So underwhelmed by these ins. Brayshaw back too early, Weideman not ready, Wagner not up to it. Hannan deserves his spot but was very quiet in his last outing.

Nervous about the selected side's ability to move the ball effectively and especially the ability to score if Tom McDonald has to go back to cover Frost.

Hannan was injured very early against the Roos, struggled afterwards and likely shouldn't have played on. Looking at our current forwardline he is one of the more important players!

The ins aren't inspiring but truthfully we have most of our best team available so there's no excuse. I would've personally given Watts another week to prove himself or get dropped, I feel like he's got runs on the board from last year and earlier this year, but it's probably less about the fact that he isn't having an impact and more to do with how he's been going at it. It simply isn't competitive enough.

Weids has been in good form at Casey and is the future, bringing him in at this stage is a big call but could be huge for his development. We've seen what he can do, I really like the look of him.

Hannan has been excellent this year for a player having his first year of AFL footy, and as for Brayshaw I'm like many others. I would've personally held his return another week, but he was a star for Casey last week and his one of the most talented players on our list. It will be great to see him back out on th G.

I know I've said it and a lot of others have said it, but this game is huge. I really hope we bring it.

Strangest selections of the whole year.

None of the ins are screaming for a spot and the outs are  notional best 22 except for another one game experiment in Maynard.

Pederson over Watts ???...

Weid has played a few good quarters at VFL level ...note I said quarters not games

Brayshaw.... two games after how many weeks out... around 10

It is what it is everyone, happy or unhappy, it doesn't really matter now.  It's time to put our game face on and hope the boys take the 4 points in any way possible.

They have put themselves in this position and made us miserable at the same time, all we can do is turn up or tune in and cheer them on so they can turn it around.

Brayshaw - Has played 3 good games in the VFL and is a class above, I have no issues with bringing him in this week.

Watts - By dropping him now he at least has a chance to play 1-2 good VFL games and possibly come back in. What would've happened if he played another poor game against the Saints? Dropped to VFL with possibly only 1 game to prove himself? Goody might think Jack needs a kick in the arse to get him going again?

Weid - I think this kid has plenty of potential and seems to playing his role in the VFL. Is he ready? I don't know, but I'm damn glad that they've got confidence in him and are giving him a run. Let's be honest too, has to be better then what Watts has given us in the last few games.

Maynard - Bit unlucky, but he's had a taste and will be better for it. Guessing this was more of a team balance situation.

With Hogan out, I'd say all Goody wants is for Weideman to jump at the ball. As long as he's bringing it to ground, then we're in with a big chance. Hannan really does have a huge role to play on Sunday!

All year Ive felt baffled by the selections......but I have to admit that on game day Goody seems to have called it right. Leaving Salem and Watts out for SUCH a critical game for the club took bravery....which I admire in a coach. Better than a Neeld or a  Lyon type with "stick with the known" under all circumstances. He's nothing if not creative...... lets hope Im praising him again come Sunday eve!

Id have kept Maynard , dropped Harmes.

Corey had a crack and I thought warranted the avail of stringing at leastva couple of games, god know others have had that opportunity. Harmes has collected a lot of fluffy stats for mine without particularly adding to the cake.

I agree with those that think the FD havent always been our highest asset at times. Strange days... strange season.

The midfield needs a lift for sure. Hope Our captains improve .

Its our fwd line that has been disfunctional, hence the changes. All the stoppages, i50s, CPs, pressure stats and tackles etc have been good.

They've dropped off recently though 'Jnr' and that's why the results haven't been so good.

Shame to see Watts dropped. He's obviously struggled for form since coming back from injury, but to lose a key scoring option is bad no matter how you look at it. To lose our two best ball users in Watts and Salem in a team struggling with its ball use is frustrating and dumb. It's going to be a struggle to win this game. It's sucks to be in such a poor position with our season on the line.

Petracca will need a massive game up forward if we are to be any chance. He's the only one left who has great vision and kicking skills going into the 50. He's one of the few scoring options we have left too.

Jeez it's gonna be a tense game!

I agree. Such a big call dropping watts. The game will be high intensity tomorrow. We'll need Watts' excellent decision making and perfect ball use.

And besides, Watts is an outside player. Why do we all look to him to provide fierce contests? Not his primary job. We should turn the heat on Viney and the midfielders. That's their job. Watts' job is to finish. He'll only ever play as well as the midfield supply.

Queen's birthday he was one of our best players? Watts had 5 contested possessions that day. One of the lowest count on the ground. He doesn't crack into a contest. They just gave the ball to him heaps.

The winning goal he kicked was him receiving the ball. He didn't crack into the contest and win the ball. He ran into space and received an easy uncontested ball all by himself. Then he used his sublime finishing skills and won us the match.

Our coaches need to bloody smarten up. Yes we all love being tough. Coaches want our players tough. But Viney is our tough guy, Watts is our finisher. Big mistake dropping Watts!

Exactly. The other point is Salem is one of our best disposers of the ball as well as Watts. He is not a hard nut either. Watch out for some  ridiculous ball skill errors.

Totally disagree.

Finals, and the game tomorrow "will be high intensity tomorrow" . Agree.

You then say "Why do we all look to him to provide fierce contests? Not his primary job." . This is total rubbish. Maybe we could ask the AFL to bring in the Jack Watts rule where if he finds himself in a fierce contest we can stop the game and substitute in a player with some ticker?

No one disputes Jacks class as an outside reciever, deliverer or shot on goal. But the modern game requires that ALL players win contested ball when required, because the nature of Footy is that you're going to have situations when thats required, and in finals these contests will determine the winner.

If Jack Watts doesn't provide fierce contests at every opportunity, he won't play finals for MFC, and nor should he.

Bye bye finals!  No Jack Watts to lift and turn on his best. No one now to produce the necessary goals and goal assists that we need. Bad call Goody, you have just committed football suicide.

not actually footy suicide.  but he has [censored] up.  he will know this late Sunday afternoon.

As for JW?  He's gone.  I'm his biggest fan, he has been ridiculously hard done by.  But its over for him in terms of a Dee's future.  He'll be traded.  For sure.

I too am baffled by the betting & it's been the case all season. Odds didn't widen much when Saint Nick was ruled out either.

Just hope there's some 'landers out there that have cleaned up & eleviated post-loss depression this year.

His 100th has quietly slipped under the radar.

May he have a career best game tomorrow.  We need him (and his 21 mates) to bring it home vs the Saints!!

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
