What a [censored] disgrace

Handing Hird an honour like this after what he put those 34 men through and what he put the AFL through is a joke. Basically giving the message to all that he did nothing wrong

I'm going against the grain and agreeing with it.

Hird is one of the greatest players I have seen.

He is the unfairly the face of the scandal. Let's not forget Goodwin was involved in the coaching and Hibberd was playing with the alleged drug cheating.

The AFL need to offer Hird an olive branch. I am not sure, however, this is the best way. They do need to do something.

Unfairly the face ??????

FMD !!

He implemented it all for Christ sake.

He can burn in hell for all i care. We wont know the full extent of effects for years.

Is Goodwin overseeing our medical staff? Or does he take their advice?

Hird is unfairly the face. A simple corporate structure will show Hird didn't oversee the staff implementing the illegal program.

Not going to bother arguing it. Hird is certainly negligent.

Mate...you have NO idea of the history of the drugees at Windy Hill obviously.

What we do is one thing. Whst Hird instigated was another.

Go read ...come back if you understand.

Btw..as a heads up and a pointer it all started after,   ironically your namesake , cleanef up Hird and he took the path of ruin subsequently.

Hardwick's intentions are good in that the public should be getting behind the man's attempts to rehabilitate himself after the doping scandal but the AFL has actually worsened the situation by coming out with this announcement and not thinking about the public's reaction or that of Hird, his family and advisers to the news.

To open Hird up to this sort of thing so early and without having shown very much in terms of remorse for his conduct is in my view counterproductive. Old wounds are being opened up and he would inevitably be booed. The subject would be him and not the Norm Smith medalist and I don't think he quite needs this in his life at the moment.

Let him earn a return to the public stage first.

Most (or certainly many) would agree that if Hird accepts guilt for his part in the doping affair and apologises without reservation, he deserves a second chance. Release of all documents associated with this would be essential to the public acceptance of his apology.

As he still thinks he is innocent and has persued this, and money, as far as he could, the unanimous conclusion must be his complete removal from anything AFL.

Unfortunately the AFL is running absolutely true to form.

Such a sad indictment upon those entrusted to oversee the game.

They ( Gils dills ) have sadly lost all sight of the notion it's not actually 'their' game. It's ours, i.e belong the clubs, its members and followers.

In a quasi animal farm / emperor's new clothes fashion the AFL is run as though its someone's personal hobby farm, all costs provided.

Could there be any more transparent occasion of the chasm between morality/ethics as expected by the populace and the position of the entrusted ?

Hird has NEVER taken true responsibility of that which enshewed subsequently.

He can't be deemed worthy of any other considerations or start true rehabilitation til he does ( admit guilt and responsibilities )

He is a pox on this game.

Hardwick is plainly foolish.

And that idiot apologist for the EFC on the ABC RN morning program said this morning that Hird's greatest crime was that he took on the powers that be (possibly not verbatim -  similar words).

How can Hird ever come to terms with what he did and show remorse (so that we can forgive him) when the AFL does this.

Sadly bb it would appear the people who run our game don't understand either.

This is the List of Players to Have won the Medal up until 2000.

So far they have gone in order of recipients to be invited to present the medals.

But now they have come across the man who has brought the game into total disrepute.

Jobe had to hand back the Brownlow  because of the drugs.

Why the Turd (The Drug Cheating Coach) is allowed to present a medal in the Name of Norm Smith (the Greatest Coach Ever) is beyond me.

Do the AFL think that because the players are playing again then all is forgiven.

Think again you Morons. He will never be forgiven by this person.

The AFL trashed their own brand - not a smart business move. What clowns.

The AFL should never have signed up with ASADA/WADA in the first place, thereby surrendering their authority to botherers from outside of our game.

Get over Hird.

I think the AFL's ridiculous attitude to this since the beginning shows why it must be part of the WADA code. They have attempted to sweep this under the carpet and underplay it at every turn; this occasion case in point. As if you could trust them to honestly and transparently implement any sort of drug code.

I get that the AFL are doing it in order of years but I think they should have skipped Hird at least for now. Time will pass where that saga may not be the first thing we remember about him and we do remember that he was a fantastic player.

But it's still so soon after the final ruling and placing him on a stage on the biggest day of the year in front of 100,000 people and national TV, it's not a good look. Not to mention we don't know how the crowd will react, you could end up with the entire MCG being filled with booing.

Its also not a good look for the game internationally, not many people know about our game but the supplements saga made news around the world. Having him hand over the best on ground at the grand final doesn't send a good message in my opinion.

This saga is the best example you can have as to why sports should not be overseeing their drugs codes. Only a fool could not see the conflict of interest.

Interesting that Gil heads of to France tomorrow on holidays and Hird is currently in Europe (probably visiting the future F/S). Wonder if they will catch up for a glass of red or two to discuss the Norm Smith medal.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
