It's maudlin, but it's true. If this kicks off like it has in Europe, this will be the last season of footy for some DeeLanders. Forced retirement, not 4 to 6. I'm not quite sure what we can do to look after each other; we share a love for this Club and have endured together through so much [censored]. I saw a flag in '64, but I'm not sure my son will. It might just be worth checking in on each other once in a while. If you get crook, you might like to let DL know. We are, as they say, all in this together, and the odd (queue @Bitter but optimistic) message might lift the spirits. This isn't a drill. Stay safe. Stay at home. Go Dees.19 points

Quality thread idea. So my flight to Bangkok got cancelled. I was due to go there on April 6 to my wifes home in rural Thailand. We have been married for 7 years, but i havent seen her since early July last year. Now it looks like its going to be somewhere around 18 months by the time i see her again face to face. Sent emails today to Thai Airways and also for the internal flights airline in the hope of a refund. Cant cancel my leave as the roster is already full. Cant fly to the Brothers place in QLD either as i would be lucky to get there, and almost certain not to get a flight home.. My gym is now closed so i cant go there either. So i called work and told them i am happy to cover any shifts i can during my annual leave if our nurses need extra time off to care for their kids who now have no school to attend. There WILL be some who have to take extra time off now that School isnt an option for the ruggies. Easy to feel sorry for myself, and i did have my moments. Then i remember that my job as a Nurse makes me safe from the threat of job loss. I am even in the position that i could tell my daughter not to worry herself sick about losing her job at Bunnings as i can cover her mortgage until she gets some income. Sure, im also in an industry where my risk of catching "The bug" is fairly high, and i do have a health condition that makes my risk of death from it almost 15%, but hey, it could be much worse. As long as i dont infect my 79-80 Yo. parents with something i bought home from work, it should be ok. Will feel pretty rubbish if i bring home the bug that kills them. So yeah, its crap that i cant see the Wife for ages. What can you do. I feel a lot less sorry for myself when i see the lines at Centerlink on todays news.So many people losing their jobs with 10's or even 100's of thousands of others still to lose theirs. Be nice to your neighbors and dont abuse the poor checkout chick for the 1 pack pasta limit. Its not her fault. Stay classy and look after each other in whatever way you can.9 points

I had started a very similar thread the other day. And then didn't hit send for whatever reason. I'm not okay right now. A million difficult things are all converging at once. So please ignore any bizarre posts or tetchy responses etc. I will be okay though. And I'm all ears for whoever wants to chat. Probably better at dealing with other peoples issues than my own. It at least provides a distraction. But I will also be open and frank in regards to myself. For better or worse, this is the community I'm probably most actively involved with. Best wishes to everyone, Ronnie.9 points

Whist punished myself and watched the first quarter again, as it’s currently on fOx Footy. We dominated the first 13 minutes. With 3 minutes left in the first quarter, the score was 4 behinds to 1.1.7. T Mac gives away a dumb 50 and the momentum swings. Max allows Nic Nat to take one out of the ruck and they score an easy out the back goal. We go inside fifty after a run of 3 Eagles goals and Fritsch offers a lead wide and Petracca misses the hit up, ball turned over from throw in and it’s up the other end. He should have kicked the goal and Fritsch should learn to lead to the middle, where we had crumbers and numbers. They kick a fluke goal and it’s suddenly 31 to to 4. The eventual losing margin. We matched them for the remaining 3 quarters, but our errant kicking and failure to execute passes inside 50 remain our biggest issue.8 points

10 days ago I got married and it was the best day of my life. Today my husband and I were making decisions on if, and how, we can keep our business going and our employees (and ourselves) in work. It has been a truly awful few days and sadly I think things are going to get much worse before they get better. To have lost the escapism of footy on top of it all is just a final kick in the guts. I hope everyone here is doing the right thing, distancing as much as possible, staying safe, looking after themselves and their families. When this week is over and there is no footy on, do something for yourself. Go sit under a tree. Read. Drink. Have a bath. Do anything that for a minute makes you remember what it’s like to live in a normal world. This too shall pass and hopefully the world comes out of this having learnt a lot and made some serious changes to way we all live. At least our environment is finally benefiting for all of us sitting indoors for a bit. This is mother nature’s holiday.7 points

Well played LN, I'm happy to throw in a few expletives just to get the crowd on the edge. Unfortunately I will be signing out of here for a while now while footy is off limits. I have too much going on in my personal life that's taking a real toll on me, and i need to now focus on my young family and extended who are battling right at this minute. Let's all try and be kind to each other, the world is in pain right now and we need to do the right thing and take care of our love ones. To many who I have had heated exchange over the journey, i do apologise, especially you @Satyriconhome you crazy old ba stard ? don't take it personally, we're all passionate about the greatest team ever. Much love demonland family, see you all when the footy starts!7 points

Given the late flight, change in hotel, suspension of the competition just before the game, rumours of difficulty getting home, more inside 50 entries, playing a WCE at home and at full strength, poor disposal and terrible form of most of the team and then only losing by 27 points, I am not too critical of the result.7 points

Agree. As many of you would know I am not a fan of ANB and banned my self from bagging him on here. However the above post is correct, credit where credit is due. I thought ANB was one of few contributors for the Dees and worked hard to lay tackles and gain possession. I thought it was one of his better games in adverse conditions, so well done son, make me eat my words and keep improving.6 points

I just caught myself thinking of our odd little community as being like the people you've been sitting in the same seats near for years. Don't even have to like each other, might often be annoyed by our manners or vehemently disagree on something, but still, there's a certain sense of shared experience and humanity. Everyone look after yourselves and each other. The virus is an awful thing but you can shunt the odds a bit in your favour, and a bit in society's favour, by doing all the little things. 1%ers, n'all that jazz. Take care everyone, gotta be fresh for when the season restarts, and plenty more seasons to come.6 points

It's hard to know what impact the announcement of the season suspension had on the players. There's a significant degree of uncertainty about what happens next: staff members at the club may lose their jobs, financial position is unclear. I don't think it's fair to say that the players should have been able to put it all behind them and perform at the top of their games. Having said that, there were some extraordinarily disappointing signs that have me more worried than I want to be. The kicking inside 50 looked exactly like 2019. Exactly. Hibberd, Viney, Gawn, Oliver and Brayshaw (all "leaders" to certain extents) were guilty of lazy, thoughtless, up and under bombs. If this is what Hibberd is going to produce in whatever's left of 2020, I don't want it. Langdon's positives are important: his two-way running and link-up down the wing is critical to us improving. But he joins the aforementioned players in being an appalling kick inside 50. Still too many turnovers. 15m kicks under no pressure missing targets. Handballs to the opposition or to our feet. Dropped marks. Fumbles. Missed tackles. I don't know how critical to be of the forwards: TMac kicked 2 but was nowhere for most of the game, Brown was woeful, Melksham largely ineffectual. The commentary on Fox suggested that at times TMac and Brown were leading to the ball carrier but being ignored, so I suspect part of their struggles was the poor delivery. The defensive unit held up well I thought. Credit to Oscar, Lever and May for working together well to quell their tall forwards. Loved what I saw of Pickett, Viney's game (inside 50 kicking aside) was excellent, Brayshaw got better as it went on, Bedford got involved in the fourth. Otherwise, incredibly disappointing.6 points

Great thread and thanks to those who have shared a little of their personal stories through this unprecedented time. I’ve had a lot of time at home over the last two weeks. No, I don’t have corona, but I am a school teacher and our school did have a parent test positive, hence the shutdown. I feel fortunate to be in a line of work that is relatively protected from what is going on. We have had to make huge adjustments to our pedagogy and systems we use to deliver content, but that’s insignificant when I read the hardships of others. Demonland is a part of my daily life. Between classes I log on to post and read. As others have said, I don’t know any of you personally, but this is a community and one that I feel a sense of connection to, more than ever before. I know there are many on here like me that have footy as a enduring constant in their life. It’s part of the weekly routine. The highs and lows. The memories of 87. The visual that is conjured when you hear the phrase “Still Woewodin, Still Woewodin”. Footy is a massive part of our life and it’s gonna leave a massive void. I worry for the future of our club and wonder if we will ever go to a game at the G again. Sit near the same people we have seen alongside us for years. Urgh... it’s depressing. This is bigger than footy and so many people are in uncharted waters right now. I’ve had friends lose small businesses over night. Mates laid off. Friends cancel weddings. Footy, in comparison, seems insignificant. But, the reality is, we all love our club and what footy brings us, even when it is shyt. Demonland is a great community and I know we will all support one another through this mess. Please stay safe, healthy and talk up if you are feeling down or alone. We will get this through this.5 points

Wonder if we could have a 'Demonland Classic Games - Recalled'. YouTube a classic MFC game and have some of the resident personalities do the commentary? I'm imagining WhisperingJack giving an indepth pre-game analysis, DeeSpencer not taking a breath while talking tactics for 12 minutes straight, SWYL and OldDee calling the 64 flag with those voices of the nasal olden style voiceover guys, GeorgeOnTheOuter telling everyone to straighten up and get the commentary back on track, DazzleDavey getting in about 4 words out of every 20 past the censors etc etc.5 points

I want to be angry and annoyed about this game, but in the grand scheme of things it’s so insignificant. I have nothing left in the tank to allocate the MFC right now. In many ways I’m happy this season is on hold.5 points

Well said, Frankie. Weird as we are, we're a mob. And like Moonshadow said, stay home. Physical isolation doesn't have to mean social isolation. And tell the bludgers you see out there to keep their distance. My wife is a nurse in an Emergency Department - we were rapt to see they've closed the pubs and clubs - they're putting her life at risk just so they can get smashed.4 points

I thought Lockhart was excellent. So much cleaner for the most part, than the majority of his team mates. Kozzy is going to be a ripper and Viney stepped up and showed leadership. But Goodwin bangs on about system and you could see it up on the coaching board at one stage. "Protect the corridor", yet almost immediately after that restart, West Coast kicked to a practically unmarked West Coast player standing... in the corridor, who proceeded to then move it through... the corridor. Absolutely, the players have to shoulder much of the blame for not being able to perform their roles, but the coaching staff and the senior coach need to shoulder some of the blame too for not getting the players up. West Coast players had to deal with the strange circumstances too and they did. Weird day I know, but it was another embarrassing performance. It may not have been a 10 goal pounding, but West Coast were in cruise control most of the day and as others have said, this game mirrored most of our performances in 2019. Very disappointing.4 points

Not making excuses, but both teams looked to me to be running at half rat power. Don't get me wrong, I would've loved a win. However I'm not sure we should lose our collective na-na about the result given the players knew they were effectively playing a dead rubber. Lots of players from both sides were walking around trying little and chatting to their opponent. There are concerns about our i50 entries, but not exactly sure that one game reflects where we are at. Not saying it isn't, just that it was a nothing game. I can't see the season starting up again at all this year. I suspect neither can the players. The outraged on here will disagree, of course. Meh.4 points

Yep. The OMac bashers aren’t big on specific examples this week. Credit where credit’s due - he was very solid yesterday.4 points

Teams keep getting us on the outside. We now have wingers but they can’t kick. We get our hands on the ball a lot but turn it over with blind handballs. We hardly ever kick it to a leading forward and mostly bomb it in , giving the opposition the best chance to defend. Until we fix this up We won’t improve. Never seen a team work so hard to get the ball and then just waste it time and time again.4 points

Yes please stay safe each and every one of you? If your feeling alone or down, come on here and talk to us, plesae know we are in this togther and we will get through this togther? People potting OMac clearly went into the match with a pre-conceived idea and outcome. He played well today against one of the best 2 pronged forward lines in the competition. Not a star, but was very solid down back today. Lockhart was great - he can hopefully play the whole season down back this year. Kossie - he has 'IT'; a quality that we haven't had at the club for a longtime. No matter what happens with the draft this year, we made the right choice trading into the first round with North - he's gonna be a player. Bedford - great pace and pressure. Not completely convinced, but showed that he could be a contributor. May - didn't stand out with the ball in hand, but blanketed Kennedy, and that hasn't happened very often before. Viney - responded brilliantly. Captaincy aside, he is playing like he was before his injury. He's completed a pre-season and now he's showing us the form and ability that won him the Best and Fairest and the captaincy in the first place.4 points

They got told 30 mins before the game the season was on hold (but in reality likely finished). They are on the other side of the country in a ghost town (even when not under semi lock down). Talk here on dl that they had to move hotels. They face a 12 hour trip home. They are by and large a bunch of young guys. Agree. Let's cut them some slack.4 points

There's something not quite right about individual States making decisions on close downs etc. These are the decisions that should be made by National governments with regard to local conditions. Barrass, Hurn and McGovern - 21 marks between them. Lever, May and OMc - 10. Obviously this highlights how poor the delivery in to our Forward 50 was (not a newsflash there). If we somehow halve the amount of marks these (Eagles) blokes took, then we have an additional 10 opportunities for our crumbers to do their thing. Then I watch one of the biggest culprits, Langdon, and how many times he appeared to just bang the ball inside 50. He's new to our team. To me, that highlights that the directive in the game plan is to do just that, bang it in long. Goodwin MUST revisit this during the break. Regardless of if we play again this season or next, there has to be an immediate change to that part of the game plan. I called before the game that if we were relying on TMc to do the relief ruck, Hurn et al would have a field day. They did. I also hoped that Melksham would've tagged McGovern, like he did when we beat them over there in 2018. He didn't. I just hope that Weid's ankle was not right, hence why he wasn't named. I've been a Goodwin supporter, but he lost me yesterday.3 points

watching the replay, there was a whiteboard held up at 1/4 time. It talked about forward entries. It had an arrow to a pocket saying 'WIDE ?". As a football coach, that means one of two things: either look for a wide option first, or why were we going wide. A second arrow read 'WHIRPOOL'' and pointed to the centre. This means that either plan B is to go to a hotspot and swarm numbers. Whirlpool is a common term for what is known as 'washing machine' in modern football lingo. It is essentially chaos ball. Neither worked yesterday, due to the fact that when we had numbers central we looked to go wide and had Fritsch covered by 2 and when we went central, we had options out wide. We need Weed or Jackson as a tall for either option to work.3 points

Quote from Fox: “The Dees certainly never lacked for forward entries last year. Against the Eagles, they had 45 of them - 10 more than their opponents. But they still lost by almost five goals. For some reason, Melbourne thought kicking it high and long into West Coast’s vacuum-like intercept defenders time after time would work. Weirdly, it never did, to absolutely no-one’s surprise. It’s fair enough to be frustrated with a team when it doesn’t have enough talent; but when it does, yet keeps doing the same silly things, that’s a different kettle of fish”. So either the players are following orders in continuously bombing it in long - which is an indictment on the coach; or the players are not listening to the coach and doing what they want - which is an indictment on the coach.3 points

I have mixed thoughts about the game. I'm not going to call them excuses but First Game of the Season Against Quality Opposition In the heat New players for the club Perhaps the uncertainty of the season did get to them at times. But at the end of the day as we've said here there were simple mistakes that cost us goals and the same issues what impacted us in 2019. Must improve the delivery into the F50. It was one of those games where the start killed us, They couldn't seem to miss, we couldn't seem to score. Just sad we need to wait a minimum of 10 weeks for more Kozzie Picket3 points

The OMac haters are really standing out today. He did a very good job on Darling, and for the most part looked more confident and proactive. But according to some, he should never play another game and was as good as useless.3 points
-
"I will line up Goodwin though. His setup and lack of pressure on Eagles ball carriers is a structural issue he has implemented and it absolutely stinks. The allowance of opposition sides to simply kick to unmarked players is alarming and unforgivable" this is the unforgiveable part for me also. when the opposition move the ball it should be under great pressure at leat by the idr kick. to oftne it was not.3 points

The two most disappointing aspects for me were: 1) The "sameness" of the loss - has been well covered in this thread. Winning contested ball and inside 50s but poor inside 50 efficiency and kicking for goal has been a regular occurrence in our losses for a number of years. 2) Playing on the Eagles' terms - we know the Eagles win when they take 100+ uncontested marks. Their tall backs chop off opposition entries and then they use the ball by foot to progress up the ground with uncontested marks. The way to beat them is to make it more of a street fight with lots of pressure and accountability and to make it a ground ball game. Yet at no stage did the game look anything like what we needed it to look like. They took 120 marks in a shortened game. We kept kicking sky balls to Barrass, McGovern and Hurn inside 50. We gave them exactly what they wanted. It was a strange old game given the circumstances and maybe that explains a bit. There were some positives (Viney's attack on the footy, Pickett just looks a class footballer, OMac and May kept Darling and JK quiet, Trac was fairly solid) but it was a pretty poor display overall. Once again the effort was decent for most of the game but the execution was sadly lacking.3 points

3-6 months to get a whole lot of development in to our players and to sort out this mess FB: Jetta May Hibberd HB: Brayshaw Lever Tomlinson C; Baker Salem Langdon HF: Petracca Petty Jones FF: Melksham Fritsch Pickett Foll: Gawn Harmes Viney Int: Jackson Lockhart Bedford/Chandler Oliver Out: Brown, T McDonald, Oscar, Spargo, ANB In: Jackson, Petty, Baker, Jones, Salem We need some actual forwards in the forward line. No more Spargo and ANB because they can run. 1 high half forward and make it someone who will get 20 touches and could actually hurt the opposition in Jones. Melksham and Petracca can't interchange on ball, we need them forward so we have multiple dangerous options and can then get Fritsch up the ground as well instead of stationed at full forward defending 2. Time for Petty, he can't be any worse than Brown and McDonald. The midfield needs skill and guys who can run both ways. It's been crying out for years (since Jones and Vince left) for someone who can hit some targets and hurt the opposition. Harmes is messy but he can tuck and run the ball through the lines. Salem has the skills we need to get some decent inside 50's. Baker might not have the fitness for full games rotations can cover him and he has the ability to hurt the opposition with penetrating kicks. We have to start being less reliant on Gawn. Teams know not to kick it up to him these days. Time for him to have less minutes on ball and play forward more in the Cox role of halving contests. Give the crumbers someone to work off. Jackson will be up and down but on his good days the midfield will go to another level having another mobile player and he won't touch it much up forward but he'll at least offer some defensive effort and size that troubles defenders. The backline is a mess. Oscar played well but apart from a couple of nice mark/kicks in uncontested play he provides absolutely no drive and never intercepts. Whenever the ball is near him you just hope he halves the contest or gets the ball to someone in no worse a position. Tomlinson is 195cm of meh. He can do that at half back where hitting targets is easier. Brayshaw can't be a successful midfielder in a side with Oliver and Viney, he'd at least show off his smart reading of the play and get a chance to kick it far better than he does at half back. Might add some urgency to his game too. I still think Hibberd can be of value but it has to be in a more limited role deeper towards goal - make him defend a good forward. He can't be coming up the ground trying to lace inside 50's. Jetta left his man too many times to rush up as well, he has to get discipline in to his game because good teams are always going to open you up on big grounds and you have to let things play out as one on one and have the mids cover off.3 points
