Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Melbourne star defender Steven May has multiple broken ribs and minor vertebrae damage after the brutal hit that has kept him in hospital overnight on Saturday.

The Demons said on Sunday only that May had suspected broken ribs after Hawthorn forward Mabior Chol flew high to mark and instead put his knee into the All Australian defender’s back.

It is understood May has as many as three broken ribs and also a small crack in his vertebrae that will see him sidelined in coming weeks given the extent of the damage.

While players have on rare occasions played on with bruised or cracked ribs, May will need to heal his ribs in coming weeks.

Geelong’s Jeremy Cameron cracked his ribs in a friendly fire collision with teammate Gary Rohan last year and missed the next two matches.

May could be joined by fellow defensive star Jake Lever after scans on Sunday on his injured knee.

He said post-match he had soreness behind his knee cap, with coach Simon Goodwin hopeful the injury is only minor.

Melbourne believes it has the depth to cover for its star defensive duo if both miss the road trip to take on both South Australian sides in the next fortnight.

The Demons take on Port Adelaide on Saturday night at Adelaide Oval, then Adelaide at the game venue on the Thursday of Gather Round five days later.

They will take an expanded squad to Adelaide and remain in the city between those games.

Harry Petty was switched into defence in their absence and second-chance hero Marty Hore stood up as a defensive all.

Adam Tomlinson, desperately unlucky to be dropped for Tom McDonald last week, played VFL on Sunday and is another option.

Demons defender Trent Rivers told SEN on Sunday the club had enough depth.

“Maysey was still in hospital this morning getting scans and Jake is having scans today,” he said.

“But I am hoping for the best for both of them. We have a next man in mentality and whoever will come in if they do miss weeks is going to do the job.”

I'd be in a coffin.

No way he only misses 2 games with that diagnosis.

I just spoke to my friend who is a GP and she said 6 weeks for 3 ribs.

You just knew it was bad for maysy to stay down. He's as tough as anyone. Fingers crossed. He's an absolutely unbelievable player.

Tbh Im  crossing my fingers they don’t rush him back. Let him miss 6 weeks or so and come back strong. We need him fully fit in September not struggling.

Which means 3 for Stephen May plus the bye giving him a Month off. All going well that’s all Lever misses as well

I'd be surprised if May misses more than three weeks and hopefully he is back for the Brisbane match. He can always wear a guard to help protect the ribs. As for the cracked vertebrae while it sounds serious it might not pact him in any way. I'm not to stressed as we have plenty of depth and will ensure we keep evolving.

Agree with the sentiments here, far too valuable a player to rush back.  We have the bye coming let’s give it as much time as needed.

Whilst no one replaces May and Lever in terms of quality, we do have plenty of capable options in these positions and it shows how valuable swingmen like Petty and Tmac could be for us to get through this period, with Tomlinson in good form as well.

I’m remembering, if my memory is correct, the 1989 season and the Hawks. Both Dunstall and Dermie were badly  injured in a home and away  game against us. Dunstall with a bad head injury and Brereton had to miss quite a few as well. They not only won the game against us that day but went on to win the flag as well.

Hoping we are as resilient.

Do they release someone from hospital with a cracked vertebrae?

My husband cracked his vertebrae a few years ago and had to wear a brace for six months. It was very painful and certainly limited his movement. I know each case is different ( and my husband is much older than Maysie and not an athlete) but you have to tread carefully and allow healing to occur slowly.

Not official official

I always wonder how these things get out to the media without the club or May himself revealing the results.

Is it not personal medical information that should be protected under law?

Is this reverse karma? Where the punishment happens before the crime?

Brasso used to say, back in the 70's, you have to plan to win the premiership with 3 of your best 12 unavailable.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
