Vanders under done? Gees you can see selection hurting us this week, Jacko isnt quite ready, HB is still finding his feet after so long out of the game, Vanders I don’t think will have the tank just yet. Dons to run over us.

Picking the side is tough - you want players in form, but you also want players who can perform to the highest level.  On their day, Jones and Melksham (I won't include the talls as they play different roles) are better players than ANB and give us far more around the ground.  Nibbler might have kicked a few but he didn't do much else outside that, plus he was a late inclusion for Kozzie so he was out of the side really anyway.

You pick a side that you think will win you the game.  You don't always get it right, but I don't think it comes down to 'culture'.

Nibbler had far better forward stats, including score involvements and inside 50s, than both Jones and Melksham. He was also a key part of the play that won us the game.

The point is, we can't be selecting the team on potential rather than performance.

Yeah, but he also kicked 5 goals and not sure it's fair to judge his performance based on Carlton's highlights video.

I'm a big Jacko fan, but he should not be playing ahead of Weid this week.

It's an extremely small sample but so frustrating when players do it. Key forwards should be dominating in 14 a sides with all the space they will be getting.

Without seeing how he kicked his goals, we really can't judge his game. I remember he kicked 6 against Box Hill and I wasn't even remotely impressed as his opponent let him run and jump at every ball unimpeded which will rarely happen at AFL level. Getting the basics right, chasing etc. I would suggest would be more highly valued than kicking goals in these limited number games.

Can Vander's wrestle? Maybe throw him in the goal square if all else fails forward.?

Yep, fair, but I'm not using that as an example of an amazing game, I'm using it in contrast to our current impotent forwards. Weid can only play against what's there.

Not a terrible idea. Has shown he can get the pill and take a grab at half forward. Set shot Goal kicking like 85% of our side is below average

Maybe, will depend on what happens with the key forwards in our game and if there's another scratch match for Weid. (Is there?)

yes... but they don't count and they'll probably play him in the ruck like they did for the practice matches.

I think we all know that Jackson wasn't totally up to it last week,  but also that one game isn't enough,  when blooding a player, so I think he will get the 2 games alongside his mate Rivers.

With the same token,  I think they are making Weide mean,  and keen to get back to footy.

It also gives Tmc another week to find some form  before we bring Weide back.

The real problem is,  where do we put them when not in the team,  so they can develop better.?

Another interesting selected squad for this week. I find it hard to gain some sense of how they are going to play. If it is wet then we have a good mix of smalls to run and push the ball forward. But to me it looks as if we are lacking talls at both ends of the ground.

The 18 named in the team I assume are locks for the game with 4 of the IC to make the 22. Pickett we know will be there and that leaves 3 places. If it is definitely going to be wet then I would take 3 of Jones, ANB, AvB and Hannan on to the bench. Otherwise, Pickett plus Jackson to rotate through Forward/ruck, one of Smith/Hibberd and one of the others, probably Jones.

Some truth in this I think as we all saw what Weid could do when his focus was fierce. he's just not good enough to be able to play at this level without it. So the message may be, demonstrate you can bring that focus and energy as a regular part of your game ....or we dont pick you. Still makes me angry  that both Mc Kay and Curnow for the blues were picked after him in that draft  and both are seriously good. Im sure he'll get his chance  as Jackson doesnt look quite ready yet. But if Weid  gets a chance and he blows it we may just put a line through him and stick with getting games into jackson.

Isn’t that what we were thinking in 2018 when he’d had a similar lay off? He came in and tore it up. He’s worth the risk. I think we’ll see him and Pickett come in for Jones and Smith.

... without the team playing well around him.!    His great game came when he came into the team almost unexpected and into a form side, which he rose to excel within.

Which tall kid can come in and play really well,  when the team is being pilloried by opposition and supporters alike.  Anyone would be beyond nervous.

I think Weide will also get at least 2 games, same as Jackson has/will.

Bombers play small forward so would not be surprised to see Hibberd played ahead of Smith. I suggest Lockhart just needs a bit more work into him still.  I would personally play Weid particularly if it’s wet over Jackson but understand reinforcing his first game and making Weid work for a spot. They may not even take in LJ if it is as wet as expected.

Of those nameD on I/C from I think it will be Pickett, Jones, Hibberd, Jackson (if we shift for the wet AVB over Jackson),

So I'm a little annoyed about Weid not getting picked this week but it could be they are thinking about the conditions and one wrap on Jackson that I will give to the FD is that his is good below his knees.

But if Weid puts in another strong showing and gets overlooked again they might as well start to paint over his locker because whether we would want him to remain would be moot. He'd go.

As for who comes remains on that bench, personally my choice would be: Pickett, Jackson, AvB, Smith

ANB unlucky but Pickett is the similar sort of player and runs hard while providing a spark.

If AvB is fit enough to be picked as an emergency then he's fit enough to be played and Jones was poor last week, a swift kick up the bum could be good for the former captain.

Jackson stays as a back up ruckman and because this appears to be the route the FD are taking with him, he needs to show more than last week though.

Smith stays as another lucky one. I feel like conditions helped him to keep his spot, OMac can be quite lumbering in the wet, this gives Smith a second opportunity to prove he deserves a spot. If he keeps flying at the ball and TMac is having another stinker then I would really like to see them swap positions.

Selection panel has lost the plot.

If he’s not injured, Lockhart should be in. Bombers have lots of quick small forwards. We need smalls to lockdown in the backline.

Weid should be in for Jackson. Our tall forwards are uncompetitive. Jackson isn’t ready for AFL level yet. He needs time to develop his body and build confidence. Weid offers more at present. If he’s dominating at the level below and kicking bags off 5 goals, he needs to come in.

The selection panel need to pick the best team to win, not give games to kids and name players who haven’t earned it and aren’t producing. Poor culture still remains unfortunately.

Bombers by 5 goals.

Good points. except can't see what it has to do with culture.

Bombers have bough in some leg speed too in McKenna + Fantazia

Hope it's wet (praying that it is) otherwise on paper we don't look too promising.

Not sure where Jackson fits this week and will be interesting to see if he does play.

Won't be the first or last time anyone will be baffled by selections so hopefully we just come switched on for the entire game.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
