Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Priority draft picks

We have no reason to complain about other clubs getting a helping hand.

Without AFL assistance we may not even be around.

I have mixed feeling about that. If someone puts you on a conveyor belt with a meat grinder at the end, then starts a routine of turning up the speed then giving you a little push each time you're just about to fall off the end, how grateful should you be?

The transition to a modern commercialised game was necessary, but decades of AFL administrators approached it in a short-sighted, reactive way that was extremely oriented to advantage the big clubs while neglecting not only the smaller AFL-level clubs but also the overall strength of lower-level competitions, sapping the depth of talent in the game just as that depth of available professionals became more and more important.

Melbourne's administrators weren't up to the challenge, but the severity of the challenge was a product of the AFL's 'decision-making process' being to have a beer with the clique of high-profile leaders of 'power' clubs.

Maybe a pre-condtion of being considered for a priority pick should be that all Carlton supporters commit to never making the joke about having 16.4 premierships because they owned 20% of North in the 90s.

Five years from now, will the AFL be telling St Kilda, Footscray or North 'oh sorry we can't afford to bail you out' after dribbling away literally hundreds of millions of dollars directly on the botched GWS/Gold Coast expansion, and imposing further hundreds of millions of dollars of losses for the other clubs playing games against these two cardboard towers?

Again, I accept that expansion was necessary, but it must be acknowledge the whole thing was botched, and once again in a way that most disadvantages the smallest and 'politically' weakest clubs.

The Richmond President mentioned on radio yesterday (3AW) that on some studies it may well be 2032 before the expansion clubs turn a profit. She went on to say that this was significantly later than had first been projected.

Queensland is a very difficult market. The Bears/Lions have been there for 30 years.. won three premierships and are still showing a loss. Attendance yesterday 18,000.

Without AFL MFC was gawnnnnnnn - shut the doors last to leave the building to switch the lights off forever.

The thought seems to bring you some kind of pleasure. Strange, that kind of gloating is not what one would expect to hear from a MFC supporter.

Something's not adding up. I wonder which part?

It was GWS when they were looking good (as per SWYL’s earlier BigFooty screenshot), now it’s Richmond after they won the flag. The guy is an A-grade narcissist, he comes on here dropping hints that’s he’s some sort of AFL big wig when he’s really a lonely fatty sitting in his mums basement.

I think you're jumping to conclusions, ET: his mum might not have a basement.

I agree with Peggy expansion clubs are a long term project but essential component of a National competition to secure TV rights deal that benefit all clubs

ahhh I think she was being critical of the AFL expanding the comp without proper analysis and reference to the clubs.

Some on here will yawn, but this is one of those handful of areas that the American's have a lot to teach us. They have a league where you can fire your coach, bottom out, and win a superbowl within 2 seasons if you make the right calls with your list and drafts.

IMO the priority picks should never have been taken away. The Blues got their double dip before us, and then after we got ours the Eddies of the world chucked an all-too-predictable hissy fit and they were gone. Meanwhile the Blues did nothing, and the Demons went ten years before even thinking about finals.

The above posters are right when they suggest good leadership is what clubs need. But there's only so many leaders around that are bona-fide the way Roos is. And of those, some are off to jail and others know coaching bad clubs will put you in an early grave.

There's no doubt in my mind that to get supporters in on the ground floor, early draft picks are a great thing. We should know better than most. I never saw a problem with a list in as dire straits as the Blues getting ONE pick to improve their outlook. Especially if it's after the first round. Something I think people are forgetting is that with such a low draft age, picks aren't much more than a pot shot, even in this day and age of clever recruiting. It's why we gave 2 (late) first rounders for Lever. They get to roll the dice twice, we get an All Australian.

The NFL take their players at 21/22ish after they've had longer to prove themselves. Players who get taken out of high school as 4 star recruits VERY often do nothing in their College years and miss being drafted altogether. Our draft, by comparison, just isn't as big a deal as people make out. Scully and Trengove were absolute certainties when taken, and look what happened there. A couple more shots at what amounts to not much more than a lucky dip (after the first round) is exactly what the league should consider throwing at these basket cases. If for nothing else, they can use the pick as draft capital to trade for mature players.

Reading between the lines, my take is they’ve been told not to even think about it because it won’t happen:

No more handouts: Carlton won't seek priority draft pick

Agreed. They know they're a snowball's chance in hell of getting a PP and have tried to spin it so they look somehow noble.

I enjoy seeing Carlton struggle. Long may it continue. It's interesting to look at who they've jettisoned that are currently playing decent footy at other clubs. Kennedy, Gibbs, Waite, EddieBetts, Tuohy, Gowers, Robinson, Jacobs, Holman and others were let go

Henderson & Grigg currently injured but are auto 22 selections for their current clubs and even though he's at Casey, Jeffy would be a walk up start at the Blues

They can blame "draconian draft penalties" and "compromised drafts" all they like. To lose the talent above shows they've mismanaged themselves into their current malaise

It was a reasonable turnout considering there was quite a lot of rain from 1.30 until 3.00. It was enough for kick to kick to be cancelled, and during the second half it rained again.

They now have coffee.

I know FC on Monday night mentioned  the chance of Prority picks for Carlton, GC and St Kilda. Well Mick Warner on 3AW tonight said other clubs believe Carlton and GC will not only get prority picks but will get picks 1 and 2 as those picks and St Kilda could also get a pick somewhere in the top 20. Well that would just about be it for me for the AFL. Where’s the you need to build and culture and environment around the club, yeah that’s right that’s only if your a minnow and the AFL CEO doesn’t barrack for you. Absolute Rubbish!

Jon Ralph said the opposite on Twitter tonight. Said the AFL had clarified tonight that the pre-draft priority pick was dead, and that end of round 1 (pick 19) is all they will get

Well hopefully Jon Ralph is right for a change, although I don’t think any team deserves one if we couldn’t get one a few seasons ago. I mean if St Kilda get one this year do we get one if we miss finals.

Sooo,,,,,   Carton get a priority pick on-top of the 1st pick they're aiming for...  and they can take D Shiel ?  and trade with the Crows,,, Pick 1 to the Crows,,, for the Crows 1st Pick (P-7 or after), plus some nice Xtra's ?

Let's watch and see....   if this pans out.   I think it calls the AFL into question, as to tampering.!

If any priority picks were to be given, at any time,  They should be made NON-Tradeable.

If we weren't eligible for one in 2012, then no team should ever be eligible again. Our 2012 was worse than Carltons season this year, and worse than anything produced in decades bar Fitzroys demise as a club.

No priority pick.

yep, and they will justify high end priority picks for teams on the 'well...melbourne got pick 3 for frawley, which was LIKE a priority pick' basis

it's a joke but seeing as we don't have a first rounder it's kinda irrelevant for us this year

If STK get one I’ll be furious. Didn’t they just come of 11-12 win seasons back to back? A blight on the game if they get it.

Bit sick of this crap to be honest. We have a system in place to help struggling clubs and if you get things half right you should be competitive. Brisbane have set the precedent now when it never should have happened.

Carlton fans still think the AFL owes them for the salary cap punishments that were to be fair over the top at the time but gee didn’t they tank enough to make up for that?

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger.
