Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Is Goodwin a better coach than Roos?

Winners at last

Recommended Posts

Jumping the gun a bit here. Roos took a club to a premiership, two grand finals, and constant finals series. Goodwin is about to (hopefully) take a team to his first finals series. While he's very promising so far, he's got a long way to go to prove himself.

Goodwin will be a great coach because of Roos.  Both are doing/done their job.  I see it as a sequential partnership, rather than an either/or.  At 4:31, I hope I'm thanking the lord baby Jesus for both of them.  Can you say Hallalujah?  How about Go Dees!

Roos time at the Dees seemed to be more around education which didn't necessarily mean wins but to educate and strengthen the list. Now Goodwin has the list, foundations & base that Roos set which allows Goody to focus more on coaching & strategy.

However Roos has a premiership, Goody doesn't so wait 5 weeks or so and then they will be about even ;)

Very hard to judge Goodwin this early into his career.  So far, he's looking very capable.

Roos however exemplifies the fact that there is a lot more to being a coach than simply being a 'match day coach'.

Roos was our Ron Barassi (when he went to Sydney in '93).

Barass (who admitted in those days that he wasn't on the cutting edge as far as tactical nous went) went up there to actually turn the Swannies into a football club and not a millionaire's plaything.

Roos' brief (though he hadn't been out of the game as long) had a similar brief. His job was to change us from a park footy outfit to a professional one.

Apples and oranges at this stage for mine. Should Goody have as long a career then I reckon it will be a more legit conversation.

Roosy is a Legend

I'd argue that without Roos Goodwin would likely be coaching the crows. But I do agree with your point

I think that Roos did a great job building a good culture at the Club.

But I think Goodwin is a much better match day coach.

Goodwin is in his first season as head coach. Roos took Swans to a flag, consistently played finals and handed over  better lists and cultures at by th clubs than what he was given. Let's revisit this in another 10 years.

A terrible first quarter which has been a theme.

Made the right adjustments as the game went on.

The game plan works when the team plays well. Which is a nothing statement I know but at the same time we move the ball, we attack, we defend aggressively. It's not Roos' first 2 years when we'd just sit back and hope we somehow luck our way in to 12 goals and pinch a game.

Yet to see what he can do with getting talented footballers and turning them in to A graders. Gawn, Viney and Hogan have had down years impacted by injury. As have Salem and Watts. Oliver and Petracca have to go to the next level with fitness, and Hunt with skill.

I started the year as a one eyed Melbourne list supporter, and a Goodwin knocker. I just didn't believe the bloke had what it taken. I probably judged Goodwin in relation to his past (gambling issues and Essendon drug saga issues). I thought Goodwin should have known better. As it turns out I was just being overly critical towards him, and unfairly so. He has been a terrific coach this year. I cannot fault him. I believe 110% that he is the right coach for this club, and more importantly, he seems to gel well with the group. I think Goodwin is the guy to take us to a flag. We have the list. Very impressed with today's game. Even though we lost - we fought till the end. Collingwood just slowed the play in the latter part (something they haven't had the common sense to do all year).

On today's effort I agree.

All we needed to do was shut down or out mucsell them in that fieat Qrt.

..but Goody still has a while to run on his tenure.

2 tackles in the first 20 minutes. Game over.

Roos is a proven success. Goodwin has done nothing of note yet.

Roos took a club on its knees and completely changed it from top to bottom. So far we have underachieved under Goodwin, especially mentally.

Having said that, 7 coaches haven't solved our softness so I'm not sure who will/can.

Absolutely pathetic!!! Not difficult to see why Viney's absence was sorely missed and why he was made co captain.

Compare our on ball units approach to this matter against say Sydney. All grisly meatheads who will run straight through you for fun. We are as soft as butter . Total powder puffs.

For Christ sake, a finals position was at stake, bloody die for the cause boys. There is no other option. Bruise free was back. As Goodwin says, it's about forming habitual behaviour and this was this the first thing he pounced on in his presser. The planets align.Oliver usually does it, Viney always does it, the rest struggle to do it " habitually"and aren't "gold class".

You need a gold class midfield to win flags. Why did the Hawks go after Mitchell and OMeara so hard? Why are Dusty and Kelly so  keenly bid? why do the cats want an old Ablett after getting Dangerfield? Good clubs never stop getting these types. Someone writes in here mids, mids and more mids. He's on the money for mine.

Our midfield was totally asleep at the wheel today , they weren't on and they weren't professional footballers.

Is it not Goodwin's job to get them pumped in the 1st Quarter?

It has happened with so much regularity this year

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
