  3. Anyone that thinks that GWS winning is good for football is insane. They have been gifted so much at our (and other) teams expense, and will continue to do so for years. Love or hate Collingwood at least they are a real team with real history, unlike those Mc Donalds things planted in the middle of rugby land. As much as I know that another Richmond flag will bring out the munters that follow that team in droves, I hope the Tigers smash the living crap out of them and headfuck them for the next 50 years

  4. There was a hushed silence on the streets of Melbourne tonight. Traffic was light. Did the cool change after the last couple of fine days keep people indoors? Was it the heavy showers of rain which passed over the suburbs intermittently? Certain citizens cast a gloomy pall over everyone within their radius. Was it the return of wintry weather the reason for this despondency in the air? No. There was an unexpected result at the MCG this afternoon. Shame.?

  5. Didn't we also play in 2 of the 4 GF's in the VFL?

  6. Conflicted yes but certainly not clueless Jack. They know EXACTLY what they're doing. Everything is extremely well massaged and managed, starting with the fixture each season and ending in a rediculous FA system that allows the likes of Lynch to end up at a team that won a premiership merely two seasons ago. Very few outcomes / trends are accidental in the AFL system anymore including the Toby Greene suspension. Fairness is certainly not a word i would equate in any way with the AFL and it's been that way since the VFL backflipped on its original agreement to rotate the recruiting zones back in the late 60s.

  7. The decision is set to be announced in the next few days. The conspiracy theorists will maintain that the AFL is deliberately burying the story amid the general noise of the Brownlow Medal count and the hype surrounding Grand Final week. It’s indisputable that the Gold Coast Suns need special assistance. The help they received last year wasn’t enough to provide the instant fix they wanted but there were some extenuating circumstances. They had salary cap issues and let a top line midfielder in Jarryd Lyons go to Brisbane for nothing, their #3 draft pick in Izak Rankine was injured and didn’t play a game and not enough time has passed to determine how they fared in trading out Lynch and May. They are set to lose a potential gun in Jack Martin. Yet the word is out that the Suns are set to receive a priority draft pick at the start of the draft - notwithstanding that they have performed no worse than Melbourne did when it was crying out for draft assistance earlier this decade and was categorically denied. I accept that Melbourne will be the main “victim” of such a move and that it’s not a great disaster to get #3 instead of #2 but it nevertheless reeks of AFL inconsistency and decision-making on the run. The governing body seems clueless and conflicted whether it’s in making decisions on priority picks or in allowing people to sit on tribunals who clearly should not be there.

  8. A link to an exercise I found worthwhile doing. Toggle through the years beginning in 2011 - the Giants first draft where they admittedly were handed a swathe of first round draft picks - and then follow through until the 2018 draft and you’ll come to the realisation that a lot of those high picks have moved on to other clubs or have been broken with injury (Patton) or left the game (Boyd). Whilst it irks me to even acknowledge this, the Giants have basically made the most value out of their trades which of course have usually resulted in more high draft picks that’s left them at the pointy end of the National draft again and again. I wonder how all of Treloar, Adams and Hoskins-Elliott (ex-GWS top 10 picks) we’re feeling yesterday as they were running around in Pies jumpers? GWS draft history

  10. Eddie also has his tentacles everywhere UF. Pitty it had to be the orange circus but would rather that than another 'Colllllliiiiinwoooood' chant echoeing around the G next Saturday. The Toiges have at least managed to grow and prosper organically, especially on the road, where they've played plenty more than the filth over the last decade or so and often come out the victor agaisnt the odds on many occasions. They were also on their last legs like us when they went on their fund raiser many moons back and have completely turned things around. Their supporters have stuck fat also going through a massive finals drought but still turning up for more rubbish year after year until things finally turned. It has a familiar ring to it.

  12. I can't understand why out of the 1,026,000 people watching the PF last night, the only one who thought that goal wasn't clearly touched has been employed by the AFL as a goal reviewer... FMD ?‍♂️

  13. I could equally argue that the Gold Coast path is the norm - there's a million ways to fail and very few to succeed. The truth is somewhere in the middle and Gold Coast have done poorly while GWS have excelled. People bleat about the draft concessions that the start-ups had and how they've disadvantaged other clubs. The bottom 4 teams in 2010 - the year GC had their draft concessions were Brisbane, Essendon, Richmond, West Coast (16th) The bottom 5 teams in 2011 - the year GWS had their draft concessions were Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Port, Gold Coast (17th) All these teams have subsequently played finals and 2 of them have won flags. The are great football people at GWS who have given blood for the cause like Alan McConnell the last coach of Fitzroy. He has been at GWS since day dot, try telling him he doesn't deserve some success.

  14. If it was about attitude we would have all been champion foitballers Wyl And you do just blame Goodwin. All the time. In fact, you never shut up about him. You rarely, if ever, talk about the actual talent levels of the players. You bang on about 'Attitude' way too much. No amount of great attitude was ever going to turn Toumpas, Blease, Morton, Cook, Tapscott, Strauss, Maric, Gysberts and hundreds of others into good footballers. Way too many failures for it to be simply about attitude. They all had the same thing in common ... they couldn't play and we recruited them. So the answer is to move them on and recruit real talent. But we just prefer the lottery (the draft) ... and we just keep coming back for more as if it's all going to turn around. Draft = Fools Gold. Meanwhile, we're a cellar dweller without any real ambition. We don't know how to be a power club. It's not about attitude, it's about being realistic and smart. We are quite determined but in the wrong way. You've got to have a good plan organised by smart people with good governance.

  15. It’s a tendency of AFL commentators to go into auto-pilot and find themselves saying obvious rubbish such as... “You get the feeling that (team name) really needs to get a goal soon”. It’s great to hear the sound of the crowd and the general atmosphere of the game. Having a “mute” function on those muppets would be an excellent feature. That or adopt the Premier League approach and only have one professional broadcaster calling the game, as opposed to several ex-player deadshits vying for “personality of the year”.

  16. Not sure why we would delist a player who is contracted for next year? We would have to pay out his contract meaning it’s still in the salary cap, he’s ahead of other guys still on the list so if like this year we have injuries we have to select a player that is not as good as him, and if we get rid of him we have to find another player to go on the list who may or may not be better than him. I think the best option is for us is to attempt to develop him into the player we need him to be. Caleb Daniel is an example of a guy of similar stature (Charlie is actually 5cm taller) who has found a niche and I would think it would be in our best interests to work with Charlie to find his best role.

  17. To both - sure, and I realise that my opinion is unpopular given who GWS beat, but they have guns in their side that should have been ours but for AFL gifts. And I don't think for a moment that things will return to normal after success. What will happen is that the spike of interest will drop off as they do too, and then they will be looked after again. Sydney isn't allowed to fail for that reason too (though I'm old enough to call them South, so I have no issue with that team being helped). Suns to Tassie - a bit off topic, but yes. I think the AFL now knows it put a team into a graveyard and no matter what they throw at them it will always be a failure. Hmmm The Hobart 'It's not sunny, but at least we can play football'?

  19. I don't know why but I was quite calm in the dying minutes of the last quarter. Everyone around me was so stressed, convinced Collingwood was going to pinch the win. The commentators kept saying, there's plenty of time, plenty of time, for them to score, even down to the last two minutes. My view was the opposite. I was convinced the wobbles were going to run out of time, because the Giants were able to lock in the ball, or it ended up over the boundary. I don't think the commentators could believe Collingwood were going to lose. They kept raving about how they came back from being 32 points down or whatever it was. Well, they didn't win, so who cares about the comeback. Another failure.

  20. I am of an age where I have more well trodden path behind me than open road in front of me. My age may go some way towards my attitude toward the modern day use of some words now employed in footy circles. There are two in particular that annoy me. "Craft" - as in "Preuss to work on forward craft." When I was growing up footballers had skills. There was an art to how the position were played. Referring to something as a craft, to me removes art from a player. Removes the imagination that players require. We have all seen players do something otherworldly that is in no way a 'craft'. I would love this word banished from the MFC coaching panel and replaced with discussion about skills and imagination. "Learnings" - They are lessons FFS. Thank you for reading. I am sure there are other things in the same vein that annoy people.

  26. Oh! Spare me, They seem to find a way to be beaten with Buckley at the reins Wce now GWS. At the Fish and chip shop in Collingwood, the owner George said that the Magpies will win and we will be busy as Hell for the weekend. Well George you should have bought the shop in Richmond as they are doing a roaring trade as we speak.

  27. Yes indeed well done Fellas on some top picks. That race had about 7 former ADATR selections running in it including Widgee Turf which i was going to make my best for a place, but i think its probably best not to have 2 picks in the same race. i can always back it myself anyway, which i did. Nice work Binman at the Randwick mud throwing contest. I notice the jockey on Black Heart Bart said, " the horse felt better than its felt for a long time. The 1400m was too sharp for him and needs to step up. Hes ready to show something". Might be worth following, since his race odds have been around the 60/1 mark of late.

  28. Tom Browne just said that we've offered Elliot 3 years while the pies have offered 2. Also said other clubs like Bulldogs and Hawthorn will chase Elliot hard also in the next coming weeks. Interestingly he also said that Melbourne have a tight salary cap space at the moment.

  29. At the start of this thread GWS had picks 11 and 13. That is now #11 and #17-18 which will be #12 (or 13) and #18-20 after pp, GA comp picks and academy picks. The slide for us is huge and not only 'draft points'. The quality of player available at 18 to 20 is very different from one at 13. GWS will have to throw in something big to make a deal happen. If as mooted Patton goes to Hawks for a 1st round pick (Hawks currently have #10) I would be looking for at least that. Or GWS need to find some significant picks and A grade players. Gws don't voluntarily let go their A graders unless the player demands a trade to a club of his choice. Interesting times. I just hope we don't blink.

  30. I don't think so. They win this and that's their whack and we can go back a little more towards normality. Once they have won a flag, like Brisbane, like Adelaide, the Weagles and Port, their favours cease. I thought GWS were terrific yesterday. Very hard at the contest and while the ball was greasy and mistakes were made their determination to put in a second, third, even fourth effort to regain the ball or pressure the Pies was sensational. It was very good finals football. They dominated the first half but did not get the reward. Collingwood, however, had no forwards and only looked threatening when they could get their slingshot happening. The Giants' pressure stopped them doing that more than a couple of times. They only got going once they could exploit Grundy's dominance. If GWS win it, they'll have played well and the bars and restaurants in Swan St, let alone the motorists parked there, can rest easier. Then we push back into a fairer competition. (I just wish the Suns are sent to Tassie.)

  31. Just to be clear, we wouldn't need to use a pick on him. He's a Delisted Free Agent. If we came to an agreement with him he'd be a free hit. With that in mind, I wouldn't mind taking a punt. We're in a bad position list-wise in that we've brought in too many inside contested beasts and no outside players to balance things. This is a player who could fill one of those spots and go a long way towards balancing the side better. He costs us nothing to bring over and would probably take a pretty low contract to get himself back into the system. Sign him up to a two year contract, tell him he's got to show the team that he's committed on the training track and spend time helping Nev with his community work. I say two years because he won't be able to do a full pre-season this year. If we gave him that time to get his body sorted and then put the pressure on in the next year we'd see what he really has to offer.

  33. If you look back it was not so long ago they were Ninthmond. The coach was under constant scrutiny, "can he coach?" was the media and supporter's refrain. As noted elsewhere it was only a few years ago that they cleaned out all assistant coaches and gave him one more chance. A solid list with a few stars but not stellar. Players like Grimes have improved with sheer hard work. Ninth at the bye they didn't drop their heads. I look at where they were and think we certainly can emulate that outcome. Houli in a post match interview stated how much the players love Hardwick and how he believes in them. Before last year I got that sense from our players. Last night their recruiting of two high profile players Lynch and Prestia really paid off. Perhaps we need to be bold again in that space. At this time of year we tend to focus on our woes and holes but are we that different to the old Ninthmond? I have some real confidence we can do it if we hang in there. I look at what the Tigers have done and see no reason we can't do the same.

  34. Very true from a statistical point of view and the enjoyment their supporters received from watching more wins and better football. In the end though they still didn’t win a premiership.

  35. Is there still any possibility of the Suns receiving that priority pick after the bottom 10 teams have all had their first rounders? Would at least seem fair for most clubs, especially those towards the bottom of the ladder. Everybody seems to be harping on about how deep this draft is, so wouldnt a later pick work just as well? But I mean honestly, how can the AFL keep rewarding a club with these picks?? Used pick 2 or 3 (I cant remember) on Lachie Weller who is a genuine B grader, played Jack Martin in the 2s for half this year and will walk this year, let Jarryd Lyons walk for almost nothing to the Lions - just to name a few.

  41. Agreed, but I reckon some have forgotten how many scoring chains he got involved in over last year, particularly in those two finals we won. First year player, he had a pretty good start. A poor second year, but he wouldn't be the first. I agree his kicking is a limitation, but if he works on his tank, I think he'll be a good role player.

  43. We will also be able to guarantee he will avoid the heart-ache of losing another close PF, as we tend to make sure the result is beyond doubt prior to half-time. Plus he'll probably have most of his September's free too (no doubt a big lure).
