I think stretch is a definite out, he has tried but not delivered enough to keep Tyson out. Pederson, while he did a couple of good things he needs to make room for Jack Watts if he is available. I am sure that Watts would have done enough had he been fit to equal of better Pederson's effort today.

I've gone from thinking Stretch was a sure-handed linkman with decent disposal to barely VFL.

I maintain the faith though as our top players get back he may well go back to Casey.

But isn't that the problem? He's now being asked to play also as an insider, and then with the absence of insiders, there's less opportunity to stand back and be that linkman. Also, he does have decent/good disposal, but only when he has time.

It's an interesting one, not sure of the solution.

Needs to build a stronger body IMV! Retain but needs another 5 kg of Muscle and definition IMV

Nup Smith to stay, Stretch not up to it

Outs Stretch , Kent ( limited output today)

In Tyson, Watts!

think you could be right .... there is obviously something Goody sees in Smith that we have yet to find.

Noticed him in a one on one marking comp where his job was to spoil and it wasn't pretty

other than the obvious outs of smith, Kent and Stretch. I would also look at resting Hunt to me he looks to have been struggling with something since the West Coast game. 2 of those 4 go out for Watts and Tyson. Pederson also possibly out for balance reasons.

Not sure if serious. Drop Hunt?

Come on man.....you're better than that.

Don't think Watts will play. I reckon his hammy will need another week.

Kent will go out for Ben Ken I'd say.

Yep a good  call!

Unfortunately you could be right also

Hammies don't do well with 3-4 hour flights so they may not risk him.

Pity because we need everyone we got to face down Adelaide

Possibly Kent and Stretch to make way for Kennedy and JKH.

Not sure what to make of Hogans performance today. He really struggled for obvious reasons and maybe needs a week a Casey to regain some match fitness/form?

How will he gain more fitness at Casey than Melbourne?

Out would be stretch and in tyson. Yes another week for watts.

Kent has to go out. Cannot or does not bend over to pick the ball up, cannot take a mark above his head and again shirked several contests today.

I don't think he adds anything to the team. Hardly ever wins a one on one. Always takes the easy option.

As much as I disliked Kents game - he looked a beat slower - like Wagenr last week.

Wagner stepped up from a F-rated game to a solid C so I assume Kent can make a similar adjustment. Stretch disappointed again. Smith has something about him I like but he didn't do much. Melksham works hard but has a bit of Simon Godfrey about him.

Keep Petracca in the middle please! He makes Lewis much better when he falls over and REQUIRES a powerful magician to help him get the ball out of the congestion.

Watts back please for Pedersen. I think we are tall enough but understand if MC see Watts as a small.

Tyson back for Stretch.

To be honest it feels like some time since I have seen so many poor players in an MFC win.

Given that Hogan needs a few runs as does big Maxy, and that we had four or five really poor performances it is a fair effort to come away with the win.

You probably need to give Smith and Kent another run.  Stretch hasn't been in great form and he is a limited player and needs to make way I think.  Kent and possibly Melksham.....both had some under 12 moments today. Melkshams last quarter probably saves him and he can play a variety of roles.  Bernie I think is on borrowed time....his decision making and radar is off and I wonder how plugged in he is at times.  The Pedo show probably finishes when Watts get back, particularly now that Plugger is doing great things.

I'm not massive on Kent but I feel he deserves another week. He can be a dumb footballer at times, but I feel that today he was genuinely trying to work himself into the game and apply the pressure we expect from a small forward. He kept the contest going a few times and while he was often beaten, he gets into position, which I think is very important. He has the smarts to be in an appealing position for a delivery. He seems very low on confidence atm and may very well have his foot out the door, but I do feel he's on a learning path. I can see him contributing next week.

You forgot his habit of going to ground.

A few factors influencing team selection this week IMO:

- Darwin will have a bit more humidity, shouldn't go too tall

- I believe we were flat against the Swans due to both 4 games in 18 days coupled with the trip home from Perth. I think we need to think selection over a two week block and bring some fresh legs in against Port in a fortnight. Perhaps give Watts another week if he's NQR.

- we won't get better if our fringe players don't get a fair crack at AFL level. Oscar is now showing the fruits of perseverance, despite the fact DL continuously dropped him and the FD showed faith. That said, I think Stretch has had a fair run.

only 1 change for me this week - Tyson in for Stretch. Watts and Salem fresh legs for Port next week (and Viney as well, knowing him).

presumably this fragmented discussion refers to Hannon?

Great pick up and versatile tough strong player who can snag a goal from nothing.

You don't play key players in the vfl.

OUT: Pedersen, Stretch

IN: Watts, Tyson

Without Pederson throwing his body into every contest in the last quarter there is no way we would have won it

I did forget about that. In the 1st or 2nd quarter he lost a contest by slipping and going to ground.

Another habit of his is over committing to the contest when going for tackles. The player with the ball just pivots and he might get one hand on them.

The shirking of contests though is unforgivable. He has done it on many occasions this year.

Kent has been around for some time now. I don't see him as a best 22 player or developing into one.

He looks so wooden and overweight.

Just realised we play Adelaide on a 6 day break they have 8.. On all of our recent three 6 day breaks the opposition has always had the maximum break possible.. [censored]

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
