Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Well the consensus on here is that Goodwin deserves a lot of credit.  But prior to the game consensus on here also suggested it was the worst team we have fielded in years and no one seemed to be happy with the ins and outs with the exception of a few.  What is true is that it is the first time in a long time he seems to be credited with 'coaching' well.  I'd be satisfied with him if this acknowledgment was more of a weekly basis thing.   I think any fan would.  But good on him tonight if he managed to coach well.  Long may it continue.

I don't hate the guy, I've just been disappointed with him immensely as a coach.

MInd you though, it is also very possible that we did simply win because May and Trac were guns.  Plonking Goody in the genius coach box all of a sudden is not for me.

and i think that criticism has been fair. whats scary though is he had the ex saints coach helping him. lets see if he can repeat it.

Brown's leads are commendable - not for a goal shot, but to maintain possession and seek a pass/feed. Keep him there as he is going to clunk a few in a row, as well.

I like the way he gets up the ground. In that, he reminds me of Hogan. Very useful to our game style...

Quite a bit od parallax there - would add another 50% = 15 meters.

Still, can't expect a maggot to understand that, especially when no doubt instructed to add a bit to reverse kicks in the dying stages of games.

I still feel that 'no mark' for backwards kicks would move the game on and stop some of these negative tactics.

Totally agree. Those dinky kicks in the last minutes of the game starve any excitement out. One day we will be on the receiving end of kicking backwards and let hope the umpires maintain consistency.

Clearly a pre-game enema is on Jack Viney's "must do" list for our next game.  Maybe using Vicks vaporub as a lubricant may also add another yard or two to his pace?

Formline for each club's last five games (i.e. ignoring byes. Also ignores percentages because I don't have that data right here, and might well mean we're not 2nd...):

  1. Geelong - 5-0
  2. Melbourne - 4-1
  3. Richmond - 4-1
  4. West Coast - 4-1
  5. Brisbane - 4-1
  6. Port Adelaide - 4-1
  7. Collingwood - 4-1
  8. St Kilda - 3-2
  9. GWS - 3-2
  10. Fremantle - 3-2
  11. Bulldogs - 2-3
  12. Carlton - 2-3
  13. Gold Coast - 1-1-3
  14. Essendon - 1-1-3
  15. Hawthorn - 1-4
  16. Sydney - 1-4
  17. North Melbourne - 0-5
  18. Adelaide - 0-5

Whoops, St Kilda should actually be 11th on 2-3.

Ratten does himself no favours pouting about it. I thought better of him than that. It was a clear goal. Yes it was touched, after it crossed the line. He should accept it. The goal umpire was right there. Ratten's team also got the benefit of some doubtful free kicks. Funny how no coach complains about that.

Agree. I like Ratten but I think he has been sucked in by his player D Howard here. He has to claim he touched it to deflect from his mistakes. 1. he shouldn’t have stopped at the marking contest. 3 on 1, he should have sprinted straight to the goal line. 2 watch how easy he his taking it when the ball looks like it’s going through for a behind, he doesn’t really take off till the ball dog legs toward goal. Poor defensive effort.

The boys were quite composed during the last 90 seconds, I must admit when melksham gave away that free kick with about 14 seconds left in our forward half my MFCSS kicked in I did think about that final thrust forward a couple of years ago when the cats beat us at the cattery after the siren going end to end very quickly , btw after the umps missed a clear free to brayshaw iirc in our 50 !!!

surprised that this time Dougal Howard took so long to kick it and then Kent wheeled around and looked for a option before centring the ball with about 2 or 3 seconds left maybe less. Although I wouldn’t have been at all surprised if the ump plucked another rubbish 50m penalty out from nowhere for a phantom demon player running though the protected zone and Kent slotted it after the siren

petracca goal should be in GOTY contention but won’t because  of the rubbish goal line controversy - I guarantee the media outrage would not be there if it were the saints that did that to us , beyond ridiculous that this is still being talked about

Viney gets very, very, close to the protected zone on Kent's kick. I freaked out, I must admit.

Sheesh I dont care how defensive he is, if you get 4 possesions last week and 8 this week = 12 in two games as a forward mainly then he is not and never will be the answer! Period. Yeah I know he had a career best game a few weeks back but that would be his past present and future career best. He needs to go. Surely Harley Bennell gets a gig at this guys expense next week??

Because if Harley comes in at the expense of Spargo watch a similar outcome to the Dogs waltzing out of their backline in the 3rd quarter 2 weeks ago

Stats such as possessions mean little all they do is assist journalists who have no footy IQ in writing up the best players

That loss to the Cats that @Delusional demon 82 referred to above was the most devastating H&A loss I can recall - it gutted me.

If Kent had kicked the sealer on Saturday night after a 50 I think that would have topped it.

I think it was a goal, but quite frankly I'd be happy if it was touched before the line and the call was wrong and we still won.  It will become our Wayne Harmes moment when we go on to win this year's flag and the Saints miss the 8.

I really like some of the comments here about how we were able to beat a top 8 team without winning the inside midfield battle.

We won a structural battle with St Kilda, as we won despite giving them the stoppage and territorial advantage that we usually use to win games. We mostly didn't allow them to get in behind us and forced them to win contests against our excellent defenders in order to kick goals, and they weren't able to. We were really good at forcing them to go through our zone, rather than around it like the Dogs did and they simply could score because of it. They kicked a few goal because of rank turnovers but those , unfortunately, will happen in almost any game of football.

It's a good sign that we can stay in games (and win games) when we aren't playing our best. It's a big tick for the plan and the scrappy, blue collar team we played with.

Agree like a kick in the nuts, at the time it felt like it was going to cost us finals again, off the back of missing in 2017 by a bees [censored] - I was genuinely flat for about 24 hours after that loss. Still can’t stand Zach touhey ! The only redemption was that we then knocked those [censored] out in the elim final , but it probably cost us a top 3 finish with our high  % . Ah well maybe if we don’t lose that one we don’t hang on and beat west coast in rd 22 or even Adelaide the following week in which we almost fluffed a 20+ point lead in the last quarter.

Coaches votes

Very similar voting by the coaches this week.

10 Steven May (MELB)
8   Christian Petracca (MELB)
Jack Steele (STK)
Bradley Hill (STK)
Ed Langdon (MELB)
Enormously deserved by May

Leaderboard:
  • 75   Lachie Neale
  • 62   Christian Petracca
  • 59   Travis Boak
  • 58    Taylor Adams
  • 58    Jack Steele

Boak, Adams and Steel all have byes in the next few rounds so Petracca has a good chance of staying outright second.  Unlikely that he will catch up with Neale.

They don’t waltz out with Spargo there PSD? He is close to the worst tackler in the team.

I’m surprised more of that was spoken about on Sat night.

We’ve been pinged so many 50’s for encroaching the protected area with Melksham being the serial offender.

That Kent play was so close to resulting in a 50mtr penalty and possible loss.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
