WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JAKE BOWEY

Has a fair bit of ambition about his approach on the field, and the tools to be able to execute it; opportunity has knocked, and Jake’s ripped the door off the hinge. A little ripper!

How we have lamented our drafting, trading and player development program between 2005 and 2015. The amount of players we got wrong, and the high draft picks we burned or stuffed up.

Not now. Rivers, Jordon, Kossie, Jackson, Sparrow, and now Bowie.

He was super last night. A gut-wrenching brain fade in the last quarter (I reckon his face will be as red as his hair when he reviews that play one-on-one with Chaplin) but so clean, amazingly sharp on his feet, and works hard when he hasn't got the ball.

And after years of few players with top-end foot skills, we actually have another good kick!

Remember the good old days when we recruited elite kicks...but players who rarely got the ball in the first place? Good times.

Super impressed with a lot of things (shows dare, backs himself, thinks about what he's going to do etc), but above all his composure under serious pressure is really something.

Very excited for Bowey's future!

Great temperament. Serene and composed amidst the mayhem. Not even the hostile West Coast could rattle him.

I though a few games for experience and then Hibbo back into the side for finals but after last night I think he should stay in the team. What a find.

He’s so clean and is finding ball already. Had an amazing take at pace under pressure at one point. His kicking is delightful too. That pass inside 50 to setup Jackson’s mark and set shot was pure class - low, penetrating and perfect ball spin.

Love the kid. Just needs to stay healthy and he’ll be a ripper for us.

Bowey was playing the same way in the VFL, so it is great to see that he has been able to step up to the the increased pace of the game. He obviously needs to get stronger and is limited by lack of height, but the rest of his game is A-Grade.

I think Bowey will need to keep playing like last night to keep his spot though. Pig is still a good player and is more finals ready, even though he is not as quick or clean.

You can add Harrison Petty and Charlie Spargo to that list.

Both still only 21.

Everything about last nights game was stacked against him - The Eagles with finals on the line, their big bodies trying to physically intimidate us and the wet weather.

He just get's on with business and we look a much more settled side with another good ball user in the mix.

Been saying this since I first saw him train at Casey. Been a huge wrap for him ever since. Has played exceptionally well at Casey, but last night sheeit he was really very very good. Can see him playing 200 games and being better than Caleb Daniels who I rate highly🤩

As for Jake, I hope he plays out the year at Casey...

He's not ready for the step up yet, not strong enough to stick his tackles and gets pushed off the ball too easily.

Looks like he will be a player but give him time.

Bowey has made sure this aged terribly! Sound logic, but the kid is earning his spot.

And unlikely to lose it while he stymies the oppositions attempts to shut down our ball movement from the back half but focusing on Salem.

Bowey is a good kick, but doesn’t have the sublime skill of Addam Maric or James Strauss!

Nor the pace of Sam Blease.

And he’s not as hard as Tapscott.

He was great. My absolute favourite moment of last nights game was when Bowey got done for holding the ball and both May and Brayshaw made a point of running to him, helping him get up and telling him to keep taking the game on. I was very proud of the boys for that. That’s what gives me faith we are on the right track for the long haul.

Got me 'Mach', it was in April though'...I think I posted recently that we should bring him in on the changes thread.

Youthful enthusiasm, might blossom at the level and all that jazz.

Now that he is in he's going to be hard to move out on his form in both games.

It's funny looking over some old posts and cringing...I know when someone bumps a thread I hope I haven't said something dumb, shudder when I have, sigh of relief when I haven't.

I must admit to being surprised with timing of Bowser’s selection for R.20.  While Hibbo’s form had been below par for a few weeks, I thought his experience would see him hold his place for our finals campaign.  I’ve now revised that view.  Bowser has played like a seasoned player in both of his outings, and it’s hard to see him being dislodged on those performances.  An ‘inspired’ and ‘gutsy’ selection IMO.

I'm not sure this is going to such an issue with him - the reason being he has a good vertical leap. Unless he is caught out of position I think he has the ability to spoil most opponents and we have already seen he isn't shy to take or attempt a hanger

Arguably the best disposal skills on the list - I'd rate him ahead of even Salem because he has the ability to hit targets over greater distance

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
