They're playing for their season and we're looking beaten up - Jack Viney, who has been carrying us for weeks, needs a rest and he won't be able to get it this week.  Clarrie can't come back quick enough now - we may get some respite vs North the following week.

There'll be "season-over" vibes on Demonland following the match, but I don't buy into that, we're still a very decent shot at the flag despite my pessimism about this week.

Is that view shared by others? I think the opposite. In the last two weeks, perhaps because of the Max factor, I think we've looked refreshed. We'd be better if Oliver and Fritsch were available, but those who have taken up the slack (Brayshaw and Viney in the midfield and Melksham forward) are playing as well as they've played for quite some time.

What is with the Petty obsession? He proved he could not cut it as a forward and his form this year as a back has been very scratchy. Constantly run down in the backline due to lack of awareness. Can't play 1 on 1. As a forward he hasn't been able to compete 1 on 1 and doesn't bring the ball to ground nearly as effectively as Brown. It's really funny how some players are harshly judged and others seem to be viewed through rose coloured glasses.

This may be the case now, but it prudent for the club to explore options like this for our younger players. Brown is on his last legs, and we are in a 3 year premiership window at a minimum.

Development of young players is key to extending our window.

Yeah, we are going to drop games while missing 2 of our top 7 players. I just want to see some exciting footy; there is no point in making it 60-70 slugfest.

If we win 70 to 60 in a slugfest I'm happy. We've played some exciting footy the past 2 weeks and luckily got 2 wins. I'm happy that we are playing and practicing different styles and have ability to adapt in game

I agree with Roost it and others. Would really like to see Petty in the forward line the next few weeks to have a serious look at it again before finals. He looked our best-contested option, providing proper physicality and grunt which we've lacked at times in the forward half. Gives plenty back to the key backs which I love.

The only real issue with Tomlinson is his lack of mobility and leg speed compared to Petty. May has a decent pace but has been hindered by his back this season and Lever doesn't cover ground quickly. Petty is one of the quicker players in the comp for a near 200cm player and has great closing speed.

Will be interesting to see what Goodwin does. Hopefully, he continues experimenting.

Should happen:
Out: Melk In: Smith.
Melk to sub. Purely a rest /workload issue, Smith will lose condition if he can’t play a full game and Melk’s done a power of work.

Could happen:
Out: Tomlinson In: Hibberd
Hibbo wasn’t great at Casey but if there’s no Tomlinson match up we’re better off with the Pig

Wont happen;
Out: Hunter In: Spargo/Money Man Wakefield
Taj to the wing, JJ back up wing. Would love a bit more speed and tackling at half forward against Rioli and the tiger runners. AMW isn’t as polished as Spargo but he’s building nicely and does some special stuff

Back JJ and Juddy in.

Petty a run in the 2’s for confidence and match fitness, Grundy one more week against better opposition.

Dropping an in form Melksham would be pretty silly. Been in our top 5 most important players, past 2 weeks

We can sort of be both...and that's when we come alive...   Let the backs lock it down... but a lot more daring do as McVee shows at times.. even Woey giving glimpses.  Control the back...light up the front. Pick your moments ...take your chances.

They say not to give a sucker and even break..  Keep the pressure on THEIR defence..

If the only difference in the end is the calibre of defence....we win.  If we can take that and add 'elements' of inspirational incursion .... if the likes of Chandler and Kozzi can pick their pockets..  we give ourselves double the likelihood of a win.

I wouldn't take this game lightly... but I'd  be attacking rather than defending.

IMO Richmond win this.  They've got very close to their best line-up available.  Yes they are missing Nankervis, but Soldo is capable replacement, Lynch is a big out - I think if he was available they'd be a real threat in finals this season.

They have a strong backline with Balta, Grimes, Vlaustuin, Broad and Rioli.  They have their full midfield complement and it's very deep: Taranto, Prestia, Bolton, Martin, Hopper, Baker, McIntosh, Ross, Pickett, Cotchin.  As above, their forward line would be much better with Lynch in, but they have sufficient dangerous avenues with Riewoldt, Martin and Bolton.

They're playing for their season and we're looking beaten up - Jack Viney, who has been carrying us for weeks, needs a rest and he won't be able to get it this week.  Clarrie can't come back quick enough now - we may get some respite vs North the following week.

Agree that they will up and about with a finals chance on the line. However, lets not forget they trailed Hawthorn by 5 goals at three quarter time, and like most young sides at this time of year, Hawthorn faltered

Richmonds recent wins have not been against the leagues best defenders.

Tiges recent wins:   rated defence (wheelo)

Hawthorn... .....  14th

West Coast.......  18th

Sydney.............  9th

St Kilda............  5th

Fremantle........  10th

Giants............  11th

Now they come up against....US... currently rated 2nd.

Our attack.... 7th v their 10th

We ought to shade them.  But they'll ve having a red hot go...   but we wont disappear in the 4th

Agree with your thoughts on Petty and would like to see him back at CHF perhaps after a week at Casey to road test his body.

Down the track we may well have to deal with the likes of Allir Allir and Darcy Moore if we are to progress. They are keys to their team's defences and might need to be nullified.  BBB can't do that. Additionally we might face Brisbane again.  They're not likely to fall for the Melksham v Harris Andrews trick again so Petty is our best bet at CHF in my view. Both offensively and defensively.

Yeah I agree with this - both stiff but I’d like to see Pig back

Pig has authority written all over him against experienced forwards - like those in the Tigers team. Should get a run for 2-3 quarters and then rested (at this stage of the season and its promise of finals), then swing in Tomlinson for some rough, tough leg work and spoiling; I reckon that Tomlinson is  blending well with Lever/May at the moment and has sometimes gapped them when their lack of speed has caught them out of position. Petty is the alternative but is asked to play the Lever/May role too frequently by intercept marking. Petty, Hibbo, Lever, May  (May could swing forward on occasion), McVie and Bowser for mine, creating a single gap for a mobile Salem and a drop back Gus on occasion for the shallow stuff.

I’m not dropping him because he’s been poor, I’m moving him to sub because he’s important and is 30+ with a history of injuries the last few years.

And because Smith is equally important and can’t go another week just playing a quarter.

Smith could go back to Casey but we need a mid sized tall as sub because BBB can’t go a full game.

"Melbourne look beaten up or banged up" ????   Why?

Melbourne dont look beaten up and why would Melksham get dropped FFS.

Richmond almost lost to Hawthorn last weekend.....Dads army. Huge crowd will help Tiges  but no cigar.

Negativity in full swing again.  We've just beaten two sides that threw everything at us.

Brown, TMac, Petty, May, Trac and Chandler?

You can't just swing a KD forward without training fot it over an extensive period.... most likely off season.

May did start off his career in a brief stint as a KF but it's probably too late in his career now and you are robbing Peter to pay Paul taking him out of a Premiership defensive line up.

Or we could go Trac, Fritta, Melk, Chandler, ANB and Kozz

Too small and no g'tee Fritta will return back to full fitness / form in time for finals.

If we have to experiment with forwards there is no way we can play with the back six   ,May Lever Rivers Salem and Petty stay there with a movable feast for the last spot and through the centre

Have no idea if Petty is up to speed or not.

Have to assume he is if we decide to bring him in.

Surely Tomo has earned his stripes down back.  Unless they decide Hibb is raring / ready to go for another Dusty ding dong as a horses for course in/out for Tomo (this week).

Looking at the lay of the land including form vs the Crows my gut feel is....

Barring any last minute fitness hic ups, Petty is highly likely to come in for BB and play a defensive forward role on Balta, the league's No.1 intercept marking defender.

Smith to stay as Sub or possibly a swap with Melk to give Smith some more serious match time and keep him at the level.  Melk managed a tad to also keep him fresh.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
