Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

The 2022 bombers are the 2019 Demons, they've come off a finals campaign with blistering offense, but average defense exposed by the best sides, have misread where they're at, and now they're going to need to re-set and get their defending a bit stronger before they're a serious finals threat.

We won two finals before crashing out in the Ptelim; they crashed out immediately.

It will take them much longer than it took us to make a GF let alone win it.

For any of us that for so long had to hang our hat on that one measly win at Windy Hill where Billy Bennett went nuts isn't it a delight to see their fans so demoralised at the thought of facing us this week. I hope we don't let them down.

I'm not hoping for much, just a 149 point win.

I am amazed how Petracca and Oliver and Gawn with a bit of Fritsch, Brown and Jackson has so many footy watchers in awe of us. But the aura is just that.

We are a system team - the cream on top is why we are the best but it is because we have this system that allows Trac or Oliver to look so dominant.

So anyone is a chance (maybe not NM) if they bring similar commitment and we are slightly off.

Hate to be boring but there it is.

On merit we're a 6 goal+ better team...

My MFCSS unfortunately still runs deep - this feels like a danger game. If we bring the sam intensity as the GC game - lookout game on and... who knows

These [censored] seem to get the better of us... maybe I'm still scarred from Hird pulling 2 out of his butt in the last minute to beat us in 99 (or 2000 or around then anyway) but I hate them with a passion and would rather be weary of them than overconfident and only bring 70% effort

We've actually won 4 of the last 5 against them.

The bombers are a still a few years off. and I don't think they have all the ingredients either. They lack quality senior players and more depth across the board.   Cox is no Jackson but still should be good

It is interesting how the thought of playing us seems insurmountable to the supporters.  we didn't even make the finals in the last two years prior to the flag.  that's what great teams do, they beat teams before the game starts.  have a look at Trac and Max and put your head down

It is so sweet

We should not have any sympathy for Essendon.

They have humiliated us many, many times before. They should be despised with a passion!

In recent memory losing to Essendon by 18 points in round 3 back in 2019. I remember a horrible, mean old man who was an Essendon supporter laughing at us and saying we would be wooden spooners (he wasn't off by much to be brutally honest).

Then there was the utter disgrace and ineptitude of losing by 148 points to Essendon in round 2 back in 2013. Mark Neeld had well and truly had his papers stamped to be sacked after that.

Then there was the 5 point loss in the elimination final to Essendon way back in season 2004. Ironically the last time Essendon actually won a final.

Plus who could ever forget the belting we received when a juggernaut Essendon side beat us in the 2000 AFL grand final by 10 goals (60 points). Luckily I don't have nightmares about that horrific day anymore (breaking our Premiership drought in 2021 cured that!).

Lastly there was the massive embarrassment of losing to Essendon by 1 point in round 6 of 1992 when Melbourne were up by 47 at the start of the last quarter!

I don't forget those painful losses and neither should any other Melbourne supporter.

Fingers crossed the Demons players are focused on the job at hand against Essendon for this Friday.

We’ll see. We beat them in a great Friday night game at the MCG in 2019. Lost narrowly in a dead rubber game for both clubs (at Metricon) in 2020 and then pressed them deep into the last quarter in our game last year before eventually going down by 11 points. Some questionable decisions also went their way in the second half. We know they’re a terrific team but I don’t think we are going to be overawed.

Appropriately, that Friday night game dropped us to 0-3. Would be nice to repay the favour.

Also lol @ 2020 being a dead rubber game for us when we had to win to stay in the finals race.

Sounds silly, but I was only 11 at the time, and that 1992 game hurt almost as much as the 87 prelim and more than the 88 GF!

I reckon The Casey players from last weekend should all play and give our 23 a good "rest" - like they can sleep in, or enjoy some gardening at home...... That way we can expect to win by a reasonable but fair number such as 40 points rather than the commented 60 -80 points as mentioned here  which would be so embarrassing for the Gliders. Let's be fair folks...

Unless it’s a final - we have not been putting away sides.

Some if you look like sheep standing on their hind legs with your confidence of a win and a blowout one at that.

We have Casey’s backline featuring Steven May, we are losing the clearances around the ground like we always do, and if we can’t turn the ball over quickly we are kicking to Gawn, Brown and TMac all going up at once because of reasons.

The pessimism isn't my editing.

From 'Bomberblitz':

  • I think the Dees will be a bit flat coming back from the GC on a six day break. If we bring today’s effort, we should give a good account for ourselves, but the Demons will do enough and win by 3-4 goals
  • We haven’t been 0-3 since 1967
  • we are going to get completely obliterated no matter who we put on the park.  heppell on fritsch is the stuff of nightmares
  • For gods sake, can someone please just start a COVID outbreak at the hanger so 38 players are in health and safety protocols and the AFL call the game off?
  • Going to be brutal. Oliver and Petracca are going to get 50 touches each and Brown will kick 10.
  • merrett out only takes the margin from 60 to 80 points
  • Who cares whos in…we have a bottom six that should be in the vfl but are playing so…Dees will smash us.
  • With our unbelievable decision that we are so good we don’t need to use taggers, Petracca must be really looking forward to this week’s game. His main concern would be leather poisoning.
  • ANNOUNCE HS PROTOCOLS FOR MELBOURNES BEST 22.

The most hopeful comments:

From 'Bigfooty':

  • Just want to see us be competitive and have someone run with Petracca. Cant believe Truck's comments about not tagging Neale. Horror draw to start the season but doesn't seem we were ready for the season anyway.
  • There's a real stench about the team, which to me, has come out of nowhere given how positive last season was. Old habits are back, unfortunately. This will be a big loss and will effectively kill off the season
  • It’s the stench of having sky high expectations, the second most difficult fixture in the league, and a team full of babies expected to pull off a miracle.
  • I think we’ll go okay this week. I kind of hope shiel is out for another week so we get to see a pure midfield game from caldwell. If lever doesn’t play again this week the game will be a lot closer than many predict.
  • I'm not all doom and gloom like it seems so many others are here, we're still a very inexperienced team who only beat one top 8 team last year, playing Geelong, Brisbane and Melbourne to start the year is no free ride even though the effort in Round 1 was poor. Like it's been mentioned already we won several key areas on the weekend so if we bring a similar output and convert a bit better there's no reason we can't compete and finish within 5 goals.

To their credit I didn't see any disrespect.  Probably just grudging respect.  A bit of humour here and there was refereshing.

They sound similar to Dees supporters a few years ago :- a bit worn down after years without finals

Also think it’s a big danger game.

The fear of going 0-3 will have their intensity up. If we are complacent, could drop this one.

Agreed.

Being The Hunted, many clubs will see their game vs the dees as their GF so will be capable of anything on the day.  Coaches will plan more intently than usual and gee up their players to 'take on the best'.

Last year it was the lower teams that got us and with they added 'this is our chance to shine' incentive, they can get us again.

Eventually we have to lose. We are on another winning streak and we’ve seen how hard that is to maintain. We aren’t in great form. To me we are just going and doing the bare minimum to win games. That’s a perfect position to be in this early in the season, but it also makes us much more vulnerable to dropping “easier” games.
You can’t be up all the time. Maintaining a level of intensity that requires winning every week is impossible. Clubs will come out hoping to catch us on a down week so they can take a big scalp. This could be the week.

My intel says that all is not right at Bomberland. There is a bit of turmoil behind the scenes with a push to get Hirdy back amongst other things (before he takes the GWS job..). Players unhappy about game plan etc

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
