  1. Eddie looking ridiculous and losing his cool. Was a very straightforward and simple question. Of course Eddie knew the answer and dodged it like there was no tomorrow (which could be a reality for some clubs). For all the criticisms people might have of Pert, I'm glad he doesn't carry on like Eddie

  2. At that game and visibly recall the Fidge- Millane 'incident' to this day. Ted rather publicly and mistakenly retaliated to sly whack from Millane, during the play, with a powerful right cross to the head. Millane was dazed, confused and on very rubbery legs. So much for the faux tough image, Millane attempted to project on the footy field. Unfortunately for Ted, Swooper massively disapproved, it was Ted's last senior appearance and he was delisted at seasons end. The match itself? After an three goal opening burst by the Magpies, a fabulous Brian Wilson lead recovery by the Demons, who stormed back to secure a memorable victory.

  6. The only ones pushing for mergers will be the non-Vic clubs - they will want to shift the balance of power outside Victoria so they can drive their agendas such as moving the Grand Final away from the MCG NB - we clearly CAN support 10 teams in Melbourne, we have been doing so for almost 100 years. If the AFL didn't hamstring clubs with biased fixturing and stadium deals or implemented a revenue sharing arrangement like exists in competitions such as the NFL clubs would easily be able to stand on their own. The AFL looks after the AFL's bottom line at the expense of the clubs. Clubs should be pocketing the majority of AFL revenue however when the AFL hands out a million dollars here or there they act as if they are doing the clubs a favour! They should never have been withholding that money in the first place.

  7. Sadly, all of the round 1 games will be etched into history. So, unfortunately Spargo's 7 clangers will remain. I like your idea otherwise, but would assume the AFL would be keen to stick to the 17 game plan that was announced prior to round 1. If I was to take a stab in the dark, I reckon it will be a September - November home and away season spanning 13 weekends with 3 mid week games per club, in order to get the remaining 16 games in. Then December finals.

  10. The only reason the 2012 brownlow was tainted was the disgraceful conduct of Lloyd's club.

  11. Jeff Hilton was one of my favorites 'had potential' type players for a bit and was good for a bit of bash, crash and snagging a sneaky goal here or there. He had games where he would really turn it on, get off the chain and play like a champion.

  14. I worked with this guy at the Dept of Veterans’ Affairs in the 70’s. A really lovely guy and an excellent payer when he bothered to turn up. Colin Graham (1975-78, 35 matches, 32 goals) Graham played 20 of his 35 matches with Melbourne in 1977 and was rewarded with 13 Brownlow Medal votes (one of the two seasons when both field umpires awarded votes on a 3-2-1 basis). He also kicked 20 goals in 1977. A left-footer with a long kick.

  15. A friend of mine met Alan Rowarth in Apollo Bay. My friend, an Esse’don fan in his seventies, didn’t remember him , but found out he played in 2 premierships for Melbourne. I remember him well, number 2, a shortish dark haired left footer, who played”decoy” full forward. He’d lead out, leaving the forward line open for Big Bob Johnson. It was a role Athol Webb played before him. But he got plenty of goals himself, being an accurate kick for goal. He was originally from Birregurra, but we picked him up from Castlemaine( where we got Barassi from, he informed my friend) .

  16. I liked Nathan Carroll. He was undersized and fought like hell against the big forwards. HE was also a legitimate Dumbass off the field. What's not to love?

  17. With Toby Bedford and Kozzzzzzy Pickett having an exciting round 1, I was thinking back at some of our past indigenous players. Some were super talents and super exciting but had their careers cut by injuries, home sickness or other personal reasons. Here is my top 10 1- Jeff Farmer 2- Aaron Davey 3- Nev Jetta 4- Andy Lovell 5- Liam Jurrah 5- Matthew Whelan 6- Colin Graham 7- Byron Pickett 8- Sean Charles 9- Jeff Garlett 10- Austin Wonamieri

  19. Out of curiosity, does anyone have any firm numbers on how many Fitzroy supporters were lost to the game after their merger? I can't imagine being nearly as interested in the game if the Dees were pushed into a merger.

  21. You need to explain how relocating/merging or killing off any clubs is going to lead to a better bottom line. In the 80s/90s I could see the argument. But these days with the size of the tv rights contracts that rely just as much on volume of games as quality and with each Victorian club having a minimum of 35k paying members (most at least 40k) the financial argument to get rid of Vic clubs does not make sense. Ifyou merge 2 Vic clubs with 40k members each you're not going to all of a sudden have a club with 80k - a lot of those supporters will be lost to footy.

  22. Agreed Mergers would never work in Victoria ... 95% of the supporters care way more about their team than they do the game itself. Merging 2 teams within Victoria would be like merging the White Sox & Cubs, Yankees & Mets, City & United or the Reds with the Toffees. Or Freo & the Eagles. Anytime there is a match-up between 2 Victorian teams there's often over 140 years of history between those 2 clubs. 1877 is a better starting point rather than 1897. 200+ games to boot (each match-up) It wouldn't work and the new entities would probably have less supporters & members. Most would rather see their team die than merge. Footy is all about the passion, the colours, the theme song, the jumper and history and past greats. And not many care about the money either ... we just want our teams to win.

  23. Respect your right to have an opinion, but mergers won't work in Victoria, teams are either in or out in their current guise.

  24. Should have been the premiership HB line but Leahy was injured and replaced by Frank Davis, a future captain. Tony Anderson nearly caught Gabbo in the goal square.

  25. With respect you are completely wrong - watch this space. Also read Goyder’s letter 18 clubs going in 18 clubs coming out. Talk of mergers is 1990s type hyperbole. We are more likely to end up with 20 or 22 clubs than less Why? Media rights and the fixture. Watch this space yep heard about mergers since the 1990s

  27. I like it. I reckon there is chance they could commence a season by mid August (allowing for 3-4 week mini preseason prior to that). This is based on my guess/prediction social distancing restrictions will be eased by end of July. Play to end November. A conference system would make that window of time feasible whilst cutting down on travel costs. An i reckon there woul dbe massive interest and the winner would still be regarded as a legitimate premier. No asterisk. In some ways the winner might be lauded given the hurdles all teams will have had o overcome (so perhaps a positive asterix!) Mark my words they will play a season this year. We wil collectively get though this time and the AFL will need to play games to stay financially viable. Same goes for clubs like the dees.

  30. You make some good points. This is not one of them. I doubt the GCS would survive if there was a rationalisation of the competition. Also there is no space for GWS. They might be successful on the ground but after that drops off they will be an empty shell...

  31. I like the idea to assist the shortened season however I just can’t see life getting back into a semblance of normal to facilitate footy resuming to fit in enough games.

  32. Life poor kicking skills were known before we recruited him. But for some reason we don't spend the summer focussing on that skill. We don't seem to have a minimum benchmark for kicking skills that we set for players, for field kicking. He wasn't the only one on the day, I can't believe how many kicks went over our players heads when passing, even when not under pressure. Simply poor skills.

  33. Happy we are aligning with Casey, it has been beneficial for us. For a home base, we'll see what happens. The situation has changed for everyone, at least in the short term. As for other sports, the AFL is in the most secure position of all the national football codes. The other codes were already struggling and don't have the future financial ability to gain lines of credit to tide it over. Happy we are aligning with Casey, it has been beneficial for us. 34. The Eagles were playing at home...a quick drive from the ground and they're back safe with family. Everything was falling apart around the country, state borders were being closed off and our playing group were stuck in Perth playing a meaningless game. They're not robots...I was upset with the performance on game day but after settling down and having a bit of empathy for the group I realised we could not judge much if anything from that game...

  35. Not sure that's right. Jones said they haven't had the chance to review it - the players flew home and went straight home, with no next-day recovery session and since they haven't been back to the club since, there's been no chance to review.

  36. Suddenly from being behind re no dedicated melbourne vfl team we're back in front on that score. On similar matters, as football depts shrink will AAMI actually work out ok for us now....OR given everything is being reduced everywhere could we get back to training on the mcg? OR is thinking about the future in any way right an utter waste of time?

  40. Just so much footballing talent in this list - very difficult to rank them but pretty well done as it stands. Boy, do we miss some of this footballing intent and team value. We should make a priority of these types of natural footballing talents in our recruitment processes - a very high percentage of skilful attributes contained in each. How good it is to reflect on these players and the games that each of them has played for the mighty MFC.

  41. Take your pick of any 3 for the current team and why. Farmer - Freakish scoring power and marking ability. Davey - Invented the manic defensive pressure for small forwards, and loved a goal. Jurrah - Shocking defensively and terrified of physical contact, but an absolute offensive weapon who would benefit from our current bomb it long inside 50s Hard done by. Matty Whelen - yesteryears Nev Jetta. Fantastic small defender who was great 1 on 1 and tough as nails.

  42. I know I have posted on this technique before, but the Indian squat makes toilet paper redundant. How do you think I coped during the Italian and Spanish Civil Wars, let alone on my hunting and fishing exploits. Clean, hygienic and efficient. And forget the gym. Its a great way to strengthen your quads, improve core strength and lower back, and for old guys like myself, improves balance out of sight. The other benefits include fertilizing your veggie patch, pot plants and roses. Garden paths, front porches, outside the backdoor and driveways should be avoided. . Close to the fence of unpleasant neighbours, preferably close to a back door or open window is therapeutic for controlling anger and mood.

  44. We can all just cut and paste our comments from last season because based on our first and possibly only match of 2020 it’s exactly the same crap. I have no confidence that if we have another preseason with Goody anything will change. Either the players aren’t listening OR the coach is not getting through to the players.
