Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Am I allowed to say who I think is good?

Luke Hodge is sensational in special comments. Very easy to listen to and does not seem to let his call be affected by the hysterics of the other commentators.

Brian Taylor is a disgracefully poor commentator. Needed to be said again.

A throw back to Sam Newman model of special comments person.

Tell it like it is...hardly, he has no idea what it is he's watching.

All the buzz these days is coaching succession planning but channel 7 have clearly neglected a commentary succession plan post Bruce and Dennis who were the best in the business.

The fact the Friday night footy is headed up by 2 commentators that used to call the Sunday Channel 9 off broadway game in the early 2000's is a clear reflection of not planning for the future.

Channel 7 need to have a nibble at Anthony Hudson.

Similar builds, long hair, long sleeves and a 5 in the number, make it understandable to some degree.

Then again it is their damn job to know better.

Imagine one of those peanuts calling a horse race.

Jockeys have the same build, all wear silks (that often look similar eg the Godolfin blue) and all are riding horses that with the odd exception look much the same.

And jockeys don't have big bloody numbers on their back!

Just getting that out of the way coz chances are someone will want you hanged, drawn and quartered for that mistake.
Soz, just noticed it’s already been pointed out.

Well go figure. If Mark's doing ABC commentary, including pre-match, I'll always listen. Of course he'll stumble and contradict occasionally. I'd rather listen to his individual take on the game than the AFL endorsed blather spouted by most of the other commercial commentators. He's a breath of fresh air compared to them.

Can't stand it just like everyone else here. It's dropped in quality so much since I was a kid.

The Channel 7 commentators are briefed to dumb down the game and not get too tactical to ensure the game feels accessible to wider audiences – to its detriment in my opinion. You don't hear American football commentators leaving out all the technical stuff or Formula 1 commentators. Watching the Tour de France is only really possible because of the commentary (in my opinoin). It adds multiple other layers on top of what is hopefully already an interesting game.

Anyway, I watch the footy via the Kayo app on a Smart TV with the sound off and then listen to the SEN commentary via my iphone. It's really easy to sync them with Kayo as you can just pause for a second to let the radio catch up or fast forward when needed, etc. Replays I watch back with Ch 7 which by that point you can just laugh at the biases when they appear.

The one I hate (perhaps a bit irrationally) is when the umpire mic picks up something the umpire's said explaining their decision or just making their call and the commentator proceeds to say, "You heard the umpire", putting the viewer in one of two annoying positions:

#1 Yes, I did hear the umpire, thanks for redundantly pointing that out

Or, worse

#2 No, I didn't hear the umpire and now I'm left to wonder what they said because instead of using your commentary to summarise or (heaven forbid!) expand on what they said, you've instead utterly wasted that time with a statement that's utterly worthless.

Yes, if you're in position #1, it could be slightly annoying to have to listen to a repeat of what the umpire said if you've just heard it, but I'd hazard a guess that it would be MUCH less annoying than being in position #2 still with no idea what was said.

Also when one commentator repeatedly gets a player's name wrong within the game and apparently no one quietly corrects them off-air? Even though clearly the other commentators are all saying it correctly. Do they not have any quality control?

Case in point: how BT has always ALWAYS pronounced Salem "Sah-lem" not "Say-lem" like everyone else for some reason? And on one memorable occasion, "Slalom" and no, not even for some weak snow joke either. Gah!

Oh wait, and also the lengthy pause after Daisy (or anyone, but it's noticeable with her) says something intelligent and then the other commentator (BT mostly) basically goes, "Anyway...". No give and take, no acknowledgement except maybe a condescending "Good one". Double gah!

Random lowlight from the Channel 7 coverage of the Port game last night THAT DID MY HEAD IN #1:

Fritter thinks he has touched a ball, because he did, that Alir is paid a mark for. So assuming it is play on Fritter tackles Alir. Much to fritters dismay, the umpire gives a 50. Which was fair enough as a mark was called.

The commentators say as much. Play on. Nothing to see here.

Later, Kossie takes a nice mark. It may have been touched. Jonas  certainly thought so and tackled Kossie. Much to Jonas' dismay, the umpire gives a 50. Which was fair enough as a mark was called.

The commentators express amazement and surprise.

Watching THE REPLAY, which provided crystal clear evidence the 50 was there every day of the week, 'Hamish" opines Jonas was hard done by. WTF

DOES MY HEAD IN!!!!

Completely agree. I noticed that too. One passage of play where Port goaled they say 'Port just took the game on, they were probably a bit lucky with not getting called holding the ball but they need to continue to take the game on'. How about changing the narrative and saying 'Melbourne stiff by a terrible call there. The umpires need to look out for that but Port took advantage of a bad call and kicked a goal'.

I can't stand how they never address bad umpiring.

What about when their researcher stuffed up and thought Wayne Reid was a player as well as an ex-president? Assuming they mixed him up with Wayne Gordon. Not the worst thing Channel 7 has ever done but still a shambolic attempt at a tribute.

But for the rest of last night, any commentary box without BT is an improvement. I wouldn't pick McLachlan or Brayshaw at the top of the commentator draft but Taylor is such a buffoon that he brings everyone down with him.

I’m sure we’ve had some teams bad enough that the President has thought to pull in the boots and bring us a win.

God knows I have.

BT is obviously a boofhead and James Brayshaw's sshtick is well past its use by date. for me though the most beige and banal commentator is Cameron Ling. For the type of player he was I would have assumed a forthright, no nonsense style. He's the exact opposite. I've never heard a single insight pass his lips

Cameron "it'll all start in the midfield" Ling. Thanks captain obvious.

Yeh, Bring back Doug Heywood & Percy Beames with Alan McIlvray for special effects.

Eddis McEverywhere thinks he is broadcasting on radio whereas TV allows people to see the actual contest. WHere commentators  (the good ones) are handy when they present the wider picture that is not shown on our screens at the time i.e. when a side gets a really good ball movement down the ground. TV does not show that very often.

I love the old ABC days , just describing the play and not being too opinionated and cheesy with the jokes.

Why do I need anyone to describe the play? I’m watching on TV, I can see what’s happening.

Give me one footy lover who sounds good and knows all the players names, and one expert who might not be as polished but can add some genuine insight - ideally a recently out of the system coach.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
