I actually just ran into a mate driving the bus for the Blues women’s team, asked his to start coughing throughout the remainder of the day? My concern is that the AFL have said that the bottom line losses are for the Clubs to absorb. They sit on millions of dollars in their Future Fund and the Clubs have to absorb huge losses which will impact the smaller Clubs already facing huge debts. Will the banks cover back up funding. Richmond, West Coast etc who sit on massive reserves will be able to ride this out virtually unscathed. In my conspiracy AFL world, the Suns and GWS will not suffer but have the advantage of increased funding due to their "special" development needs.

He's one of our better kicks when given time and space, but I wouldn't have him in the top 3. For me, it's Salem, Melksham and Fritsch in the top 3, and while very very early days Rivers seems to have a very nice kick and could easily push into that group. OMac, for all his faults, is also a nice kick. I'd group Jones around the 5-7 range.

This here. People should not get caught up on best player vs value and impact on result. For me its TMac and May by the length of the straight. Without Gawn we would find a way to win. Those two completely change our ability to attack and defend when not at their best or absent. They also could if necessary play at either end.

Indicative for Jones to be seriously considered in the forward line. He has the turn, space seeking and a good boot. Kossie and a few others could learn much playing alongside him as opportunistic smalls when the bigs cannot mark lollipops or long bombs.

The time and space thing is a pretty big key to it I think and it can be a bit like comparing apples with oranges in this respects. My first reaction to Lyon's call was that it was a bit of a stretch, but as I've pondered it further, I think he is pretty close on the money. On Nathan Jones my thoughts are: 1. Early in his career he was a bit of a turnover king, but I think that was more about picking the wrong options, letting players close in on him too much and putting himself under the pump. He prety tidied this up significantly as his career progressed to the point of it becoming a non issue; 2. Being an in and under, on ball type for most of his career, he has nearly always in tight in positions where little time and space exists. However through a combination of physical strength and pretty good evasive skills in tight, he is able to work his way out of tight spots and still get a reasonable kick away to position. I see Trac and to some extent Brayshaw as developing their proficiency in this respects; 3. I've not paid much attention to Jones general feild passing until now, because he's previously been more of that burst kick type, but his skills in this area do seem to be quite good; 4. He is a pretty decent long kick for goal up forward, on the run, snapping or from a set shot. Along similar lines of being a good kick thing need need to be in the context of where on the ground the kick is being taken and the particular attributes of the player. Freitch for example was pretty bog ordanary down back by foot and turned the ball over much more frequently than I would have expected for a player of his generally high skill level. Up forward he has his bearings and sense of where to look for options right and he can be really damaging. Players like Salem and Melksham typically get the ball in more space than Jones has over the journey. Asides from the obvious of Salem and Melksham, a few of the others in probably the next tier below that I'd really rate are May, Harmes, Jetta and to some extent Mitch Hannan and possibly Trac. As others have mentioned, Rivers has the potential to be in the upper eshalon of kicks at the club, but still needs to establish himself at the top level before he can stake a genuine claim in my book.

I honestly can’t see how you could possibly see that conclusion. Ok perhaps we’ve performed well there with hostile crowds before, but to ignore the obvious that the crowd influences not only the WC players but the umpires is baffling. The eagles are usually good for at least 3-4 goals from direct umpire intervention that comes from the hostile crowd. As for the players being flat, we have to trust that the coaching staff will give them the right motivation to get them in game in bizarre circumstances. I would be filthy if I was an Eagles fan as it has nullified a big component of a home ground advantage.

I largely agree with this. There's quite a few points to discuss but as I am a lazy Karmichael when it comes to posting, I'll just deal with one. There's a significant proportion of tackles which would have been penalised as too high or in the back a decade or two ago. Especially when "third man" tacklers get involved. Every game you see blokes getting their heads wrapped up in a tackle but no free given. Penalise bad tackles rather than waiting and effectively making a "safe" non decision and going the ball-up option would remove a lot of the repeat stoppages that mar the game. Repeat stoppages draw more players to the contest area and you end up with a situation closely resembling that stupid game where one man tries to push two men's heads up three men's bums. It's not adding new rules that the game needs, it's just correct application on the existing rules. As an aside I watched some of the 1996 "merger match" the other night (a "classic" game on Kayo). The footy was fast, frantic, skilled, tough and to my mind a far better "product" than what's currently on offer

Interested on other's views on a) the Jones statement and b) who would you rate as say our best 5 - 10 kicks in the team at present?

A lot of similarities to the St Kilda game in that loss. The more dominate side in the first half without putting them away before being completely over run in the second half. Cunningham and Newman have been passengers all year and their performances are magnified in our losses. Newman had a great collect and run into the forward 50 while McEvoy provided an over the top option, she instead took the selfish option and missed. Zanker is our best forward and unfortunately playing ruck with Pearce injured, I'm surprised they didn't swap her with Cunningham. Disappointed by the lack of changes in the last quarter like maybe getting Daisy into the middle in a crucial period, swapping Zanker/Cunningham around, just something to get a spark. Looks like we'll miss finals again, surely Stinear doesn't survive if that eventuates.

Reasonable to assume you can't go the pub to watch it, but otherwise if you weren't going to pay to go you don't really deserve something for free now. Members should all be given special access to codes to watch the streams. That would be the fairest result.

This is the first AFLW game I've been able to sit and watch. Honestly I've found it very entertaining, they go in hard and there's no doubt that the higher skilled players stand out above the rest. Our ball use and pressure has been the difference.

When Jones started out he developed a reputation as a bit of a dodgy kick, but it became apparent around 2010, 2011, 2012 that he had been working hard on his kicking and he had become an excellent kick. It was only last year, when our system fell apart he had no one to kick to, that his kicking again seemed ropey.

Agreed, but I regard Rivers as being just that little bit ahead of Melk, albeit so early in his career; I guess it cannot fully be evaluated yet, as there have not been a heap of shots at goal, static or mobile, from Rivers to fully judge that skillset. Bennell is a candidate if he gets over his current difficulties and plays in the forward line.

not meaning to be a pessimist here but what makes you think this is over and done with in a year? we’re heading into brand new global territory which could well also bring on the mother of all financial collapses. On top of the climate changes arriving it’s getting hard to make firm predictions about what 2021 will look like! hope i’m wrong on that but i get the feeling there is much to play out over the next year and we may not completely recognise ourselves at the end of it.

I just renewed my overseas membership then, obviously my situation means that virus or not it makes no difference to me. I've got to gold level membership thanks to consecutive years of being a member, I really do think the club has the makings of being up there this year and next year so I want to makes sure that if I were to come back I would get those benefits in finals. As for everybody else, I totally understand the difficult decisions people have to make with managing funds. Not everybody has the income at their disposal to pay for a membership and it's quite often combined with the idea that going to home matches balances out the ledger. But to those that are in a position to pay for a membership, our club has (yet again) been caught in some bad luck given that this was a year that was meant to provide us with multiple blockbuster games. If this virus persists and affects our gate return then it will hit the club hard, they've beaten us around with some shocking years (last year was a massive kick to the gonads), memberships will be important to our bottom line.

As far as I’m concerned the only fair thing for everyone (us), would be to cancel the first two rounds and commence the season from round 3.

Seriously? Much more contagious than the flu, x times more fatal and (the key bit) *for which there is neither cure nor vaccine*. And it's not just the elderly. Death rates for people with cardiovascular or respiratory conditions, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and cancer are through the roof. There's also a massive hidden cost which we're starting to see in places like Italy: because ICU's and hospitals are overwhelmed, people with other potentially life-threatening diseases are being shunted to the back of the cue, with a predictable longer-term cost. And that's without even starting on the long-term effects of isolation on mental health and global well-being for those who are already fragile.

Well, I wouldn't want to be travelling anywhere on a plane at the moment. I hope the AFL stump up for charters otherwise it's a stupid decision to start the season this week.

Actually, with the way things are heading due to the virus, I think all clubs are going to need memberships to keep the clubs solvent. Being a member is not just about going to games and the club’s week by week performance, it is also about supporting the club through the bad times as well as the good. Yes, we’ve been bad for decades, but what’s been thrown at us this year is something that we’ve not had to deal with before, and is something that the club has no control over. I’m happy to continue my son’s and my own membership during this time.
