Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Just my opinion, no one is right or wrong here. I love Pickett, but Bedford showed more on the night. Pickett will probably keep his spot but it would be nice if Bedford was given the chance ahead of him for once. A bit of competition is healthy.

You absolutely play Pickett unless he is not fit to play. Just as we get excited whenever he gets near the ball conversely the opposition gets extremely worried. His pressure alone is valuable!!

Hmm... possibly, pressure is one thing, but you have to get the ball.

Ok. Thanks for clarifying.

My opinion is that his job is to apt pressure - real and perceived.

Create contests.

Disrupt.

Trap the ball in the front half. Gut run up and down the ground.

He does all of those things week in  week out.

It might sound funny, given back in the day we measured performance on kicks and goals, but any possessions and goals kozzie are icing on the cake.

So personally I'd pick him.

And on the question what goody will do, it is inconceivable kozzie will be dropped for Bedford this week.

Kozzie will play every game this year barring injury. Critical to our chances of going back to back.

If we bring in Weed or Majak, we are too tall.

One thing about Gold Coast is they look quick. Max, Jacko, TMac, May, Tomlinson, BBB, and Weed/Majak is one tall too many.

I thought Jordon was solid without being spectacular. Deserves another go.

After watching both the seniors and reserves the team I would like to see is:

B: Lever, May, J.Smith

HB: Brayshaw, McDonald, Bowey

C: Langdon, Petracca, Sparrow

HF: Neal-Bullen, Jackson, Spargo

F: Fritsch, B.Brown, Pickett

FOLL: Gawn, Oliver, Viney

IC: Hibberd, Harmes, Jordon, Bedford

SUB: M.Brown

EMERG: Hunt, Tomlinson, Dunstan

Don’t see Lever coming in just yet - but we’ll see - but otherwise why change the backline? Including TMac there? They conceded 3 goals after half time to one of the best attacking teams in the comp.

But I am a doubter about Jordon - tries hard, yes, but a strictly average player and worse: he is a slow thinker. For me

Out   Salem, Jordon

In      Bedford and either Weed or Majak

I’m inclined to agree. Based on Wednesday, l think Bedford has far more class and speed. If they play,  Tmac goes down back. (Interesting he commented yesterday that he hoped he is not forgotten as a back) and he shouldn’t be either given his recent form, then l think it would be time to unleash the Weid. If he gets back to top form would be a huge bonus for us.

If Hunt plays we have 8 backman we usually go with 7. I think we have a better balance with Jordon in.

Don't worry about Kozzie folks.

He seems to be trying a little too hard, he just needs to slow down a fracture and compose himself. When he does he'll clunk his marks and find more ball. I think he's a generational player who will show his full worth once he clicks into form this season.

I think this is it, I get the feeling small forwards that come on quickly get this rush of blood where they suddenly feel they need to keep doing the spectacular. He’s still laying crucial shepherds and important pressure. He was so close to taking MOTY and he looked super lively early on.

I have faith he’ll come good again, and you look at how the boys got around him at the end, he brings an important energy to the team.

Salem for Lever, possibly JJ for Bedford.

Give Kozzie some time in the middle.

I think Hibberd only comes in for an injured defender (Salem) or an omitted midfielder.  I can't see any of the fit defenders that played against the dogs (May, Bowey, Hunt, Smith or Tomlinson) getting dropped.

If we only play 6 pure defenders again and Lever is fit, then Lever IN, Salem OUT.  If Lever isn't right, then Hibbo IN, Salem OUT.

If we revert to 7 pure defenders (which was our preferred in 2021) and Lever is fit, then Lever and Hibbo IN, Salem and perhaps Jordan OUT

(paging @webber is that a thing?).

Yep. Muscle ‘fibre-typing’ is unique to us all, in respect to relative proportion of slow-twitch and fast-twitch (broadly aligned with endurance and power respectively….Gary Ablett senior was high % fast-twitch, our own Robbie Flower slow twitch). JJ will never be a muscly unit, but probably somewhere in the middle, in the AFL physique Goldilocks zone. I suspect a couple more years (50-80 game region) and nobody will be talking about his lack of strength, or physicality. He’s a hard nut, and smart, as you say. A nuts and bolts natural footballer for mine.
On Salem’s knee, I’m interested to hear the outcome. The ‘incident’ seemed pretty innocuous, and his knee was already strapped to protect the medial ligament (it doesn’t really, but ‘feels good’). I couldn’t see a significant rotational component, or hyperextension, or even a lateral force (knee pushed inward). His knee looked very ‘un-swollen’ on the bench, which is always a good sign. I’d be very surprised if it’s his ACL (but never shocked), but unsurprised if it’s an aggravation of a niggly MCL (medial ligament) or a medial meniscal tear (relates to the MCL). Fingers crossed.

In your team, we only have 8 backmen if Hunt plays if Brayshaw remains at half-back. have you considered moving Brayshaw back to the wing in place of Sparrow, who could go to the bench in place of Bedford or Jordon?

The question really becomes, should Hunt play instead of Bedford or Jordon?

Question without notice guys......

What would it take for Luke Dunstan to get into the starting line up and realistically how likely is it that Dunstan will be picked in the first 6-8 weeks ???

You've got TMac in the backline.  Yes he was moved there last match and did well but take it to the bank that he won't start there next week.

edit: changed side to backline

Unless there's lots of injuries in the midfield, I think one of Oliver, Viney or Trac would have to be out and Dunstan in great form in the VFL.  I think it's unlikely he would come in to play a wing or flank so he would have to be ahead of Sparrow, Jordon and Harmes as an inside midfielder to get a gig.

Unless he's absolutely dominating in the VFL, I'd say it's very unlikely he plays in the first 6 rounds

I am not advocating Kozzie out. That said, he gave away two frees while chasing (down field and in the back). We need him to be more disciplined (i.e. make them hurt as much as possible but stay within the rules). This was a big improvement in his game last year versus 2020 and he needs to be reminded.

If Harmes has another poor game then Dunstan deserves an opportunity. Sparrow also didn't do much on the night and was caught out a few times around stoppages, but he's obviously highly rated amongst the coaching staff.

He was brought in for this exact reason to make sure our midfielders aren't getting complacent.

I'd like to see him get an opportunity very soon.

Dunstan or anyone else for that matter deserve nothing unless they are playing very well at Casey

My understanding is that he was underwhelming and obviously hasn't shown anything so far to deserve a senior game as he wasn't even given a run in the practice games

Both Harmes and Sparrow have a few credits banked - they would need to put in a couple of shockers for Dunstan to even enter the discussion

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
