Dees give up Booze

Oliver is among the Dees to give up alcohol for the rest of the season:  "I won't be drinking until the end of the season, just want to make sure if we're there in September that I'll be fresh and ready to go," Oliver said.

Clearly Lewis is highly respected among the players.  "I think he (Lewis) might have mentioned (that the Hawks went on a booze ban)," Oliver said..."When he says something, you do it. If he says don't do it, you don't do it..."It's pretty simple."

I think we are developing a core of serious and committed players.  And kudos to Oliver and co to have the maturity to listen to the Lewis voice of experience.

Thank god that doesn’t apply to supporters. If it was t for the MFC I wouldn’t have a reason to drink.

Hahahaha! I'm sure the neighbours think I beat up the missus each weekend.

"Why? Why did I choose you? I could have chosen 17 others and I'm stuck with you. You can't even do the simple things right! No wonder I drink. All you do is break my heart and make me feel bad."

Then after a win: "I love you. I really, really love you."

On topic: I heard that in the after match wrap up and smiled. Not because I think it really matters unless they are getting shitfaced every weekend, but because it shows that the team wants to do the 1%'ers that will (hopefully) take them from a good team to a great team.

You could be right their Uncle.  I recall reading that Dusty doesn't partake in any substances during a season and he has certainly reaped the rewards.  As Oliver said - its about sacrificing a bit now.

If all our players buy in to these 1%'ers and are totally professional with their preparation and their recovery (especially when away from the club) then we can become a very good club and maybe one day a great club again.

Oliver this season; avg's 30 disposals, 17 contested poss, 13 uncontested poss, 7 clearances, 7 tackles and 5 i50 a game. Guy is a freak and i'm so happy he is buying into the club and willing to do the 1%'ers to go even further.

I don't know the Jack Watts story, and don't pretend that my musings are anything close to reality, but my reading of the whole thing was that he just didn't take that stuff seriously enough. And this isn't a bag on him. We all have different takes on life and what matters. Being a robot when you are in your 20's and in the prime of life is a big ask, but, if football is your passion then maybe those little things will make the difference between becoming a legend or a trivia question.

Most high end athletes don't drink alcohol at all. I think that this comment by Lewis may be a veiled swipe at Bernie Vince who has a well known problem with being a party boy.

I highly doubt that, I think it's more a case of Lewis showing leadership to the kids. ie: if you're serious, buy in.

In no way does this apply to supporters. I know I'm a far better person modified by a snoot full of whiskey.

It would be no secret that I indulged in one or two adult beverages last night but am glad to hear this.

The talent and effort is definitely there. The game smarts will come. Any other edge we can get is only a good thing.

Different strokes for different folks.

Where they are versus where we are are miles apart.

Any small victories they can get should be cherished

Agree with this. Sizeable difference between a team approaching a flag window needing to squeeze out the last 1% of performance, and a team with a crushed morale that needs to do what it needs to do to stay together.

Baker Street

Winding your way down on Baker Street
Light in your head and dead on your feet
Well, another crazy day
You'll drink the night away
And forget about everything

This city desert makes you feel so cold
It's got so many people, but it's got no soul
And it's taken you so long
To find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything

You used to think that it was so easy
You used to say that it was so easy
But you're trying, you're trying now

Another year and then you'd be happy
Just one more year and then you'd be happy
But you're crying, you're crying now

Way down the street there's a light in his place
He opens the door, he's got that look on his face
And he asks you where you've been
You tell him who you've seen
And you talk about anything

He's got this dream about buying some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one-night stands
And then he'll settle down
In some quiet little town
And forget about everything

But you know he'll always keep moving
You know he's never gonna stop moving
'Cause he's rolling, he's the rolling stone
And when you wake up, it's a new morning
The sun is shining, it's a new morning
And you're going, you're going home

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
