Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

It’s only 4 weeks ago Cornes was saying how Larkey, Sheezel, Wardlaw may not want to stay at North if they didn’t show improvement. Wardlaw signed an extension later that week.

Things are never as bad as they seem and never as good as they seem. I hate West Coast but they are a proud club with a lot to offer in terms of facilities and off field benefits. They are rock bottom now and will be down for another year or two, but they will bounce back and be pushing for finals in 2026ish. Ginbey is a Luke Hodge type leader, Allen is similar and now they have fully committed to the rebuild they will unfortunately work their way back

Agree, WC is a rich powerful club that can provide lots of off field opportunities. The lifestyle in Perth has broad appeal too.

Unfortunately they'll be back with a vengeance - enjoy their suffering while it lasts.

I have mates who are struggling to deal with their current plight and they say you must be loving this, maybe I’m just older, but in early 2021 I made a decision to not worry about other teams and not to bath in their misery. I thought let’s just focus on the Dees and we all know how that ended.
I have commented to them that they need a reality check, they have missed finals for 2 going on 3 seasons, 5 years since they were premiers and have played finals for 26 of their 33years of existence.

I explain what it was like following the Dees from 1980 to 2020

If I was Harley Reid I'd go there in a heartbeat. He's confident he'll make it, he'll be an immediate hit playing in front of adoring fans and be at ground zero for their rebuild. King of Perth.

Fair point. North made the (pragmatic) call to trade whilst a good deal was available. I get the feeling JHF & his management leveraged the potential value drop and weaker hand given the single yr remaining on the contract.

100% agree.

Being a number 1 draft pick outside of Victoria would be relatively stress free, even if they do eat each other alive in the WA media.

The eagles mids might even rediscover some form when an 18yo kids comes in and runs rings around them from day one

Mentioned this in another thread, but WCE could consider what North did last year, and doing that with North this year.

Swap pick 1 for 2, 19 and Norths future 1st. North back themselves to improve next year

Reid alongside Cheezle and the Warlord, with their other up-and-coming mids would not be dissimilar to us 7 or 8 years ago with Clarry, Trac, Viney etc

WCE perhaps get Duursma, one of the local WA boys and a high pick in 2024

Win/win???

That's only because he only had 1 year to run though. If he still had 3 years to run it may have been a different story and different attitude.

But that is how the system works. If you’re a top draft pick, then by definition you will end up at a lowly club.
Imagine if Trac or Oliver said “nah mate your club is a mess I don’t wanna go here”.

Trac literally said this..

Probably not to this extent but pretty much told GWS that he did not want to go interstate if he slipped that far due to having close family links in Melbourne.

Obviously it was well known Trac was pretty immature at the time but I do know this was a fact for sure.

Instead of trading for Harley Reid, is there a chance of prying Oscar Allen out of there?  Offer two first rounders for him maybe other later picks involved.

if there is a chance to nab someone like that who may not be enjoying his footy atm, he would it our forward line perfectly!

I heard that Barass may be gettable. Will allow Petty  to play permanently up forward alongside JVR and the 2nd ruck. Petty can then swing back to defence when May is done which hopefully is when Jefferson is potentially ready.

I reckon he's off to Sydney.

I don't think WCE are best placed asking for pure picks in return. They are in the dire list space that Melbourne was back in 2013 when we traded:

Out: 2, 20, 72; in: Tyson, 9, 53

I wonder if we trade out: Fremantle pick ~ pick 9, Fremantle 2nd ~27, James Harmes, Adam Tomlinson and Bailey Laurie.

Trade in: pick 1.

If I were WCE I would need veterans who can play now and shield some of their youngsters coming through, high upside youngster and picks...they have a lot of dead wood on their roster.  Then you bring in James Jordon. It may look like we are giving up fringe players, trash for treasure but Our 24-31 players are very strong and would be getting games at most other teams in the comp.

AFL need to also step in and give them Gold Coast compensation with an extended rookie list and picks as they are where we were 10 years ago.

meth coke won't want to take on those contracts, or those players

they'll want three first rounders for starts. possibly two second rounders as well

i personally think if lamb and taylor believe reid is worth 2023 freo 1st and 2nd round, mfc 1st and 2nd round, 2024 mfc 1st round, then we might as well do it

an injection of pure top end class is needed for our mid / fwd combination

I agree. Unlike Melbourne, they aren’t in a position where they have to be seen as being competitive in order to survive.
As the richest club in the AFL, they can rebuild properly with top end talent and not back fill their list with just ok players to stem the bleeding.
Not to mention that they won a flag not that long ago. They aren’t exactly in the midst of a 57 year ****show.

Oscar Allen is a young talent you build your side around and is contracted until 2025. We'd be better off looking at the older players like Barrass or Yeo who may not want to go through a full rebuild to see out their careers.

And no way they should be getting list concessions 5 years after winning a flag. They'll sort themselves out in time.

3 first round and 2 second picks would be close to the biggest trade haul ever, including WC trading Judd and Geelong trading for Cameron. If Lamb and Taylor think Reid is worth that, he better play 300 games and win multiple brownlows.

I'd we want Reid we really need freo to give us a top 5-6 pick to be in the conversation. We couldn't even trade into pick 5/6 with 3 first rounders last year.

Agreed. There’s first round picks and then there’s first round picks. Early first rounders are much greater opportunity to get a club changing superstar like Trac or Clarry. Late first rounders and you hope for a Bowey type who could have a good career but far less likely to be a superstar and change a clubs fortunes. We tried trading three first rounders in the teens for pick 6 last year and got knocked back. We’d need a top 5 pick out of Freo to have any chance to move up the draft board for Reid or an elite talent.

Talk of chasing Oscar Allen is misplaced also. Contracted for another two years. West Australian local lad. Already on $800,000-$850,000. His next contract will be a million plus that we likely don’t have and we’d be convincing him to move away from home too. More chance of landing a King brother or basically anyone else in the league!

they are not needed in our line up though.  Why not go hard at a player Like Allen and try get him.  Sure Yeo and Barras would make our side but in what capacity? especially Yeo

A fit and firing Yeo in his prime was one of the best half backs going around. Often was at the heart of most Eagles plays. If you could guarantee his fitness and initiative, you’d trade a 2nd round pick for him.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
