If i was coaching i would be a big point about. I don't understand why Goodwin is avoiding it.

It isn't a Media beat up, Nought have won 17 games in a row....17....

Norf turn up to beat us up, and it works every time.

They have a physically large side, even with so many kids, and I believe our guys are intimidated by them. Can't see any other reason to not be in with a show against them.

Norf are not that good any more, but they rag doll us like we are a first year GWS.

Another missed opportunity!

New we would lose as soon as Nth was accused of Tanking & of course Melb was playing them next!

Frustrating part is we have lost 4 games to teams below us, nth x 2, freo & hawks( when they were playing poor)

Not making excuses....reality is whilst Nth is second last they have lost 6 games under a goal or so...Comp is very even

Frustrating to see how Hawks,Swans with poor starts are able to regroup & Swans aiming for top 4 and Hawks may make the 8.....

They have a engrained DNA of finding ways to win!

We can only hope Goodwin & co are building  this into this team!

Alright, I'm as upset as anyone here. There is not much you can say except Melbourne is playing the long game. Goodwin knows and is right to say there is a long way to go for this group. How does a North player waltz around 3 opponents and they barely get a finger tip on him.  That's what I don't get. When we nailed a tackle in the first quarter, it resulted in a turnover and a Melbourne goal. I can't credit that the players didn't want this enough. That is just not possible. So many players there in body but not in spirit. Teams are not gifting you a win this season, you go out and earn the 4 points. I want to see what I witnessed at Adelaide oval vs Adelaide or against Wet Toast in Perth. Not the dross we saw yesterday. We've seen too much of that already and they're memories we'll never erase.

Sorry i dont buy these poor umpiring decisions, we should have kicked with the wind in the first quarter, goodie chose the wrong side, goodie didnt make the right moves, past history shows we have not beaten north in over 3,998 days or whatever.  End of the day we had one of our best teams on the field, we were close to top four playing a team ranked 17th. They came to play we did not.  We had too many passengers, too many half hearted runs, tackles, poor hand passes instead of kicking, poor decisions to play on when they should have gone back and had a shot, etc..  we had more than enough opportunities but failed as we so often have done when we go into a game as a favorite against a bottom side. We have a sad history of loosing the games we should win and winning some that we should not. It would appear that some players go into some games paying too little respect to the opposition.

We are desperate for a one on one lock down defender. Brown always destroys us.

But with the wizzy wizzy zone would we get that lockdown ?

Another typical Melbourne performance. All we had to do is scrape past north, take the 4 points and the game is hisotry ,we had put ourselves into a winning position and we blew it.

This year really could have been our year every team is beatable and especially the top four teams at the G I would fancy our chances.

Our last game against the pies all of a sudden looks like huge task.

Should've kicked with the wind, can't believe we did a Cotchin. Tried to be too clever by half and expected the wind to win it for us. Just play the percentages

Guys...I was there.  We definitely LOST the toss!  I was watching and hoping that we would win it!

I was there ...agreed ..def lost the toss....we were just awful...4 points flattering ....a little like Adelaide today & for all those who bemoan the Darwin game ...I hope we never play in Hobart again ...it is a venue I never want to return too!!

17 games we've lost to this [censored] club. Never was a win more crucial and we just did not come with any sense of urgency or application.

17th vs a team vying for top 8. Pathetic.

I thought not one player won his position and we lost Hogan to injury.

We should just forfeit the North games from now on.

I didn't see the actual toss but on the coverage they kept talking about how we kicked against the wind as it was expected to pick up through the day (which it did). So I assume we won the toss and kicked against the wind.

Incorrect Doctor! We lost the toss,  I watched it happen .

Goodwin's on Fox Footy Monday night. I hope Healy and King grill him about the North Melbourne disaster. It's bewildering that we continue making the same idiotic mistakes against a team who've lost 8 in a row and have seemed content about it!

Especially frustrating in a year where so many other stupid hoodoos have been knocked on the head. This has the stench of an elephant in the room that will linger all off-season until we can play them again.

I know it's frustrating but we r still in the finals race.

Thats a positive.

On a different note ..   wtf do we continue to sell home games in Darwin ... may cost us a final spot! We give up home ground advantage & actually play sides like the crows who are closer to the Darwin! Understand $$ but gotta get back to our home & build a fortress!

Does anyone else recall the play where Petracca gains the ball in a promising position then elects to handball to a teammate...,.... with a North player standing right in front of him who then takes the Ball and heads off down the field. Just summed up the whole game really.

Not all of us Steve.  There were some of us still on the 'one week at a time' train.

Even od was telling me to throw the lid far away.

I still think we can make finals.  But yesterday we gave up a golden opportunity to get a home final.  Even if we didn't go beyond the elim final to see our team play a final at the MCG would be magical.  Now it is likely to be Adelaide or Sydney.

It's a shame because I was using yesterday as the barometer to see if we had the capacity to 'nut up or shut up' when there was so much at stake.

I was also going to purchase a membership upgrade to ensure a GF ticket if we'd prevailed yesterday but that display proved that we're still some way off being a premiership threat.

Thanks for that - eases my heartburn about the game to some extent. The commentators definitely made it sound like we won the toss.

Interesting comments here, especially the second sentence, when you take into account the kerfuffle, and the following rabid dog type comments on 360, in regard to North's backline getting rag dolled unfairly by TWSNBN the week before. There's obviously a lot of childish, pathological hate out there against the MFC. This is good in a way, because after all, seeing as we were the Founders, and therefore have the serfs best interests at heart, we must remember when on top we should/ must rule with tolerance.......

On another tack our esteemed umpiring fraternity would be justifiably concerned about the pending, end of year, inquiry that will take place at the end of this season by the AFL.

In one's opinion, this season has been seen as the most controversial for many reasons, including inconsistency and downright stupidity.

As the AFL would stammer, nothing to do with our rules (lack of).

Had a look at player % playing time.

Some real surprises:  Viney 74%, Petracca 72%, Melksham 69%.  That is 3 of our in form/better players not in the game for at least a full quarter.   It suggests they have injuries and being managed through games.  I can think of no other reason to have them on the bench.

We know that Jetta and Gawn were touch and go for the game.  Hannan appeared injured and came back on out of necessity.

Were we a team of the walking wounded?

Concerning the amount of passengers we had.

When we play our best footy we have 18-22 guys switched in and playing good footy

games like that it is more like 8-10 and yet we still could have won.

The players seem to have a hard time getting up for games we should win, but love the challenge of better teams

The whole game looked like MFC was setting up for a late flurry with the wind n we looked on track.

In front with 10 min to go and we expected the wind to win it for us.

Fortunately, the game is next Sunday with an extra day to recover.

It's next Saturday, isn't it?

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
