Mad Monday… a thing of the past?

Callum Mills has sustained a shoulder injury that requires surgery and will likely see him miss round one. The injury was as a result of wrestling with a teammate during Mad Monday celebrations.

I’m wondering if clubs should 86 the whole Mad Monday thing. Why tempt fate?

Nah gruelling season that's already about 4 weeks too long (that's coming directly from a few players i've spoken to).

A traditional bonding 'let-your-hair-down' bit of fun.  The old way is probably more risky (end of season trip).

If you don't let them have the mad monday they'll just find other ways of letting their hair down.  Some of which may end up in worse outcomes.

Boys will be boys.  Let them be boys.

Agree with you Demon Dynasty up until the final line about boys will be boys.  Our AFLW team are the dangerous ones!  (Just ask WCW 😂)

Definitely like the team bonding aspect and people will destress with parties in the end of season whether or not the club sanctions it.

I think with our boys, they're really quite sensible these days (aside from the Entrecote moment last year 😬). The Insta stories about our AFL Mad Monday seemed to be at a very boring venue with nothing much except for a pool table.  Probably a smart move.

Mad Monday is only fun if you win a premiership. (Personally great experience....)

Now days it's a silly Sunday/all day drinking session. That's pretty much an opportunity for all players just to wind down and enjoy each other's company before you all part ways until pre season.

Obviously you'll get the occasional idiots that just really blow off steam but other then that I think it's certainly a bit more tame these days.

The boys should be allowed to unwind and relax a little. It's a long season.

the problem is nowadays with smart phones and journalists it can attract unwanted attention. There has to be some kind of club oversight to make sure nothing happens that can reflect badly on the club. Which kind of defeats the purpose of mad Monday. No fun if the boss is supervising.

That said I don't think the young ones today are as big into the booze as older generations. I'm not sure whether they have much interest in it anymore.

I'm not so sure.  Bit of leaked footage from our mad monday...

The myth of Mad Monday at the top level far exceeds the reality of it.

Serious’/unsavoury Mad Monday incidents in the last 10 years at AFL level are rare.

Mad Monday/Sloppy Sunday/Tanked Tuesday/Wiped Out Wednesday at local level is often a different story though (Glen Hawks a case in point).

Geelong ruined it with their dress up nonsense

Of course the boys should meet up and get hammered together and have a laugh. Spotlight is too much these days so they do it on the quiet or at someones house

Makes me wonder...would clubs have some responsibilities (OH&S, etc) for the behaviour of players at "Mad Mondays"? I know at my workplaces over the last 20-30 years, the employer has had increased responsibility for the behaviour of its employees during events such as Christmas parties, etc.

I was lucky enough to be invited to our W Mad Monday (a week prior to breaking my foot at the B&F 😩) and lemme tell ya… those girls can party! But there was no stupid behaviour. Just a lot of drinking and dancing and generally having a ball. Kudos to the girls for partying long into the night with us considering it was the day after winning the premiership, most of them hadn’t slept because they’d partied the night before and they’d come to Mad Monday straight from the airport.

PS I got to wear Edo’s premiership medal. I don’t fully remember that but I’ve seen photos so it must’ve happened. 😁

I'm in the corporate sector. any firm organised event needs to be supervised including any after parties. OH&S requirements apply (there are some funny stories. there's always one). Staff are free to socialise together in their spare time and many do. as not firm sanctioned we don't need to worry from an OH&S perspective.

Football clubs are different in that the staff are well known footballers. If they head out and about in Melbourne they'll be seen by the general public. I've run into footy players back in the day in various states of intoxication. Whatever about OH&S, the PR aspect means the club will want to know what the players are up to and who they are socialising with. And Mad Monday may not be club sanctioned but it's so well-known its quite likely OH&S applies. If I'm the club i would make it a club mandated event so i can ensure it doesn't go off the rails.

If i was player, I'd be heading overseas. Vegas would be my go. Nobody knows who you are so if you do get in trouble much less likely to be front page news. No excuse for players to get in trouble on Mad Monday in Melbourne. Not very clever at all (Jordan De Goey would be a likely suspect though).

My favourite thing is people who spent their entire adult life at uni and then straight into an office job, where they’ve remained, having an opinion on how a group of young, elite, high performing individuals should spend their first day off. Let them be and just go away.

They can do whatever they want, as long as it does no harm to themselves or others.

It's the Mad Mondays that end up with someone getting done for assault, a long term injury, or inappropriate sexual behaviour, that I feel we have all moved past in 2023.

Allowing kids to undergo sex change surgery? The extreme-left I believe you’re referring to.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
