Like which part?

Kicking? Goals? Overhead marking/spoiling? Defensive pressure as a stoppage sweeper? Attack on ground balls? Tackling?

The one thing he does to an ok standard is positioning in transition but he can be exploited by teams when he’s dropped back too far too.

He’s just completely meh.

He is in the team, like Langdon, for his defensive positioning and ability to understand when to push and when not to. It’s obvious that Goodwin likes to play with the AFL version of wingbacks and he, like Ed, is never going to hit it into the Haymes paint bucket from 30m but they will both be there at the kick out of the D50 and the kick I50.

I don’t really think he has been tremendous but meh is an undersell. If Woey had a year like that we’d be salivating.

Yep Tomo stays in. If Petty is fit I think he could play forward replacing Brown or do a warm up at Casey as I think he hasn’t looked right in recent games, allowing Smith another chance forward.

The Tigers have some pluck about them but we should be challenging the team to push the pressure with forward movement and kick 4 goals a quarter at least. If it is 110 to 90 so be it, I don’t think we can keep good teams to 60 with 6-6-6 and the way the teams at the top play - more likely than not they are going to kick 5 of 7 goals and we just have to meet that in our own way.

I'd like to see Hibberd in for Dusty who is in very good form. The out is tough though - McVee or Bowey, I'd like to retain both.  I thought Woey was, not surprisingly, off the pace today and he'd be my out but it would take some shuffling to achieve it.

With Kossie playing higher I'd like to see some more defensive pressure inside 50 but I'm not sure who we could move in there to provide it. McVee is probably the best option but it's a big, crazy move.

It’s a tough call. I don’t think you can drop McVee tho. His dash just needs to be rewarded.

I prefer a Spargo-less forward line especially with Fritsch not there. CS is smart with ball in hand but he is like Chris Paul sometimes with how play slams to a stop as he assesses all the options he can no longer use. Fritsch was great at finding that space and making that work.

Also, Pickett has to go up the ground and for that to be something we go back to - our forward line needs speed on the feet and ball - CS lacks both IMV.

McVee might go for a rest. Tough ask to play 24 games plus finals in your second season of AFL.
Plus McVee really had his colours lowered today by Rankine, who admittedly is an absolute gun, but you can make a case for him making way for Hibbo, who looked 90 levels above everyone else at Casey.

I would consider bringing in Petty forward but I know that won’t happen anymore. Just can’t see how you drop Tomlinson on today’s game. He was so much better than May, but of course you don’t drop May. Or do you “manage” him?

The big call will be Grundy. Richmond are basically ruckman-less. We could bring Grundy in for BB and try and stretch them that way?

Langdon manages to do it and still break lines going forward and whilst his kicking is hit and miss there’s at least some hits.

Woey had one kick today that was better than any of Hunter kicks in the last two months. Give him a half as the main wingman and if he’s floundering with positioning or work rate then sub Hunter on or switch it up.

JJ managed to do the Hunter role last year just as well too. It takes a big tank and discipline but shouldn’t we expect more?

At a minimum we should be planning for Gus to take the job back once Oliver is up and running. Gus has the same flaws but the bonus of elite overhead marking.

Woewodin does not have the elite endurance that Hunter has. A few times today he got lost in the transition from half forward to half back. It’s fine, he’s a kid, and it happens.
But to play wing requires the freakish ability to run and run and run repeatedly at top speed all day. Hunter and Langdon do that better than anyone. You will not see us place that burden on Woey in his first season.
JJ is ok but he doesn’t have the speed. It’s why we went and got another specialist wingman. Hunter is ridiculously maligned here for no reason.

Woey has good endurance and has played more wing than half forward at Casey and most likely in juniors too. I’m not suggesting he’s ready for 90% game time for weeks at a time but we could give him 75% as a one off to see where he’s at. Much like giving JVR the key forward job over the old boys even when he’s miles from his full physical development.

Hunter has absolutely no speed left and refuses to kick or turn corridor or do anything to use speed or skill. Surely the coaches wanted more than just positioning?

Watched the game from behind the goals at the punt road end and felt Jordan struggled, would like Smith to start, maybe Jordan sub. Might have missed some good work of Jordan- so will watch replay first before locking that in.

I really rate jj, but i reckon he gets lost a bit when resting forward. Just doesn't look comfortable as a half forward.

Which isnt a problem if he is a full time mid.

But he cant be a full time mid if/when koz gets decent midfield minutes because he had to go forward to cover koz - or at least he did today (i guess he could also go to the wing to cover bench time for langers and hunter).

When clarry comes back in it may well be at jj's expense, and I'm starting to think he might struggle to cement a spot in the starting 22 this season.

Well our forward line problems still persist.

But the positive is that Kozzie is back in form. Chandler too.

I think I was a bit hard on Melksham not being consistent as he's probably exhausted himself the week before.

Not sure if Bbb gets another gig. Smith or Grundy perhaps.

From my understanding, Grundy didn't kill it at Casey and Smith was hot when subbed on.

So probably Smith. Ideally Grundy comes back in.But you have to reward form.

Still want Petty forward. It's obvious that Tommo needs to play so it's win win.

Smith will have to get a game soon. The coaches don't like letting them play sub for too long as they lose match fitness. I expect Smith will get a whole game and most likely in the ones. Mind you, playing less game time probably helps with his propensity to get injured.

Hunter has been diabolical for weeks, he needs a fair amount of time at Casey. Maybe Jordon back to the wing, because he is completely ineffective as a central midfielder. I'd still love to see Dunstan get a chance whilst Oliver is out.

I thought McVee may have been wearing concrete boots yesterday. He has had an excellent season, but looks due for a rest. Bring in Hibberd for him this week and reassess.

I really like Woewodin as a player, but he's just not getting enough football. Time to bring Harmes back.

As much as it would be great to see Brown taking 8 marks and kicking 5 goals, that's just not where he is at right now. But our forward line looks significantly better with him in it. We do need another marking option, because it is asking too much of Melksham to be that player consistently.

I think the extra tall forward such as Brown is doing wonders for our forward line. He goes on long leads and his height and stretch worries the opposition. My main issue with Brown is that he’s terrible once the ball hits the ground. Schache is better at the ground level stuff and is a better field kick but I think the coaches really value Brown’s craft and experience which is what Grundy and Schache do not have.

People forget about Grundy playing as a forward. It should not happen. He will be at Geelong next year.

More likely Port for a trade with Mitch Georgiades.

So we are going to trade an AA ruckman for an average forward who has done his ACL? Yep that sounds like exactly the sort of thing we’d do.

Hunter does one thing very well. He gets the ball a lot. You cannot do anything if you don't have the ball.

Love Brown, great Dee premiership player who used to be at some other club but seems to me he struggles to see games out given his physical problems. Don’t think Smith is a replacement, just not tall enough for the key position and he is after all the Super Sub. Really don’t know who else though, Grundy not a forward, Schache despite going well in the twos just not in favour, TMac injured and it’s maybe past time for him, Petty forward seems a thing of the past despite Goody being hot on it mid season.

Personally I would like Tommo to stay in and Petty up forward but realise that ship has sailed.

Not sure it has Deemee. I would not be surprised if Petty has another weeks rest. Finals are not far away now. We need him cherry ripe.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
