I have had to bite my tongue on this 1 and have stayed away from the footy shows and news as it will just [censored] me off, I will wait for the teams response come next Tuesday night, but I won’t hold my breath I said to myself after the Collingwood loss last year that the club was on their last chance with me, if they don’t make finals this year injuries permitting they won’t be getting another cent out of me, will be upto them to win me back, I live in the country so to go to the footy is not cheap.

Dont need to beat Richmond but need to show effort because what they dished up yesterday was almost as bad as the Collingwood game, just doesn’t seem like anything has changed

And there in lies the problem “excuses”.

How long have we been doing this for, 12 seasons now! I think it’s safe to say that the toys are well and truely out of the cot by now

My god it seem like our team will never change their habits.

Richmond supporters have been more or less in the same good ship lollipop...

The teams that worry me the most are skilful. Based on this I was interested how we would go against a traditionally skilful team. Once again it reminds me that this is out biggest weakness. It was so evident. They were pinpointing 40m passes in the wet, whilst we were missing short passes. I think we are potentially top 8 team, but hard to see us top 4/premiership material at this stage.

My notes:

  • Petracca can be played in the centre bounces at times, but he should be predominately played as a forward.
  • Jones tagging Mitchell was a very good decision IMO and he did a great job. I would probably play him on Martin next week.
  • Pedersen needs to come back into the side for balance until TMac is fit. Particularly given how far up the field Hogan is playing.
  • I like Frost, but he is poor in the wet.
  • Lever lacks confidence at the moment and is a liability. I thought Goodwin should have tried him up forward yesterday once it was clear our structure wasn’t working.
  • Lewis is finished. As good a kick as he is, we would be much better with a player who can keep his feet in the contest.
  • Vince had a dirty day but has been very good this year otherwise.
  • I wanted Bugg dropped last week and you cannot trust him to kick goals.
  • Hunt must come back in.
  • Our defence needs to trust OMac not to be out marked because we are getting beaten on the crumb. This will be a big issue this week given how Richmond play.
  • Overall, I think Goodwin needs to go back to making sure we have balance in our selection. Hogan, Pedersen/Weideman and Petracca as our key forwards and OMac and two of Frost, Lever and Wagner in defence. The rest of our side needs to be selected with an emphasis on pace.

This is a good comment (amongst many good comments).

We are sending too many up into marking contests (Frost is a major problem in that area).

We need to rely on OMac to do his job.

It is a fair point SWYL, I accept that. I just don't like hysteria.

You can say the exact same thing about Richmond, that they were "mentally fragile"". Years of under achievement, the it just clicked for them.

And I'm no apologist, I believe we have massive issues with defence etc. But issues can be fixed. Round 4 is a little early for hysteria.

We have some very winnable games by round 12, if at halfway we are negative win loss ration, I think big questions should and will be asked. Was it Tracc or someone said there were no excuses this year, so I expect them to get it right.

But Demonland goes too far sometimes, people need to drop the emotions and think more.

I watched the replay of the first quarter only, and we dominated as much as I remember.  I mean we really were all over them, it looked like we were about to have a day out and [censored] them. Everyone looked switched on.

I can not believe what happened after quarter time...  did someone slip tranquilizers in the water bottles?   Just unbelievable.

No; Clarko 'adjusted'

I am still shattered. Have stayed away from the water cooler and mainstream media all day. At about the15 to 20 minute mark of the first quarter I said to my brother that despite our total dominance we had not converted enough on the scoreboard. 4.4 to 1.0 I think it was. Should have been at least 6 or 7 or even 8 given our total control. Fatal not to convert when you can. We all saw what happened.

Not at all, but that foot injury may do it for him.

All i am saying is that the current Captain onfield right now is not the man for the job

He stuck to his task on Sunday, when during the 2nd Q he needed to take some matters into his own hands, as Captain and start Leading.

I love Jones, but he aint the Captain this club needs.

The MFC is not the average Football Club, special needs come to mind.

The foundations are too weak still, we needed Roos for at least 5 years

Jones is too nice, i would never knock his endeavour

Injury plaqued Geelong??

We lost by 3 pts.

Turn it up mate

Being at the game, they had 2 on the bench and they had injured players on the field.

They were the walking wounded. Do you have no memory of anything? Or just self serving selected memory loss.

Get over yourself.

Like I said, the injured players returned to the field injured and significantly impaired, particularly Selwood.

In any event, the better team on the day even with 19 fit players was clearly Geelong. Had Max kicked the goal, it would have been a steal for us not a vindication of how superb a team we have become.

Falling over the line against Brisbane and defeating a hapless North would surely have given an indication as to where we are at. We are a 6-10 placed club.

I would like to think some pride will help us bounce back this week with at least an AFL level performance. But am prepared for another humiliation at the hands of the Toiges.

The club has come a long way since the pre Roos years, but has under achieved after his departure. A first time coach, with no experience and a dogged mindset, has been a formula Melbourne has used before. Let's hope for a different outcome this time, there are 42 games left on a contract.

And I would appreciate you never refer to me with that derogatory term. We may disagree in opinion, but name calling reduces your argument below that of an intelligent individual.

Yeah, Selwood playing the entire last term through the middle meant he was significantly impaired.  Nice try.

Couldn't agree more. SWYL.

Jones is capable , and does, some fantastic things each week, but not since Todd Viney have we had a true on-ground leader.  Some say neitz was but the evidence of fragility over the early 2000's puts that in context.  Selwood, Hodge, Barassi, Riscuitto, Worsfold just never allowed nor accepted fragility.

Jack Viney's loss was immeasurable and I can't have him back soon enough to instail the missing component on ground.

He is the key.

Good post H as H. That's my memory of the Geelong games as well.

I also was concerned after Brisbane,  but after the first 1/4 against North for the first time I sat back and felt the team was in control all day and confident of a win, although tricky at times. That instils some confidence that last week won't be a repeat, but it does get down to selection and match day coaching as well.

People are talking up North, yet they only beat the Blues in Hobart. Commentators are fickle and many its the first thing that comes into the head. Its a bit more complex than that.  If Viney and T Mac were available I would be very confident about Anzac Eve.

Its tricky drawing form lines on anyone exepcte GWS at present with confidence.

Just read most of the comments.   Typical demonland.    Sack everyone

LAST YEAR       St Kilda thrashed Richmond by 67 points after leading at 3 1/4 time by 90 points    Richmond members were (again burning memberships) but that turned out alright for the tigers didn't it?

We are at round 4        ROUND 4

We are 1 win off top spot.    This is the most even season that I have seen.    Any team can beat any other on any given day

Christ Collingwood beat Adelaide in Adelaide with half it's forward line missing.

Yep it was a terrible poor game from the dees but there is another game next week against a good side

So how about we put all the knives away for a couple of more weeks

They are just being sharpened Bossdog.

If another thumping happens today week we will need the Red Cross as a sponsor.

Jokes aside it is not a new experience we have been doing this for half a century situation normal.

Yes we are at round 4 but every week has seen alarming gaping holes which haven't been fixed since last year. After round 23, do you think its acceptable for these players who are meant to be 'burning' to give up so badly on Sunday?

That wasn’t a bad day, that was a total humiliation from a soft weak club
I was born in 64 and can count the number of good years I’ve witnessed on one hand
I travel 4hrs by car about six times a year, have been a member since 89 & have basically lost my love for the team
That was the worst performance I’ve seen by this club, worse than the Geelong game when Bailey got the sack & worse than the Neeld days & that’s saying something, the reason is we have an excellent list.
If there’s not a fierce reaction next week & for the rest of the year l won’t be renewing my MCC membership that l waited 30years for & received it 18 months ago & my MFC membership

You have it all wrong. You just need to have a more positive mental attitude. It'll help heaps and that.

SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
