Adelaide likely to grab Stephens.  Dees would have a tough choice here. I’d prefer Kemp and Ash over Weightman

If that happens then Freo will take Ash. They need wingmen after losing Hill and Langdon

And we probably won't use Freo's 2020 pick 55-72

But we still effectively downgraded 26 to 28 in the trade.  Not wanting to make a big deal of it but some posters keep thinking 28 is a free hit.  It isn't.

It's Carlton's 4th. And it will likely be a lot higher than that. Everyone keeps talking about next year being a compromised draft due to Academy and Father sons. But that means a heap of later picks will be used as points.

That 4th rounder will come in a fair bit imo. And we are much more likely to use it next year than we would pick 50 this year due to not having a first rounder.

Can’t see Stephens passing Adelaide and Freo who just traded all there wingmen

Stephens still a chance to Sydney if they go for midfield class rather than Flanders, but I can absolutely see Adelaide going McAsey, they are in a full rebuild and need to get tall pillars. Then Freo will find it hard to go past Robertson as a Lachie Neale replacement and could be tempted by Serong or whoevers left from Ash/Young. They've got Henry coming after that who projects as wing as much as a forward and can move Brayshaw or Cerra outside.

Freo's 2 picks are interesting. i suspect they'll take Robertson and either Ash or Stephens.

i reckon the Blues will grab the other or Serong

and we will get whichever is left.

Where do they see Jackson fitting in with Gawn? It seems they think he is coordinated enough to make it as a key forward.

They see Jackson as a forward to start with, and actually as another onballer! At this tags they don’t see him as a ruck at all really, especially with Gawn there, he would just go in for a few minutes here and there.

I tend to agree, but I am just passing on what I have heard  around the traps.

but there are other needs for those clubs, so there is a belief that stephens may fall to us.

Have you heard anything about the potential pick swap with Geelong?

Not yet, I will see what I can find out.

I do like the idea of it though!

I just know they believe Jackson could be an absolute star, And while they rate Young highly, they see Jackson has a bigger ceiling.

They also love Pickett and weightman and would love to get them both if possible, so I guess that could see the Geelong trade happen.

If it doesn’t, we get someone at 10 who could be any of stephens, serong, ash possibly.

I hate to say it, but I think we have been fairly set on Weightman all along, and we know we can get him 100% at 10. IMO this explains todays trade too. We tried to trade up for Butters last year too (lucky we didn't as it would have cost us 3), and since then we have been after a small forward of note.

This swap has been in the pipeline for a while.

We will pick Jackson, then whoever slides to 10 (I don’t think it is weightman who they want), have heard it may be Stephens, and they are wanting Pickett, they really, really like him.

I would suggest we may need to do something to get pick 28 a bit lower to get Pickett though.

Also heard De Koning has been spoken about. Super tall but plays tall back at the moment but has played as an onballer in juniors!

On baller as in ruckman?

De Koning was played as a tall HB (imho one of the top performers in this role), in his four matches during the carnival.

A mark and kick type player, quite accurate by foot within his comfort zone/range (about 40 meters tops) and with his height he seems more destined to a ruck role if he can make the step up to AFL.

More than likely gone a tad earlier than 28.

Doubt it, but if we do something like 10 and 28 for 14 and 17 then he might be a chance.

i am not sure what i think of that deal. i feel like the talent in this draft drops off a bit outside of the top 12 or so. i reckon we should grab Jackson or Young at 3   one of Ash/Stephens/Serong at 10 and best avaliable at 28

Primary list can be just 38. Bennell and Brown can go onto rookie list from SSD so we have 6 rookies. Healthy salary cap next year.

I agree, but if we want Pickett (and I have no idea if we do), then it's too early at 10 and probably too late at 28.

Pick 8 for pick 10 and 28. Fascinating.

Worth noting that having pick 28 also means me have the realistic possibility of live pick trading on the second night of the draft. After all the fuss of the first round is done and everyone has a day to evaluate.

I.e Pick 28 and 2020 third rounder for 23 to grab a slider (many eyes here are on Pickett of course) we have our eye on.  All by prior understanding with a club that isn't interested in that particular player.  A pre-agreed 'if this situation arises, then' deal.

But the value that is being placed on just a couple of slots up the draft this year is astonishing.  Heavily influenced by the mis-shapen bureaucracy of academy and FS and so forth, but what a weird ride it has been already.

Adding more on the bureaucracy note - 2020 draft is going to be all about 'draft point value' for the grand haul of F/S, Academy etc so that third round will be wanted, as will even the 2020 fourth rounder we just picked up.

No, de koning actually played as an onballer in juniors. Ha splayed everywhere throughout his junior time, but was played key back due to height as he shot up to over 200cm

You aren't suggesting he might be played as an on baller now though surely.

Was mentioned in the articles about Brown training with us that he would be a rookie if we took him.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
