His defensive mindset, awareness and positioning on the wing got better as the year went on. Early on it seemed he wanted to play his game but in a different position, but from about mid year it seemed to really start clicking for him in how he should be playing his role and how important the defensive aspect was including things like spoils, intercepts and 1 percenters.

I would love to see you say that all to Angus, Face to Face…

”Excuse me Mr Brayshaw, I don’t think your midset or positioning is correct…”

(At this point the side is undefeated….)

Ugh, not sure why I am weighing in. But I'm so unclear how you got to what you did with @Lord Nev's post.

Perhaps the more useful conversation with Angus would be - ' Gus, how did you see the first half of the year, playing the wing role?'

I've only heard him speak limited, I am assuming he would give an honest answer, so, what would your take on his 'honest' answer to the question be @Sir Why You Little?

Mate, you are clearly trolling now. Surely.

Just so I am clear, do you have a belief that every individual who played in the 9-0 bracket, had no capacity to improve in their role?

Or... is it just Gus who was blindingly brilliant and without peer?

or !!

EO: Gus, how'd you rate your first half of the year on the wing?

AB: 9-0 tells the story Onion!  🤣

The comment was made that Brayshaw’s role on the wing was not so important and that he is easily replaceable if he decides to leave.
i vehemently disagree with that stance and think Gus was one of the main reasons we won the Flag.
He didn’t just start playing well in the back half of the season

Teams could not mount attacks from Half Back.
Stats are so overrated

The Scoreboard is the ultimate judge.
Trolling LN Haha that is humorous

So that's all due to Gus, and not our All-Australian filled backline?

Perhaps you are getting confused with another poster??

Ps...the scoreboard is not the ultimate judge of how one individual in a system has performed...but I guess what you are saying is, if we win...the individual performance levels don't actually matter to you - result was achieved..so...tick!

I guess this is really a conversation about being nuanced vs inexact in how we see things.

Have a good day!

How could anyone confuse LN with anybody else on here?

How many goals were scored through the Brayshaw Wing in 2021?

Very Few.  He had a very good year

That is the ultimate measurement i look at, not pretty, not flashy, but very effective

I have watched the Grand Final and in the 3rd quarter his 2 way running was exceptional he stopped Schache from taking a mark and punched the ball later in the back pocket created a exit target for May on numerous occasions.

He did his job very well and got the rewards, he probably could play in the centre if the club can find a winger to replace him and he would repace Sparrow in the midfield but at this stage he is a winger and he has accepted that is his role at present.

I would love if the match commitee tried Rivers in that role against Carlton next week.

Melbourne last year tried to get Issac Smith but to play his role allowing Brayshaw to play a central midfield role but it did not happen so the selectors decided to use the next best player who played 25 games as winger.

For what it's worth I actually want Brayshaw to say 'Demon17'. But as @Hannibal Inc. has already said, we don't want to be paying too much in retaining good role players like Gus who are easily replaceable.

I do agree with this somewhat, I thought Gus was one of our most important players in the round 10 win over the Dogs - they just couldn't switch to the "fat" side to get their ball movement going.

Our Wings we’re unpredictable, so oponents had no idea how to attack.
each wing was vastly different, but just as difficult to play.

Very important…

I’m not so sure that Gus would be suited in the midfield the way the game trending.

he’s neither the explosive away from the contest mid (Oliver and Petracca) or the big bodied bull (Viney and Sparrow- the way he is “growing”). You need these types of mids, and this is why we blew the doggies off the park - despite the fact that they probably have more top-end midfield depth. With rucks like Gawn and Dogga as well, we can put teams away in 15 minutes, and I don’t think anyone can really match this. No surprise kozzie getting a bit of midfield time as he can pinch hit for one of the explosive mids.

Gus really doesn’t fit into this mix, but his game sense and gut run means he is suited on the wing despite a lack of pace.

no doubt one of the lower teams will offer him more money and midfield time.

I suspect this contract delay is more about seeing what is left in the tin at the end of the year and whether there is better visability about future salary cap limits etc

Given the team culture we have, it wouldnt surprise me if some of the high paid stars took a small cut if it meant keeping one of their best mates - if it came down to this.

We should also stop thinking the wing is a demotion. It suits Brayshaw’s overhead marking game. He still attends stoppages and since when is getting the ball out in space a bad thing?

I really want to highlight this. The media and to a certain extent the umpires seem to have decided that there is some kind of positional hierarchy where midfielders are on the top and every other position below. The all Australian team is stacked with out of position midfielders as the selectors try to get them all in. The Brownlow goes almost exclusively to midfielders. Now we have this narrative that playing on the wing is a demotion from being in the square for the bounce.

Mostly it is systems based teams who win flags, only systems based teams win multiple flags. For a system to work you need ALL areas of the ground playing their part, they are all critical. The all Australian selectors should recognise the best player(s) in each position.

Whether someone is critical to the club’s success is not based on what role they play, it is based on whether we have someone else who can do that role as well. Watching Gus at the practice match reminded me of how much you miss when you watch on TV. He is just constantly roaming up and down that wing, holding his width, closing out the fat side of the ground and moving to be an outlet when we get possession.

I personally think Gus is critical to us, but what I am really trying to push is that everyone is too focussed on the guts. We should be giving more recognition and glory to the ruck, the wings, the forward and back flanks, etc.

edit: fast should have been fat

Agree, how many times do you see the opposition try to switch the play and he's always there to spoil.

Ultimately it will depend on what he wants out of his career? Team success or personal accolades? If he ends up a multiple premiership player playing on a wing is that preferable to playing midfield in another unsuccessful side? There's role players in successful sides like the Lions & Cats dynasties who could've moved to play greater midfield minutes at other clubs but I think they'd be satisfied with the choice to stay at those club's. Even a guy like Ablett, moved for money but I wonder if he regrets the decision had he stayed at the Cats he could've been a 4 time premiership player (they would likely have won 2013 had he stayed) and be seen as undoubtedly the greatest player of the modern era. Yeah you need to think about money and your own development but ultimately down the road I think players appreciate their legacy more if they play in successful sides.

Seeing the way he spoke about the club after the GF with Garry I just can't imagine him leaving but stranger things have happened I guess.

Yes, but only skin deep.

Niall in the Age made a really good case for Angus to leave the MFC.

It is not just about money.

It is a short window as an AFL player. Does a really talented player want to be remembered as a bit player? Angus could walk into many teams and into their midfield and get close to a Brownlow medal.

Or he could stay at the Dees and potentially get another couple of premiership medals.

If Angus was my son, I would be urging him to leave.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
