Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

It's beautiful isn't it - how this beloved club allows us to have the full gamut of the human experience, not just year after year, not just round after round annually, not even quarter after quarter, but 6 minute intervals within quarters.

I for one wouldn't change that, for the consistent boooooring certainty that you would get with being, I dunno, a WCE, Geelong or Richmond supporter. :mahoney2:

I’ve had enough of the rollercoaster. Some boring certainty would suit me just fine.

Look of course I hate seeing us lose and I’d love to see us hold the cup before I die, but things are more important.
I haven’t been able to see my kids for 6 months. A friend died and I couldn’t go to their funeral. My job is on the skin of its teeth - very day to day.
So yeah as much as I love watching my team do well, it’s not the end of the world if they don’t. It’s a game. A fun game and a great distraction from the serious, but just a game.

I hear ya. forgive the off the cuff dodgy gag

Imagine if this club just won the games it should have won...  can see 2017 repeat

The reality is that in the last minute if both the Cats snd Lions games we had opportunities on the forward line and flummoxed BOTH.

Geelong  was the half hearted sling approach from Adam Tomlinson who with some cool heads up from say a Gawn Or Viney ( Jones was absent I think) could have seriously lined up that shot he got the distance easily and a point resulted. End of story.

Just as bad was the amateur hour ( minute) from Hannan and Fritsch. At just between the diamond and 50 m line Hannan had possession and kicks to Fritsch leading into his wrong pocket ( a common fault) and the ball is marked just over the line by Fritta. Then follows the 50 m penalty fir a slow handover Of the ball. A long shot fir a winning goal based on Fritta season long 19.20 and some outs haunting us. BUT all along Hannan missed Viney on his own clear of an opponent about 30 m out in front of goal who could have Iced the goal and time fir us to win.

So very Melbourne I can hear you say !!
Yes we have won 3 close games also plus Suns in last minutes but actually in those crisis minutes we have been pretty strong in many ways to hold on to a lead under fierce pressure from Blues Saints  and Giants.

Notably May has been a hero really in a stellar breakout season in Those  close wins where he had resisted a number of last quarter attacks and conceded more I 50's on the day and had equal or less In scoring shots.

Oh what could have been and the fiasco of Cairns to add insult to the story which Zi believe we would have won one or either of those games especially at the Gabba ( without wind) or jagged one at Metricon as well.

Nah it’s all fine. I have a thick skin and don’t take much on the internet seriously.

And, yes, a demon win is a panacea to cure all ills.

WE HAVE TO BEAT THE BOMBERS.  WE HAVE TO.

I couldn’t stand it if we didn’t. My bombers mates reckon Dees are soft and melt like butter. I really want to rip into them but have no confidence with our habit of losing the most winnable games or the most important.

Reckon of all the games we lost - the bulldogs is the one that hurts us most.  All teams had a flat spot in condensed fixture, we caught saints and collingwood in theirs and cope the heat in cairns in ours.

In both the Dockers and Swans games we kinda never looked likely.

But the Bulldogs game was after a 6 day (at least break), after a good win and we were leading at half time.  Then we played horribly for like 15 minutes.  Take that quarter out and we win that game

With the cats/lions games, I felt we were outplayed so the result would have been a bit flukey

does no one remember 2016 Round 2. I'm not even confident about beating essendon, let alone relying on other results. Please prove me wrong dees.

EJ dont disagree with you at all and we would be in the 8 safe with one more win and win on Sat ie 10-7 not 9-8.

But 3?points is so bliss with late opportunities I did feel that we were not really entitled to lead at half time as we hadn't played well.

But I thought  we may have improved after half time  and gone away for say a 3 goal win.

Prob Ssints  have Flatlined in last 4/5 rounds so that win is nit surprising as they lack A graders  they the Dees often lose because of. (Bont vs Bullies)

I tHinkGWS was flat but have been fir a while now!

Lets hope Freo and GWS are in top form this round!!!

AND we salute by say 5/6 goals or more!!

A lot of lament here about losing to Geelong and Brisbane in close games - the ledger in games under a goal is actually in our favour 3-2:

  • Carlton +1
  • Geelong -3
  • Brisbane -4
  • St.Kilda +3
  • GWS +5

It could very easily be 2-3 and we would be out of it now.

The Swans and Freo losses were extremely disappointing but there are reasons or excuses depending on your viewpoint.

The other club in a similar position to us without a bye - Essendon have gone from 5-0-2 to 6-1-9 since the compressed fixtures started, that's 1-1-7.  In the same period we've gone from 3-4 to 8-8, that's 5-4.  It's going to be interesting to see how we go against them this week.

It's also going to be interesting to see how the Dogs go vs Freo in Cairns off a day's less break.

It may be a boring opinion but I’m just wanting us to beat Essendon. Whatever plays out after that will be what it will be. I’d imagine that’s the mindset the team will be taking in as well.

I listened to the DeeBrief podcast and they were talking about going in with the attitude of “we must smash Essendon by X amount” could end up as a distraction. Just go in wanting to play the way we did against GWS and the rest will sort itself out.

If that happens we may well lose a match we might otherwise win.  Once players feel we won't smash them by enough they may start to throw in the towel and lose.

Zero doubt the players went into the match against Essendon in their ASADA/WADA ban year thinking “how much are we going to win by today”. We’ve had big losses over our years, that has got to be one of the most embarrassing days I’ve experienced as a Dees fan.

This is fair.

Putting close games to one side, we went 0-5 against the top 5. Our competitors for finals spots got over the line at least once in their attempts to beat the top 5 (Collingwood beat Geelong and drew with Richmond, St Kilda beat Richmond and Port, the Dogs beat West Coast, GWS beat Geelong and Richmond).

Our competitors also have losses to "weaker" sides (Collingwood lost to Fremantle and Essendon, St Kilda lost to Fremantle and North, the Dogs lost to Carlton, GWS lost to Adelaide, North and Sydney).

So we're not alone in dropping those two Sydney/Fremantle games. IMO, as frustrating as the Sydney/Fremantle losses were (Sydney in particular, given they're a bottom 4 side), it's the fact we didn't win even one of our five games against the top five that has us in this mess as much as anything else.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
