The one thing I like about Maynard is that he has a mature body that will handle the in and under stuff better than others.  It seems like he also has the fitness to run out a game as well.

Is it a risk worth taking?  Possibly.  Time will tell.

Now is as good a time as any to take a punt. The injury huge list gives the selection committee some wiggle room when it comes to taking risks.

This is where Trengove can show he still has it if he gets a call up.

He has been totally committed to rehab and playing in the vfl working on his game and NOT been off drinking with some other players and after what he has been through who could blame him if he did.

He has the leadership skills which has been said on numerous occasions in the vfl reports and can play a midfield role with Oliver.

Get him in and we will finally know if he is back to AFL level or not after his long term injury.

We need to know before the end of the season.

Imo he can still play at afl level and I hope he gets and takes the opportunity to show it.

I think we need Jesse back this week so we have a mental shift in the group - a real feeling that the tide is turning back our way after the passed week. They'll want to die for the guy after all he's been through.

I think we need Jeffy back for a bit of spark too.

In terms of who steps up it has to be the third tier. ANB, Harmes, Stretch, Hannah and Wagner. If 3 of that 5 play well and contribute 20+ each then we can stay in games.

Can see Jeffy and Kennedy coming in playing rotating midfield and small forward roles (I seem to remember Jeffy going in some centre bounces last year?)

Hope a big step up.

Trenners to also take Tysons spot and hope he can re kindle his career

Goodwin and his Coaches.

Selecting the sides in the next 2-3 weeks is just so crucial for our whole year.

8 more games. 32 points left up for grabs

Lewis because he knows the chips are down. This is the period where he steps up and takes control to drive the group forward to maintain momentum. This is the crisis for which Lewis is the Man.

Harmes the other. Harmes has the necessary within him. He has another gear to go to. No more half arsed chases, no more glaring and gesticulating at team mates. He will lay a killer tackle that swings a game or hit a pack and blow it to smithereens. We may doubt some of this but I think Harmes can provide.

I'm hoping O Mac can continue to have career best games. We need to have flexibility between the fwd line and midfield which relies on the key pillars in the backline holding their own or winning the day.

He's looking more and more assured. This confidence comes from the patience of giving continued games to fringe players. (Stick with Wags as well Goody)

Petracca into the midfield to help cover the loss of our guns (VIney, Jones,  Tyson).

He will take the next step.

If Kent can't take his chances over the next 4-6 weeks he won't be at the football next year.

heres your chance to prove yourself Dean

Obviously Lewis. This is one of the main reasons we got him. Needs a big month of footy.

Would be very pleased to see Milkshake step up further.

If Kent and JKH cannot step up they'll be finishing their days at Casey or elsewhere. Waste of talent atm, the both of them.

I have been a Kenty fan for ages but...

He is very close to being traded. He has failed to get himself in shape 2 years straight now, lacks defensive pressure, obviously doesn't take his footy seriously if he is going to do something stupid like getting on the terps when he knew he shouldn't have been same goes for JKH and Spencer...BenKen I can forgive because he hasn't played this year (Although I think he should be in the squad this week)

Our squad is decimated with injuries, our faces are in the media for all the wrong reasons, we are staring down the barrell of a very grim 6 rounds with outs.

I am sorry guys but this season is just wreaking to me of a 9th place, I really want to be wrong but we are public enemy number 1 right now and the footy community is laughing at us and is stoked at our injuries list and suspension because of the way we have acting.

I have faith in Goody but jeezz it's going to be a hard one to get out of.

Pretty much every non tall player on our list was drafted as a mid once upon a time. Will be interesting to see who gets to go in there now we're 75% depleted in first choice centre square players.

Ben Kennedy fell out of favour pretty quickly, but I'm a fan. He goes hard and kicks goals. He's my pick.

My pick is Maynard, hope he gets a chance based on his attitude and ability soon.

My other pick is Trengove based on ability, and that i recollect it has been said that he would let Goodwin know when he believed he was right to go. I hope he is ready this week because we could do with the grunt......

Jayden hunt has had a quiet few weeks i think from memory. We need him back in defence, generating run and hitting targets.

As for mids. How about ANB having a big month? I know he probably never will reach dizzying heights, but it would be great for him to surprise and play like Tyson ie having some 30 pos games and being involved in our midfield flow.

Harmes as people have said would be an obvious great stand up player as theres something about him that is untamed and momentum generating. He plays taller and bashes and crashes. Hannan with some time in the middle could have an influence too. He plays more mature than most on the list.

Everyone needs to lift.
And gotta clean up our disposal which is just garbage.
Do that and we're half way there

Agree, the whole team need to step up.  The nine day break will help, as many people have stated we looked tired against the Swans!

Hopefully Hogan and Garlett come in and both help, with luck Watts also comes back in and our forward line is a lot better. Allows Petracca more time in the middle.

Then there are a few individuals that really need to lift:

Lewis - has just been going.

Vince - ditto (tag Murphy or Gibbs).

Wagner - lift & hit some targets (if still poor replace with Smith).

Outs - Viney, Tyson, Bugg, & White (just doesn't seem up to it) so leaves one spot or two if Watts doesn't make it.

JKH - in the middle, up to him if he steps up, he seems to have got plenty of stats in VFL over the last few weeks in this role.

Kent if no Watts - his best is good enough.

A win against the Blues would go a long way towards us making the finals.

Jordan Lewis to thrive as a pure mid alongside clarry, vince etc Hoping Trengove has a run too

Has Hibberd ever played mid? Has great skills and is super tough around the ball could also be a option

Well if the guys at casey cant show what they have now while we are seriously depleted, then they never will.

Kent, jkh, benken etc. I dont rate wagner at all and while white was pretty ordinary, deserves another chance.

Could very well be career defining for one or more of them.

Personally would live to see benken get a go. Has shown enough at casey and was more than serviceable in his senior games last year.

Lewis and Vince have to step up if we're any chance of winning games at the moment with all our injuries. This is why they are on the list. Time to stand up.

We can't expect Oliver and Trac to lead the midfield, and without Viney and Jones, all the other leaders have to really step it up.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
