  1. Chicken (real name Wilfred) played 150 games for Fitzroy and won the Brownlow in 1933. He was a tiny 170cm and 62kg and earned his nickname as a child when his mother could never catch him!

  2. I think this thread is about the MFC Captain! Cotchin of the Tigers is now the poster boy for captains, but I can remember during 2016 and midway through 2017 he was hammered for not being a real leader, then miraculously he becomes a great captain! Viney showed great leadership in the 2018 final wins and I can recall a number of other games where he has shown exceptional leadership to drive the team onto wins. It will be great to see him play after a full pre season, rather than going in unprepared and carrying significant injuries. Judge him at the end of hopefully an injury free 2020! Max strikes me as a different kind of leader, but I’m sure if he becomes captain or co-captain, will lead by example and having another terrific season. Jones disappointed me as a leader for one key reason, have hardly see him chase a player over the last two years, maybe it was due to injury, but as a problem MFC has had over a number of years as a team, that really disappointed. I know it’s simplistic but I think of a root cause for one of our problems. The other leadership we lack showed up against Port in the first game last year, with Max being attacked the whole game and getting no support! Also happened in 2018 prelim against the Eagles! I think this is where the likes of May, Lever, and Vandenburgh were really missed in 2019, not sure if Viney played that game, but at some point you need to stand together! Hopefully we show this leadership across the ground in 2020! In my view this is one of the reasons we lose to Collingwood so often, they look like they believe they can just push us around!! So standing up and being counted is what I’m looking for from all our players. Richie Vandenburgh led the Hawks to change their mentality particularly against the Bombers, to go from victims to the aggressors! Then onto Being a great team. Leadership starts at the top, but it’s up to all the players to step up. Go Demons in 2020!

  7. And we have a winner in the tipping competition - JV7 breaks through for his first win. Well played JV and fully deserved! You regained the lead after often leading earlier in the season and then sprinted away in the home stretch - too good! And well played to all the participants - the comp keeps the thread ticking over if our teams fall by the wayside and acts as a way of maintaining interest if there isn't a lot to talk about. I will post up the 'Hall of Fame' records directly. But to the victor go the spoils JV7: 2019 NFL Leading Tipster Final Scores in the Tipping Comp 16 - @JV7 13 - @Go the Biff, @Macca 12 - @Gorgoroth, @Dee Zephyr, @Clintosaurus 10 - @layzie 8 - @Dappa Dan 4 - @DeeSpencer

  8. Funny you should mention Bruce Andrew. I am in possession of a small booklet called "Australian Football Handbook". Its author is Bruce Andrew, Secretary of the Australian National Football Council. Dunno how old it is (as it doesn't have a print date), but the types of kicks that Bruce lists might give some clue to its age. The kicks listed are as follows: The Drop Kick, The Stab Kick, The Punt Kick, The Torpedo Punt Kick, and (I kid you not!!), The PLACE KICK!! LOL Bruce begins the section on this kick by saying "This is the most accurate kick of all -- especially when there is a head or cross wind blowing. It is favoured by some forwards when kicking for goal." (The last VFL player to kick a goal using the Place Kick was Tony Ongarello in 1955!!) And, no, no mention of the drop punt! Ah, nostalgia! (It aint what it used to be...! LOL)

  9. Jeff White was a very good ruckman but he had hard hands and was a woeful pack mark, it was his greatest weakness and Max kills him in this aspect. Sure Jeff could occasionally use his great leap and soar up for a chest mark on someone's shoulders. Credit where it's due, he was a great kick, particularly for a ruckman.

  10. He will. And when he comes out he’ll roundhouse kick the doctor. Nobody delivers baby Viney except baby Viney.

  11. He proved himself in late 2018 with minimal preparation played 7 games 3 of them in the finals and held his own. He is ready to go in 2020 and is like a new recruit. Hard at the man and ball midfielder that can play forward and hopefully the injuries are behind him. A 37 game veteran that plays like a 200 gamer.

  13. Rivers will have to displace either Harmes, Salem or Hibberd, all of whom are fit and firing, he also has to show he is better that Josh Wagner and Marty Hore as a replacement shoukd one of those 3 go down If you listen to Jason Taylor, he said Rivers will grow into a decent size, I expect him to start at Casey and see how he goes at VFL level Goodwin, if he has the choice, prefers it this way Dunkkey is one of the few natural footballers we have on the list, could see him being used as a high half forward in pre season games as an alternative

  15. His methodology is to rank Mids, Backs, Forwards & rucks. Top ranked gets 18 points worst gets 1. Add the all up to get overall ranking. His rankings for us Mids 8th Backs 13th Forwards 14th. Ruck 2nd. Add them up and get 39pts equal with Dogs at 7th, Fun exercise to do our own rankings. Our midfield ranked 8th for clearances and 5th for i50's this season. We know how many were effected by bad preseasons. Add a newly fit Petracca, AVB Langdon & Tomlinson to that midfield. I rank it 4th. Am I overrating a May & Lever led backline. I don't think so. I expect our backline to be right up there next year. My rank 4th. Forwards remain a worry. Don’t know what ranking was in 2018 when they were fit but we scored the most points for the comp. With the rest of the team firing and a fully fit forward line and remembering it was the highest scoring forward line in 2018 maybe 6-8 with good delivery. Ruck 2nd. Says Gawny better tap ruckmand but Grundy gets first because does more around the ground. My rankings add up to 60 which ranks us 4th.

  16. This site is full of people looking for someone to blame and possessing short memories. Jack is copping the blame from many who seem to forget his finals performance and the leadership he has shown since Round 1 in 2013

  17. i don't understand the denigrating of viney at all for me it's either jack solo otherwise it's jack and max as half-skips there's a LOT that goes into being captain these days beyond what we see on field

  19. Just did some checking Round 7 1966. Barrie Vagg 5 goals 5 behinds.. Demons beat Bombers by 5 goals. Norm Smith was still coaching at that stage. Reminded me a bit of Geoff Tunbridge though I was very young then and can't picture him all that well in my memory-and also a bit like John Northey..elusive and could slot wonderful goals.

  20. Clean, talented footballer, no staging, no appeals to the rabbits. Some of his goals were remarkable - even by the standards of today.

  21. Took a year off from the weekly tipping this year but I think I did pretty well with my predictions. 2/4 division and 1/2 wildcard in the AFC. Cleveland and Jags weren't so great. Oops. A yard away from 4/4 in the NFC. There's a chance of 4 really good wildcard weekend games and then the two weeks after are probably the highlight of the season each year. Some really good games coming up.

  26. I know it's just a puff piece to generate column inches, but the writer didn't think having Max Gawn as one of the two clearly best-in-a-generation ruckmen wasn't worth including?

  30. Thanks for that info GV... Richardson’s name does ring a bell, and having moved from Melbourne to Sydney in 1979, perhaps I had read his Age contributions back in the day. I’m down in Melbourne mid January, so I’ll keep an eye out for his book.

  32. I'm interested in whether you posted that you were "digusted" with our drafting before or after it was leaked to you. Also keen to hear your explanation for posting inside info from a club official on a public website if you're so concerned with leaking?

  33. I have never bet on this club. But I will be having a decent go this year for top 4. As good a list as we have had in a long time. Touch wood we remain injury free leading into 2020.

  34. "Grassroots footy is where the game’s version of climate change is occurring. The game is shrinking at its base. Best thing I saw in footy this year? More African kids coming through. For the same reason, we need women’s footy to prosper." I only hope Gill & the Commission are not asleep at the wheel with this...unfortunately I think they may be. Or perhaps it's just self interest being put ahead of the game.

  35. Reading’s not your strong suite? I can’t think of any one other sports writer (or non sports journo, for that matter) who comes close to capturing the spirit of the game in the way that Flanagan does.

  40. Thanks for the thoughtful replies- some good perspectives and I enjoyed reading your views. You are spot on Loges-LOL- at my older age these time warps pop up every now and then. We relied a lot on radio for VFL coverage back in my day-and they really brought the footy alive even without the visuals. Though we did enjoy Pelaco Inquest with Mike Williamson and the TV replays on a Saturday night before reading the Sporting Globe! If I start rambling and calling Langdon "Bluey Adams" in my posts then I think a cup of warm milk and a pair of slippers and a nap might be needed on my part!

  41. Personally I think it’s too early to write Dunkley off as ‘depth’. He’s been in the system for half a season, was highly rated in that mid-season draft and has played senior footy. It took his brother Josh a few years to get going and his whole family are sporting achievers so there’s a lot of scope for him - particularly being a young bloke. Rivers inclusion in the senior team will be dictated by Hibbo’s availability and form. A season developing at Casey will be fine however I do I agree he looks a likely type to slot in to the team earlier rather than later.

  42. Can't see Hoare in best 22. Recently watched 2019 game replays and saw him give away too many free kicks and goals. He would need to improve dramatically. Right now, I'm thinking that if we need one of Oscar and Hoare, I'm going with Oscar.

  45. As a professional for sure he will move on once he has achieved a record of note - no matter how long or short he will leave an imprint . He spoke exceptional well at fan forum. Off the cuff and not planning to speak but Goodwin threw to him several times to let him handle his area of expertise. Good of Goodwin, not hogging the mike.

  47. A few years ago, i had Sen and Josh mahoney was speaking about Jack, this was before he was captain. Mahoney said Jack would sit down with all the first year players, such as Clyaton Oliver, from the previous match. Mahoney said it was all Jacks idea, and that he was told to do it from the coaches, Mahoney said he was blown away, by what Jack was doing. He also said at all the clubs he has been to he had never seen such leader ship skills. I love big Maxy as well so would be happy with both being captians.
