  1. The other element Mahoney mentioned was that with Hannan & VandenBerg in, both haven't got a lot of miles in the legs after their injuries, and the coaching team didn't want to carry (for want of a better word) Bennell, who at this point would only be expected to see 60% of game time (FWIW I did have a similar concern going into the Bombers game when Bennell & VandenBerg were both selected). On Weideman, Mahoney said he's going ok, but they (coaching panel I assume) wanted to have a look at the forward line structure with just the one tall for a period of time. Sam will be right in contention when they decide they want to switch to two talls. I think we are going to see a fair amount of experimentation with the side for a block of the season before we settle into a team and game style.

  2. I don't mind the Jetta omission. Its bold, and at least Goodwin isn't just playing him just because of his outstanding service. See Jones as well. Jetta is one of my all time faves ( note my avatar) but unfortunately he hasn't had form since 2018, and this year he just looks slow and is clearly out of form. From all reports Lockhart has absolutely been banging the door down, so he deserves his opportunity. Looking forward to Pickett play!

  3. https://www.sen.com.au/news/2020/06/26/report-bombers-saad-far-apart-on-contract-discussions/ Out of contract and no close to a new deal by the looks of it. He is everything that we are screaming out for. Dash from half back with clean kicking skills. Happy to give up our 2nd rounder.

  4. Lol, best part of the game was the camera work on Townsend’s shot. Just showing the ball in flight and teasing Ess fans with the accurate kick thinking it was through. Touched an inch out, great theatre.

  5. He played the intraclub. The intraclub was the same effort as the Essendon game. Seriously, how hard is this to understand?

  6. Essendon are notoriously hard to deal with. They'd want Petracca.

  7. According to Mahoney about 5 minutes ago (Zoom call). Jetta down on form and he acknowledges that himself. Hibberd coming in allows Harmes to get back into the midfield mix. Oh and Bennell... he said they want to work him back into it slowly. He was never going to playing every game this season. They want him to be a long term player and so he will be in for a couple then out for a lower intensity match in between, such as with this week in the scratch match.

  9. We know he isn’t match fit. He played 50% of the first game he has played since leaving Freo and seemingly heading to retirement. They have got him back and we have to trust they know how to get the most out of him and keep his career going.

  10. Hear me out here... Brayshaw for Saad, Harmes back to the midfield. To me, that makes us a better team.

  13. It is a good side picked and we can go in with confidence with more than a healthy list to pick from. It will be about team balance. With Hibberd, Vanders and Hannan it gives us a hard edge and with Kossi and Lockhart our future, they are certainly red hot goers. All good inclusions which makes the team very solid . It is a good start and now we have to make it happen.

  14. I checked the scores and found the Blues hanging iron with moments to go, so I turned it on. Watch very little footy this season, but seeing the Bummers stuff up on the death knell despite a pretty strange 50 gave me a rare moment of footy joy. Blues have I believed had a 1 point loss and two 1 point wins in three rounds . Heart stopping for their fans.

  19. I'm pretty much in the same boat as a lot of others here, Hours cut to 30 a week and several layoffs, several expenses including rego coming up. I think I have to do this, I am most likely going to regret that but I guess I'm going out as much or spending as much as I used to (After all I'm sitting on DL at 1am on Sat morning). I know there are plenty of people here in worse positions who would kill to donate right now. Make no mistake what I contribute is as much for you as it is for me.

  22. Hannan and AVB take a decient mark. To me the selection of the two above when we have an almost fully fit list to pick from is a good sign that they are cherry ripe and will have an impact. My view is that people are writing of Hannan as not much of a player based on his 2019 performances when he was rushed back from injury out of desperation when we were struggling just for numbers to feild a side. When he is on his game, Hannan has a lot to offer in his aerial marking skills, opportunistic instincts around goal as well as pleanty of pace up the ground. Add that to a forward line that already contains Freitch, Hunt, Kosi and I think that in itself provides a forward line which will be hard to match up on all at once. I don't think it's beyond T Mac or Melksham to find some form at some point either - both quality players.

  24. It may not be the reason, but the coaches may still see it affecting his game. It amazes me how people like yourself and Mental just dismiss it as something along the lines of a “harden up princess” scenario.

  25. It IS about football! It is about the fact the indigenous footballers are still subjected to racist attacks and is no less worthy of discussion than any other football related topic. We just saw Eddie Betts commenting on the recent attack against him, to the effect that he’s had enough and it’s affecting his enjoyment of the game. I would not be surprised if the fact Nev is not in tomorrow’s team has something to do with the attack on him and about him having time out to clear his own mind and have time with his family who would also have been affected. This is a subject that should not be consigned to the General Discussion forum where it would sit gathering cobwebs. You don’t need to read it if you find it too confronting (the topic’s subject is made clear in the title and in no way ambiguous). Just move on to the next topic that interests you... easy!

  27. Wasn't referring to you Rjay, I expect he will be managed and 50% game time is a gamble if you lose players through injury and have younger players in the side

  28. Probably not the thread to post this in but when was the last time a Dees debutant played as well as Rivers did against Carlton. I thought he was exceptional - so poised, hard and skilful. A great prospect! Bloody excited to watch him and Kossie tomorrow

  29. Article from the Guardian written by Lumumba well argued and worth a read 'On Monday I was notified that Collingwood would be conducting an “internal investigation” into my claims, in order to discover the “truth”. Many are wondering why I will not participate in this process. It is an insult to suggest that I have done anything less than tell the “truth” for the last six years. I have expressed this truth directly to the AFL via board members of Collingwood and the Melbourne Football Club, administrators and players at both clubs, the AFL Players’ Association, AFL club-affiliated psychologists and psychiatrists, and the Australian public via a feature-length documentary and interviews with almost every major media outlet in the country. I have no desire to sit down with the same organisation who have worked to publicly discredit my truth, so that they can decide on its value." https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/jun/25/i-foundracism-runs-through-the-afl-it-has-failed-to-uphold-the-rights-and-safety-of-black-players

  32. Whoever we select, just get to round 10 with 5 wins, and anything could happen this season! The clubs that manage their playing List best will have a real crack at going a long way in the finals! TMac 3rd last match against Carlton he kicked 6 goals! The break in the start of the season, opening round in Perth, then 12?weeks off, game postponed last week, will take some time for us to be cohesive. Just need to wait 5-6 weeks to see how we settle, hopefully we can stay at least 50/50 re win loss and then come home strongly!

  34. Eddie is a boofhead, as you say, But, he's/been a leader on the pedestal of TV and Radio. What he says people react to. for good or bad decisions. his love of the power, and his abuse of that power, is what condemns him. He is for Eddie, 1st 2nd 3rd. and he lps things, that helps himself. Really Bif. Does one have to be an absolute gent to be someone of note. Or does/did a protestor against the Vietnam War count .? civilised +/-... I agree behaviour have declined... I generally agree. Sticks and Stones" was the way I was brought up... So was I, and it hurt, bad. And so I thought i was weak, but I was just sensitive. The issue here is; those 'less-sensitive' use the power they have over sensitive souls, to belittle them and to oppress them. That's the outcome. As well as anxiety and depression. emotional strength... Is a fallacy, its just being unemotional, blocking the emotions; such as soldiers. At what cost.? The generation younger than me are far more sensitive to words... Not really. but I can see what you say. IMV, its more that they are more liberated to think more individually, rather than group mentality, or Pack mentality, like say dogs, or armies. So they don't have to follow the "expected" roles of yesteryear.

  35. we would be better off avoiding any trade .We don't do that at all well .we would just end up on the wrong side of the balance sheet .The list is good enough already to perform well .

  36. In my opinion Tmac and Brayshaw are given more chances when form is shaky because if they hit form their value to the side is significant. Also what is the potential impact of the player that is missing out. I think I heard someone mention Ben Matthews state that Angus was the best performed mid in the intra last week. Hopefully this starts to translate into this week against the cats.

  37. Not sure i am in the same boat with this statement. Dropping Neville Jetta, Nathan Jones and Michael Hibbered shows he's now not afraid to drop big name players that don't perform. It's been well documented that Goodwin is quite close to these 3 players as well, so I don't think there is favouritism at all. I think Goodwin is also about giving players a fair go as well. Yes ANB was dropped after that one game, but to be honest he hasn't performed since 2018. Same as Oscar Mac. I think he's just lost patience with the likes of those two as he's shown to give them a real decent opportunity and yet they haven't performed up to standard. Its no coincidence they're on the outer now. Tom McDonald is really on thin line imo. Put up another stinker against the Cats and I reckon Weid or Brown will take his spot.

  38. I'm no Waleed Aly apologist, frankly I think the guy's a bit of a self-important [censored], but there's a big difference between putting forward a political standpoint, and outright, blatant racism JUST DAYS after Eddie goes up to Goodes and shaking the blokes hand telling him it's not on what happened to him. Eddie makes some big statements almost weekly that have him up the top of tool of the week nominations, but they are mostly self-serving and ego driven. This was making a mockery of a guy who had been devastated by being called an ape by a young girl of the club he's the President of, Darcy was teeing it up to tell him to shut the F up but Eddie is still of the boys club mentality where if "it's all in a bit of fun" it's fine to say anything he wants. He's also been offensive towards women, and while Sam Newman on the Footy Show has been the one doing the disgusting acts such as mocking Nicky Winmar with the blackfacing, Eddie was one of the leading voices behind the show and he never stopped him. TV/Radio channels can decide what kind of values they stand for by who they employ to be their talent, and advertisers can decide what kind of people they want to be connected to their products by paying for air time during those shows. So you ask who arbitrates the cancelling? They do by deciding what kind of people they want representing them. Since you bring up the domestic violence side of things, much like racism it's a cultural and generational change. No not all men are responsible when a woman dies from domestic violence, but there's no doubt that I think as men we need to more accountable for what we say around our friends and likewise what they say. If a mate of mine wants to make a flippant comment about doing something disrespectful or abusive towards their wife/gf/partner I'm going to call him out on it because I think it's our responsibility to push things in the right direction. I usually try not to do big long social topic posts, but I think Eddie has got away with a lot in the past. Maybe Lumumba is a bit of it catching up with him.

  41. This thread has turned into a bit of a minefield so I'll try and tread carefully. It shouldn't need to be said but I don't think it's for us white folks to decide the parameters of what is and isn't racist behaviour. That hasn't stopped plenty trying of course. We can definitely play our part though by supporting initiatives aimed at educating or calling out those that are clearly struggling to come to terms with 21st century norms. Political leaders around the world looking for scapegoats for their failed agendas aren't helping unfortunately.

  42. Jeez 'Ethan' you're a proactive one in being provocative towards this bloke aren't you. I'd question whether you want to make the thread about yourself? Sure @Satyriconhome is verbose, sure @Satyriconhome backs the club no matter what, sure @Satyriconhome is solid in his opinions, but there is nothing worse than some entity constantly hounding a guy on and on and on and on.

  43. You can't tell people who have suffered decades of persecution for their race, ethnicity, gender or religious beliefs to just 'get over it'. Getting over it implies that the people being targeted are the ones in the wrong. They are not. Would you tell a holocaust survivor to 'get over it and move on'? How about a rape victim? A family who lost a child? A war veteran with PTSD? It is not up to us to decide when someone should get over it. It is up to us to ensure there is nothing to get over by stamping out and calling out pathetic racist behaviour.
    3 points
  44. Get over it? How many times in his life do you think Neville has been expected to 'get over it'? Those micro-aggressions add up. The 'get over it attitude' makes it the problem of the target. It is not Neville Jetta, Eddie Betts or Adam Goodes job to 'get over' cheap shots from racists. It's our job to be a better football community.

  45. I've reported people name calling people of Asian decent "ching chongs" to Facebook before and all the weak [censored] did was hide the post from me - pathetic. Then there is the rubbish claim that these social media behemoths that make billions off advertising revenue, undermine legitimate media (whom are held far more accountable to standards of conduct and legal responsibility for their publications) cannot afford to or can not practically police racism on their platform. Racism exists and thrives on social media, precisely because it is tolerated and people can hide behind anonymity. This enables and encourages racism within society in general. FU Facebook, Twitter etc.
