Well now the Jackson deal is done, we have nothing to gain by trading Weideman unless Essendon offer us something decent. Perhaps their second round pick to on trade for Grundy, or a third round to sweeten the Grundy deal or bundle up with our second round to move up?

We gotta get value for this deal. I know Weideman is a bits player, but we are so short on ruck and forward depth, and we have invested so many years into him. To lose him for a pick we won't even use, is just silly.

It doesn't make sense to trade Weideman out at this point for a 3rd rounder. We have lost M.Brown, Daw and Jackson so our talls department have taken a big hit. Adding Grundy is absolutely critical to our ruck depth but if we let Weideman go it means we need to chase 3 key forwards in a very shallow draft/delisted free agents. I'll back him in to stay!

We don't need Weid,  he isn't a fwd back up which he has proved and he isn't a proper ruck.

Every year back up rucks switch around, we will find one if we need one.  Some forward depth woukd be nice,  but Weids past seasons have shown us he isn't up to it.

If Ess are offering a 3rd rounder that's awesome as I'd say that's overs.  But he is contracted.

Out fwd stocks aren't as bad as people think. Brown, T-Mac, JVR, Grundy and Gawn.  They can't all play in one side,  another fwd would be ideal but they are light on atm.

Trade week for us supporters is a bit like my garage, full of things I don't use and if anyone offers me anything for something in there I say "tell em their dreaming".

I like Weeds and have always thought he will come good, the dilemma at the moment is he is stuck in the garage.

Daw and Brown were delisted players who never played. We can replace them with delisted players who never play! 

I agree we need to replace Weid with someone who we feel confident that they can at least contribute but that’s not a high bar. Options aren’t great so far but they’ll be someone.

I think we’d be best off replacing the 3 depth talls with 1 decent 3rd ruck and 1 decent 4th string forward and saving a list spot as well. Maybe save it for the preseason or mid season draft

Ignore the 2018 finals, people forgetting that Weid did indeed come good. Had a serious purple patch in the middle of 2020 before it all fell apart in Cairns, like our season in general. Then copped a pre-season leg injury for 2021. Between the ears with this guy. A fresh start might do him some good, but I doubt it. Just more pressure to perform. Basically the singular reason our list has been unsteady for the past few years. If he had fulfilled his potential we'd be in a fine position. 

Addendum: Jason Taylor once let slip that he wished he'd asked a few more questions of family etc. of one of our prime draftees. I'm certain that he was referring to Sam.

If we can get Essendon’s ‘22 3rd pick (rather than future 3rd) for Weid & say pick 54, by the time Brisbane match F/S bids pick 42 will come into late 2nd rd range. That’s probably as good a deal as you’ll get for him, but I’m also comfortable with Sam staying on.

Won’t be much pressure on Weid lobbing to Essendon to for a nothing pick.

I liked Weid’s 2020. I started this thread because I thought Ben Brown coming in would just get in Sam’s way. 

But those games were shorter quarters and the Weid got the prime full forward gig. Fritsch had that locked up by about round 2 2021.

Sam’s always looked promising when given a clean run and jump at the ball. Still drops too many but he can get his hands on them. Once it becomes about contesting from behind, stuck under a high ball or having to sprint clear to provide an option the Weid just doesn’t pick the drop of the ball or use his body efficiently. 

Our game plan and honestly most of afl footy is about contributing when it’s not just presented on a platter. Often we take that to extremes and ask our forwards to be superhuman but the reality is we want consistent contests and if that happens everyone will get their share of easier goals too.

Essendon are all about the platter. So he fits.

Sorry but I'm not including May. Petty is a swing option but these two are backman,  marking in the backline is alot different to the fwd line.  They have great "shock" impact through an in game move but give a team time to plan for them they will be less effective.

I am not a draft guru, but I got the impression that Alwyn Davey Jr was a good chance to be drafted in the 15-20 range, which is before Essendon's pick 22, so they may well lose that pick anyway, so maybe a three-way trade as follows:

Essendon receives Weideman, picks 40, 50 and 51 (via Pies) plus if necessary 54 from us to give them plenty of points to cover Davey.

Collingwood receives pick 22 (from Ess, which they want for Grundy) plus our future 2nd rounder (either ours or Freo) to compensate giving up all those third rd picks to Bombers.

Melbourne receives Grundy and keeps pick 27.

That gives us two solid picks in 2022 draft (picks 13 and 27) to go with Grundy and at the same time keeps our future first from Freo.

While on pick 13, I like the sound of Ben Allan's son - Ed Allan. He has pace which we need given we have just lost Hunt and Bedford.
