must take "reasonable steps" to avoid contact or lessen the impact.” I suspect that this will not really help much. Collingwood’s case was that Maynard acted reasonably. The Tribunal could easily have ruled against Maynard on the facts - it refused to do so.6 points

Is anyone really surprised? Typical AFL manufactured outcome, Just like the Maynard ruling that let him play in the Grannie. Don't rock the boat, don't do what's right at the expense of magpie fans The AFL boys club is so [censored] predictable, even a 10 year old could guess their next move It's what will eventually drive me away from the game for good6 points

Too little too late. I’ve said from the start, the issue wasn’t the attempted smother it was the bump he turned it into after he missed the ball.6 points

Thank you all and those that sent PM’s for the hearfelt support. 💕 Also, the encouragement to come back means a lot to me. I guess it is best to ‘never say never’. Perhaps, once I reduce the time and energy drain of some online activities I’ll be better placed to come back. And, it may be hard to resist the pull of DL once the first ball of the new season is bounced !!.5 points

Ran laps at good pace so no idea!? Also Clarrie had his jumper of doing some drills and crickey he looked ripped and very very fit!😁5 points

100%. This absolutely gutless by the AFL, who didn't want to rock the boat by going against their 'golden goose' the Collingwood FC. Fact is within their rules it states that a player must show duty of care to other players, which Maynard did not. This is an a$$ covering exercise by an organisation who are spineless. Still makes my blood boil both the AFL response and the media/wider AFL community response.5 points

Biggest non-surprise of the year. Play the good Samaritan role and pander to the ‘footy purists’ by letting the good bloke play but then take proper action long after the fact so they can appease the anti-concussion brigade and show that they are (seemingly) doing something about it. Talk about bending it both ways to suit agendas..5 points

Maynard’s act was horrible. But the AFL are the disgusting pieces of filth.5 points
-
If they (the AFL) were concerned about it they could have taken action at the time. Afraid of collingwood.. you bet!5 points
-
I suspect it was a bump he was aiming to deliver all along, poorly disguised as a smother. Even Hamilton Burger could have gotten a conviction in this case. Shows how poorly the AFL handled it.5 points

So terribly predictable, both the timing and the [censored] covering.4 points

The crew here at Control are Angus’s platinum sponsor and we’re so looking forward to catching up with him again. We won’t be discussing the concussion, that’s history. His insights on the team prove to be very insightful, he picked Judd Mc as a possible surprise team inclusion during the January catch up last year.4 points

We will never know what impact that hit on Gus made to our over all team dynamics. The closest summation you can make as to what sort of impact Gus might have made in that game would be his previous finals games for the club. Which to say the least have been fairly impactful to our end results. 3rd best GF day 20 plus possessions crucial slips catch mark and goal at an important moment in the 3rd quarter. His replacement has 2 possessions for 3.5 quarters of football, huge imapct on the game.4 points

I agree, and yet, we kick straight and we don't lose Gus out of the midfield rotation in the first five minutes, and we win that game. Pies came out hard, but losing Gus absolutely stuffed us through the middle. Clarry was hampered by a knee, and without Gus we were essentially a rotation down for the entire game in the most important part of the ground.4 points

I'm not thinking about it anymore, trying my best to move on. Let's just be glad that Gus is on the track.4 points

We all know if May had done this they probably would have found a way to boot him from the game Doing it to De Goey is an unfair comparison btw....the comparison is a fair, best 3-5 22 prime mover who is universally loved by the team and across the comp. Think sidebottom, who incidentally, they would not have won the GF without I'm still furious about it all, it's such a shame4 points

He's no dog. Dogs are great. Friendly, funny and good company. Smart too. Maynard is none of those things. Maynard is a maggot. Can we agree?3 points

Thanks PF another great report for the archives, did you notice Verrall and Fullarton during match simulations as I am hoping that both will feature in the team in 2024. You should get a permanent pass into the ground, someone should raise it at the AGM on Tuesday night or maybe we should email Kate Roffe?3 points

Exactly. Gotta remember it was Gus' fault for deviating too somehow. "All reasonable steps" - christ on a bike I hate the AFL more than I hate Collingwood3 points

My mother and her family were all Collingwood supporters. When she was a young woman she went on a few dates with Bernie Massey who was a MFC player in the 1960s. She switched her allegiance from the Pies to the Dees and the rest is history.3 points

Reality: It was a deliberate high-impact bump to the head. AFL: For important commercial and boys' club reasons, it was an honest smother gone tragically, accidentally, and innocently wrong. Reality: It was a deliberate high-impact bump to the head. AFL: Because of how much this was an honest smother gone tragically, accidentally and innocently wrong, we will now introduce new laws penalising honest smothers gone tragically, accidentally and innocently wrong. Questions ranged from frustration with the fixture to why didn't we chase kpfs in the trade period/why couldn't we kick straight. Pert acknowledged frustrations with the fixture and what it could cost Dees in dollar value ($1-$1.5 million potentially), but one win was not travelling to Geelong. Doesn't know why we have been disproportionately fixture there more than others, to the extent that we'd actually asked the Cats whether they were requesting a home game against the Dees every year (they say they haven't). Re: kpfs, Lamby did say they'd jump if Tom Lynch was available, but there weren't any possibilities that were better options than Petty (he was effusive on what he could bring over a full season up forward), and given we'd gone tall in consecutive drafts (Roo & Jefferson), want to see how they come on. I relayed a question from my daughters on what we can expect to see from Riv and Sparrow, Goody said Tom 'oozes leadership' and they're excited to see how his game builds this year, Riv is building and we can expect to see him in midfield more and more, his speed and agility through the middle will give us a different look. Selwyn Griffiths mentioned a bit later on that something seemed to have really clicked for Riv last season in terms of mindset and that he's ready for more midfield minutes. Overall I enjoyed the event, there was really good access to the key decision makers at the club, and the greatest value (imo) came after the formal proceedings when all staff were available for an individual chat. Given my obsession with all things draft, it was great to chat to Lamby about the recent draft period. Didn't give away a whole lot that wasn't already out in the public domain, but it was clear that we really liked Nick Watson and my impression was that after Harley, Watson was the guy we were targeting. The clubs ahead of us just wanted too much. There wasn't really much of a conversation with WC for a future 1st, that might have been exaggerated in the media (re:offer for our pick, likely a different story at the GWS pick). We talked about Windsor and when we developed an interest (noting the media only tied him to us relatively late). Lamby didn't know how it got out to the media (!), but said that Jase Taylor was a fan of Windsor coming into the year and we probably landed on him (a lot) earlier in the process than when we were eventually linked. Spoke to Pert afterward, and on the new facilities, he is excited about the possibility of having 3 ovals (2 at Caulfield) for our various AFL & VFL sides to have access to. With the introduction of the VFLW & AFLW, maintenance of ovals has become a challenge, so (exclusive) access to three ovals would be terrific for players across the 4 teams. Whilst the announcement was for a feasibility study, Pert did say a lot of work has already been done and that we're a significant way down the track. Reading between the lines, the study is a tick, but we may be closer to really locking in the facility than we have been. That the location would be in traditional Demon heartland was a point of pride.3 points
