wow what a great weekend. The bummers lose on the siren after being in a winning position, pies lose again, the kangas lose by 1 point and we have a great win. It would top off a great weekend if Carlton could knock off the tigers. That would help us out.

Freo knocking over the cats would be an even bigger help because their percentage would drop to below ours and we'd move up another spot on the ladder.

The umpires are back on the Bulldogs bandwagon:

"LET’S clear this up straight away — the Western Bulldogs aren’t back, they’re just extremely lucky...The premier got the four points against North Melbourne, but also got the rub of the green from the umpires in a drama-packed night under the lights."

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/teams/western-bulldogs/western-bulldogs-get-out-of-jail-with-onepoint-win-against-north-melbourne/news-story/696c77322f24a66e522c5f64e26c9c9b

Frees WB 26- North 13, at one stage 15:3.  Two of the WB frees directly cost North a goal and maybe a second.  Higgins was penalised for not starting run up for goal within the allowed 30 seconds (by the non-officiating umpire no less) - problem is there was no shot clock for him to look at.  Now, I loathe Higgins and North with a passion but fair is fair.

This time I wouldn't blame Scott for squealing about the umpire - his problem is he is now like the 'boy who cried wolf' - no-one listens.

When WB don't get the benefit of umpiring they struggle to play their run on game, very evident this year when free kicks have been more consistent as they had been in the last few weeks.

Lots of vested interests want WB to back up in the finals again.

Edit: insert not in 3rd para

So there was a shot clock countdown without a countdown clock?

Explain that one Simon Leth whatever your name is.

Another AFL Farce... imagine this hapening in September???

Well there shouldn't be a countdown clock in the first place.

But there should be a shot clock. Crazy that a player lining up wouldn't know how much time he has.

Now for the AFL icing on the cake. There is nothing in the rule book about the 30 seconds. Not a skerrick. Nothing about when it starts (when the players takes mark/get free kick? or when the umpire points out where the mark is? or something else?).

This is the worst season on record for umpiring, because the ump department has them working off a set of rules do not exist, except inside someone's head. (Even then they don't know whose head.)

For starters, they've got the best midfield in the comp. They're killing it in the AFL fantasy points!

And some bloke there takes a great grab every week, that's gotta count for something.

Anyone else quietly sending good vibes to all three underdogs today?

Fremantle beating Geelong puts us in the top 4 instead of the Cats.

Carlton beating Richmond puts the Tigers a full game and solid percentage behind us.

Gold Coast knocking off St Kilda puts the Saints that little bit further behind in the chase.

And to be clear, this is just for amusement and satisfaction. After the last three rounds of proverbial '8 point games' it is quite clear the Demons hold their destiny in their own hands and have a notion of what to do with it.

We are, after all, the form team of the competition! HA!

Oh, the irony!  Apparently, shot clock countdown was removed for the last 2 minutes of a game when:   "North Melbourne’s Mason Wood watched time expire until the final siren as his side held a one-point lead over St Kilda".  He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword!

Based on that I wouldn't like to see the shot clock come back for the last few minutes.  Yesterday, it could have cost us the game!

I agree. The whole 30 second rule is a joke. Purely bought in by the TV Broadcasters to speed the game up so the can play more commercials.

A Freo upset over Geelong will really throw the cat among the pidgeons.  They're ahead of us by a paltry .1%, so pretty much any margin will do it.  Big ask, though.  That'll put us 4th, behind Port and ahead of Geelong on percentage, a game and percentage behind Adelaide, and 2 games and percentage behind GWS - Port, Adelaide and GWS in the run home.  Exciting stuff.

Go the Dockers.

Selwood out for the game will certainly help the Dockers chances of a win, but they're poo and will probably hang around for a half before getting blown away but the downhill skiing Geelong side.

or, timekeepers stop clock at 30 secs, then restart on the kick. no time disadvantage to other side

This is one of those moments when someone's got to stand up when it counts. The umps will just have to find a way to win. They should look to last night for inspiration. Who will be their Jack Viney?

I know beggars can't be choosers, but can Freo win without any more goals from Ballantyne?  Yuck.

But the Broadcasters don't want the game to stop, sadly this is why we have all these crap innovations.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
