Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JAKE BOWEY

Let’s not be too harsh on Sam Blease. Not his fault he was drafted in to a basket case. Don’t think any of the kids of that era stood much chance, honestly.

But yes, Bowey did make me think back to Blease. Probably just the red hair though. Blease was a bit bigger and had a fair bit more toe from memory.

Love that turn out of traffic though. Great agility, burst of speed, and the guts to try it in the first place.

I didn’t think we should have blooded any new players leading into September. Thank goodness I’m not on the match committee. 😅

Magnificent disposal skills and a head on his shoulders well beyond his 18 odd years (at least in a football sense). A huge tick for the recruiting staff!

I reckon we should be congratulating a few here. Obviously Jake, but internally, not just the recruiters but the development team and clearly Troy Chaplin.

Does Jakes family pronounce their last name as bow (and arrow) ey which is how Gill pronounced it on draft night or Bough ey. Would realy like to have this sorted please and thank you.

His nickname is the giveaway. Bowser. If you know your Nintendo, that's how it's pronounced. @binman @george_on_the_outer @Demonland I know you guys were wondering this on the podcast last week.

This kids a jet.

I have no doubt he will just get better and better and develop into a Baschar Houli, Ahmed Saad, Caleb Daniel type.

Just what we need really.

Excellent game last night.  Foot Skills are what we need.
One moment of amnesia in the last quarter where he was unaware he was 10 metres out from goal and that an Eagles player was within 5 minutes. He will watch it and learn.   It was unfortunate given he’d had such a good game.

Exactly the opposite. He got a great lesson that cost nothing. Getting a lesson when you win is the best lesson you can get

He will still be able to play at AFL level because of his leap, pace and skill, but he would have greater scope if he was taller. He got out marked by Zac Langdon last night.

All players would have greater scope if they could

kick better, run faster, jump higher , etc

some players have all the attributes but have no idea how to actually get the ball (I will resist naming them)

Anyway he did get out marked once with a ball coming in pretty quick - I’d say there’s a good chance any of our other back six would have not spoiled that

I think you may be underestimating just how good Jake is - it’s clear to me he’s one of those special players that’s had a footy in his hands since a baby and everything he’s done so far has been to get the absolute best from himself on the footy field

I’m happy to admit I doubted his recruitment initially but after seeing a small sample at Casey and now his two senior games he is a very handy player and should be for many years to come

I also had doubts on Bailey Laurie so I hope he proves me wrong too when he gets a clear run with injuries

I have seen Bowey play 5-6 VFL games and have posted several times on here that he looks a future 200 gamer. And I was also calling for his inclusion in the AFL weeks before he debuted. I am a big wrap for the kid.

But he is not perfect and his obvious weakness is height and strength.

Have been pleased with what I have seen of the new draftee Jake "Bluey" Bowey from the Sandringham Dragons. I think his Father played a few games for the Saints?

Jake is clean with the ball and his handballing and kicking has been very good so far.

He got caught holding the ball against the Eagles due to the speed of the game but he will learn and adjust to that.

So far, he looks an exciting prospect and I am hopeful he can claim a NAB Rising Star nomination if he continues to provide standout performances.

Yes, his father Brett played 85 games for the Saints and debuted in the same match as Robert Harvey.

I'm glad he didn't get to 100 games and qualify his offspring for Father/Son selection!

Think he'll be a fan favourite for years to come. Someone with pace that can hit targets consistently is a rare commodity. Will find a home on the half back line but could settle into a wing role quite easily down the track.

WING now theres a thought, however I can see him further forward perhaps trying him in Spargo's spot

He has been fantastic so far. Soon enough the other clubs will have to decide, sit on Bowey or Salem?

I was thinking about this too.

Salem is so important to how we transition the ball that most clubs are now putting time into him.

All season they have been training bowser as a Salem style quarter back (though, unlike salem, he does the kick out at Casey).

Smart move to bring him in now. Coz as you say shut down Salem and we have the option of playing through bowser.

Apart from his kicking skills, the other thing he brings is some toe, meaning we have rivers, hunt and him for some strong overlap run and spread.

This is important because that sort of overlap is critical to how we generate scores. And in finals speed is super important.

Nintendo knowledge is only necessary if you're too young to remember his father playing. Those of us old enough to remember Brett Bowey, know it's pronounced Bough-ey. (Unless we're too old and have started to forget things...)

Having said that, I find pronouncing the name as "Bough-ey" to be unnatural. Maybe I grew up listening to too much David Bowie.

Yeah rivs is good, but out of the three I think Rivs is a more defensive minded player and more calculating with ball in hand. Bowey and Salem are more instinct.

Can't disagree with that. I could also see Bowey shifting to a wing over time.

Edit: meant to say Bowey to the wing, not Riv. Though that could also work!

That's because he has probably played about 99 % of his AFL career in defence.

But  when he has the ball he always tries to turn defence into some attacking move gif the team.

Even  if he only kicked the ball himself he can roost it an absolute 50m minimum mostly longer though sometimes over 60m.

Salo and Bowey are classy players and as you said instinct is very much part of their skill set which sets up play downfield in an attacking flair for our forwards mids and on ballers.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh

It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
