  1. Well I'll tell you why he might choose us. If we are the rabble you think we are why did Burgess and Richardson come to us when they had plenty of alternatives? Why would Langdon and Tomlinson even consider us (and appear very likely to join) given they appear to have a lot of alternatives? Why haven't a raft of players requested trades if we are such a rabble? I think it's because, like me, they don't think we are a rabble and they actually think we have a very bright future. Rather than slashing their wrists and going all hang dog about this season we've just had they may have asked themselves what happened for a club that finish in a PF in 2018 to fall to 17th in 2019. And strangely it happened without us losing a meaningful player(s). They probably thought that a good club one year, without any change of personnel on or off the field wouldn't have had the 2019 year they did without good reason. And here are some reasons (which I've posted elsewhere) they may have considered: These players were in discussions for our best 22 this season:- B: Jetta May Lever HB: Salem OMac Hibberd ? Harmes Oliver Fritsch HF: Petracca Weid ANB F: Melksham TMac Spargo R: Gawn Brayshaw Viney I: Kolo, Jones, AVB, J Smith Others: Hannan, Preuss, Lewis, Stretch, Frost, Hore That's 28 players that I would have expected to form the basis of the team for the season. You can take off and add some of your own but it won't change the arguments below. These players had significantly interrupted Preseasons (17): Jones, Harmes, Oliver, Petracca, Brayshaw, Viney Jetta, May, Lever, Hibberd, Melksham, TMac, Kolo, Hannan, Hore, OMac and Stretch These players had Injury ruined seasons after a good PS (3): Weideman, AVB, JSmith, These players had a full PS and good run at the season (8): Salem, Fritsch, ANB, Spargo, Gawn, Preuss, Frost, Lewis I'm working from memory so you can correct me on some of the details but the facts are compelling. 17 or our best 28 players had significantly interrupted PS's and three others had significantly disrupted seasons. Of the 8 players who had a good go at it only Salem, Fritsch, Gawn and Frost were definite best 22 for me and some will add Lewis. That's 4 players and not one midfielder. Now fitness aside, is it any wonder connection from backs to forwards through the midfield was awful. Why? Because they didn't practice over the PS. Is it any wonder our skill level was awful. Why? Because most of our best 22 didn't do a lot of ball work over the preseason and we had a whole lot of NQR players in the team, many who didn't practice over the preseason. So Steve I'm guessing that anyone looking at joining our Club recognizes there are very good reasons for why we were awful this year and they expect us to rebound quickly. I do and Richardson, Burgess and a couple of handy players clearly do. They wouldn't join us if they thought we were a rabble. Why wouldn't Elliott think the same?

  2. "I've seen the (Hawkins) incident, what I will say is what I think in recent weeks in the AFL is moving away from suspensions. "I agree with the AFL's approach, you want the best players out there playing so I'd hope there's consistency in that." - Patrick Dangerfield 3AW Interview today what an absolute disgrace

  3. Good idea dp. I won't be able to make it, but my queries are: 1. Joel Smith did not play all year after being left on the ground in a practice match clearly injured. Convince me this was not incompetence on the part of coaches/medical team. 2. Steven May turned up to the club unfit/overweight and missed more games this year than his last five years. How are we preparing both returning players this year and trade-ins/draftees alike given May was clearly not informed on expectations before arrival. 3. How was an even more immature forward line than last year with the loss of Hogan and Weideman part time allowed to be run under a first year line coach for as long as it was? In fact, what was the basis for giving Rooke the gig in the first place, I'd have expected a more experienced coach for a less experienced forward line. 4. If the board was forewarned before the season commenced that our pre-season was disastrous with respect to lack of fitness, why were the members not given ANY indication of this. Short term revenues gain from more members, upgraded membership categories including gf guarantees etc will now be more than offset next year with reduced memberships next year because we've got a board that are evidently not transparent and honest with their members. 5. Give me an example where we tried a Plan B in a game that wasn't going well.

  4. Firstly, that is a horrible deal. Secondly, we don't have to give the Pies anything. We can sign him for nothing.

  5. EAD Hawkins. You might kick lots of goals but you’ve always been a staging and sniping piece of [censored]. Clearly I’m a fan.

  6. Mate, Frost’s line breaking ability is to the detriment of our performance. The guy is a walking turnover.

  8. I'm not happy about Sellwood being allowed to stay on the ground covered in blood. It is arguable that we missed the top four last season because Max was dismissed for the last minute at Geelong with the merest speck of blood on his lip.

  9. I only know how well he’s doing because he’s ex-Melbourne but him being an ex-Dee has nothing to do with why I want him. Hawthorn managed to finish fourth last season (and didn’t do too badly this season considering their list) with an average list, they knew their opposition and prepared to counter them better than any other team. Yze’s role at the Hawks is match day and opposition coach, he’s exactly what we need.

  13. To the first sentence, well done. You've just further indicated to me that no matter how many training sessions you attend, you genuinely don't know the intricacies of off-season preparation and what coming back 'underdone' means at this level. And to the second paragraph, Goodwin has now stated numerous times that we had far too many players go through an interrupted pre-season which had a direct impact on our season. For someone who consistently repeats the words of MFC coaches, it really doesn't make any sense whatsoever that you 'don't believe it should be an excuse'.

  14. Well it’s mayhem here in Perth. Supporters have pulled out the ‘Kerr, Cousins, Fletcher, Mainwaring, Gardiner, Rioli’ code of conduct booklet and are rioting in the street with glass bbq’s in hand. I’m staying indoors today.

  15. Goal-kicking and development coach in 13 and 14 then 15 he was their backline coach. Hawks players speak very highly of Yze in assisting their kicking accuracy.

  17. Frost is 309th in the league for average metres gained. He's even well behind Stretch! Salem is our best at 47th. A lot of talk here about Frost's alleged attacking abilities. I think where he showed great improvement is his defensive abilities - uses his closing speed well and can stop tall (Ben Brown) or small (Elliott). I'm dubious we'll get enough value for him in a pick trade - probably a pick in the late 20s. If we trade him I hope it's for a player we need.

  18. Spud was so humble that when asked to carry the Commonwealth Games torch in his leg he sought out children with disabilities to carry it with him. Our daughter was one of the lucky kids chosen- this act proved to me what a lovely guy he was. Such a tragedy - my prayers go out to his family and loved ones at this time.

  19. Frustrated for a couple of weeks maybe.. Bloke would be rubbing his hands together with the team he’s got on his hands. This years achievement was premature. Id kill to have what they have. They play for keeps...something out players don’t do. It’s all too hard..

  23. First line correct - but they do it all the time. Second line: why he is on the field is irrelevant. AFL must be the only code where the players, officials and commentators have never bothered to read the rules. The commentators' discussion about what's acceptable is a laugh. Here's a simple way to avoid it. Any contact which is deliberate and does not involve trying to get the ball, tackling, shepherding etc should be prohibited contact whether players are injured or not. Would cut out stupid niggling which has nothing to do with footy skills.

  25. Frost is a good player, that's why Hawthorn, and I suspect others, are looking at him. We have good coverage for KPD (assuming they can overcome their fitness issues) and we are in need of repair in other areas of the ground. Trade what you have a surplus in and fill the holes. It won't be a bad trade until we know what we get back and how that return performs. But it's quite logical to look at trading Frost for something we need.

  30. I wish salaries were public like USA sports, it would give us an indication of the opportunity cost of signing Elliot. I think the Dees are a greay fit for him, and us. But I would not like to be paying him in 3 years time if it means not having the cash to extend and Oliver/Harmes/Fritta type player.

  36. Lots on here think the moving on of so many assistant coaches proves it wasn’t injuries that sent us tumbling this year. Viney doing his first preseason in five years, Lever doing a preseason, Oliver doing a preseason and May not coming back like December Christmas feast will see us improve rapidly. Bring in Yze for some Clarkson IP and we challenge next year.

  39. Yes Drunkn Dec has achieved more than many and his dedication and perseverance did reap some small reward. His game was memorable and it's a pity he could not become one of our regular top players. I hope he continues to ply his trade and can enjoy the game at any level. I also hope both he and you continue your passion for the red and blue through more than occasional visits. Your comments tinged with the insiders perspective we're always wonderful and in no way condescending to us less favoured . You also never betrayed any insider confidence although I imagine you had some. Please continue to give your forthright opinion as I always welcomed it. We have had many years of disappointment but indeed our hearts still true, I am hoping you both will provide us with some personal thoughts as we all continue our journey. You will always be welcome in Beechworth and if you identify yourself at Tanswells I am sure there will be some crazed demon supporter to shout you that drink. I hope it's me.

  41. We have a vacancy for a strategy coach. Yze is coming from being the strategy coach for one of the best strategical teams in the comp under one of the best strategical coaches in AFL history. People can have whatever reasons they wish, but that's the reason he's being sought out by the club for the current vacancy.

  43. I wouldn't say i was a Lever doubter but its fair to say nor was i completely sold on him. But i could not have been more impressed with his attitude and approach in the last two games of the season, particularly in the horror game against the swans.. You learn a lot about people in adversity and when things are not going well. And Lever raised his intensity and will to compete and provided a clear example to others. That is leadership. He makes a terrific point about the best defenses playing together regularly. Its absolutely critical and a huge reason why the Tiger's back half is so effective.

  47. Call it that if you wish, but I did raise this (not on here) early in the season as a possible contributing factor for our poor form, but it was generally dismissed due to not being a significant enough factor, including by myself. In the end, I believe 2019 has been a case of death-by-a-thousand-cuts. No singular reason, but a combination of many factors. And if you keep doing the right things, and work hard enough for long enough, the wheel will turn.
